To The Eagle: The Free Summer Lunch Program is up and running! Our first week we served more than 90 meals. In addition to providing healthy food, the program has WSU Extension & 4-H leading Cooking Matters Food Demonstrations on Mondays. Those attending this week learned about Drinking Smart and left with their own personal water bottle and encouragement to refill and reuse for a cleaner environment. Walter Ray Berkshire, 83, passed away in Longview on July 18, 2018. He was a resident of Grays River the past 58 years. Walt was born in Eugene, Oregon on August 13, 1934, the son of George and Frances (Price) Berkshire. In 1961 he married Clara Magnuson in Eugene and they moved to Grays River where he resided since. A Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) asphalt grinding crew is scheduled to start work Monday to create left turn lanes on SR 4 in Cathlamet. WSDOT communications officer Tamara Greenwell said Wednesday that the crew will remove the rumble strips and pave them over at the intersections to receive the turn lanes. The highway will be partially closed, with traffic escorted by a pilot car. It has happened for many years: Nevada resident Willow Bill paddled a dugout canoe past Cathlamet last Friday. Bill provides education programs for youth and was part of the group that paddled dugouts to replicate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition a dozen years ago. The battle over the Town of Cathlamet's purchase of a vacant lot on Main Street isn't over yet. The town council voted 3-2 to buy the lot in quick action after an executive session at the June meeting. Following that meeting, a group of citizens angered by the vote collected over 100 signatures on a petition asking the council to rescind the decision. To The Eagle: I want to thank the Town Council for having the foresight to purchase the Butler lot. As far as I can see, it is the only vacant lot in the city center area and is both a reasonable and wise investment. The Bank of Pacific sold it for 90K in 1996. Someone bought it for 75K in 2007, and now is selling it to the City for 68K. What's the problem here? Is someone jealous that they didn't get a chance at it? It's a no brainer purchase for the city.
