  • Art and boat festivals will fill the weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 2, 2018

HOT ENOUGH?--When it's 76 degrees by 10 a.m., here in West Valley, I know it's going to be a warm one. I am sure the heat lovers are rejoicing but I opted to hide in the basement this last Sunday, as I had gotten toasty enough just trying to get the morning water chores accomplished. However, as Monday morning showed up, we awoke to moisture. I could hardly believe it! While other areas were still sunny and dry, we got that marine layer in and it was quite wet, which certainly made my plants and lawn happy, so I'm not complaining. This sudden...

  • Some thoughts on the primary election

Well, the vote by mail ballots for the 2018 primary election are out, and some are already headed to the auditor's office to be ready for counting August 7, the official election day. With Washington's top two primary system, we have just a few races that will be decided in the primary. One of the more interesting races is that for US House of Representatives. Incumbent Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler faces challenges from four Democrats and two Republicans. Herrera Beutler is bound to advance to the general election, so who will advance with...

  • Is the war against fascism forgotten?

    Jul 26, 2018

To The Eagle: As I circle ever closer to my 75th birthday it is becoming more clear by the day that the war involving the civilized world against fascism seems to have been forgotten by many. Like some of you older folks, I had relatives that served honorably fighting in Europe, Africa and the South Pacific. What is troubling to those paying attention to what is happening is the apparent recurrence of a very similar set of circumstances that gave my generation the honorific title of War Babies. I would hate to think that your children or...

  • Wooden boat festival is next weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 26, 2018

PERFECT--The weather for Bald Eagle Day just couldn't have been more perfect. As this week begins, we've got some heat arriving but at least Sunday morning began with some heavy, moist cloud cover to help dampen things a bit before it got sunny and warm. With a dry, very hot week ahead, here's to keeping hydrated and limiting our time in the sun so nobody is having to be carted away due to heat stroke. BURN BAN--Don't forget, our county is now under a burn ban, which actually started July 15, so nobody should be lighting any fires anywhere, for...
