  • Veteran is running for office of auditor

    May 31, 2018

To The Eagle: My Name is Matt Kuhl and I am running for Wahkiakum County Auditor. To your readers, I would like to share a bit about myself. Growing up in Cathlamet, I developed personal qualities only a small town can teach: selflessness, hard work, respect, caring for your neighbors, kindness, honesty, and much more. My whole life I have felt a need to help others. After graduating from Wahkiakum High School, I joined the US Army as a Cavalry Scout serving honorably for five years, deploying twice to Iraq and earning multiple Army...

  • Final car show will be Saturday at fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|May 31, 2018

WEEKEND WAS NICE--The traffic was a bit heavy on Friday, but it sure was a nice day to start out this past Memorial Day weekend. Saturday saw some more clouds move in, but no rain, so it was perfect for doing some yard work, and Sunday was gorgeous. By Monday, which was Memorial Day, we had some more clouds but still a wonderful day. Considering parts of Maryland got hammered with massive rains and flash flooding and tropical storm Alberto was causing some havoc down south, I'd say we've been quite fortunate. I can only hope our upcoming...

    May 31, 2018

Mary Ann Brusco Mabey died peacefully at home on May 27, 2018 after a long and valiant struggle with cancer. She was born September 16, 1946 in Longview, Washington to Roland Eugene Brusco and Cleo Jewell Pense Brusco. She lived her early childhood years in Rainier, Oregon. Her family then moved to Cathlamet, Washington as necessitated by the family tugboat business. Mary Ann loved the area and community there, and thrived. She graduated from Wahkiakum High School, where she was very involved...

  • Town council approves plan for sight distance

    Rick Nelson|May 24, 2018

Sight distance may soon be improved for motorists turning on to SR 4 from Cathlamet's Main Street. Town of Cathlamet officials agreed Monday to take steps to trim trees blocking vision to the west of the intersection. The trees, a tall fir and some shorter cherries, are on private property but extend over fences into the highway right-of-way. At recent meetings of both the town council and board of county commissioners, citizens have complained that the limited visibility makes it dicey to enter the intersection with traffic coming at 50 miles...

  • Town, county express broadband interest

    Rick Nelson|May 24, 2018

Local officials are coming together to study the feasibility of offering high speed, broadband internet service in Wahkiakum County. Gene Healy, a member of the board of commissioners of Wahkiakum PUD, presented the issue to his fellow commissioners at their meeting last week, asking, "Do we need a broadband action team?" This week, he raised the topic at meetings of the Cathlamet Town Council and Wahkiakum County board of commissioners, and members of both boards said they would join the team. "I want to see if there's any role for any of us...

  • Another candidate has filed for office

To The Eagle: My name is Stewart Feil, and I am running for Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney. I filed my declaration of candidacy on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Because of when I filed, my name was not printed in last week’s article so I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself to you and your readers. I currently work at Hanigan Law Office, P.S., where I serve as legal counsel for several businesses and municipal corporations, as well as municipal prosecutor for the City of Kelso. In the past I have served as a criminal defense att...

  • Unhappy motorist voices concerns

    May 24, 2018

To The Eagle: People need to be mindful and think of others in this small town. Placing road cones in the middle of the lane of travel on the Puget Island bridge at night or any time, is not a funny joke. It could ruin the underneath of a small car when hit. Or worse cause a collision when people try to avoid them. There is not enough room on the bridge for people to be playing games let alone stop and try to get a cone out from under their vehicle. If it is being done because people are displeased with the construction work, it is not the...

  • Farmers Market starts Friday at Elochoman Marina

    Diana Zimmerman|May 24, 2018

The Elochoman Marina Farmers Market will begin its season this Friday and continue throughout the summer on Fridays from 3-6 p.m. Last year when Rob and Diane Stockhouse decided to discontinue the market on their Island property, Wahkiakum County Port 1 was asked to take it over. After some consideration, commissioners agreed. “Lots of our regular local vendors that were at Stockhouses want to come back,” said Mackenzie Jones, administrative assistant at the port and the market manager. The far...

  • Mule golfer and baseball teams are champs

    Kay Chamberlain|May 24, 2018

NICE START--This week began with some nice weather and I think the sunny and breezy conditions are just great, as it's not too hot out there while we catch up on those yard chores. While my rhodies are all popping out, the grass popped up as well, so it was definitely time to crank up the lawn mower and get that weedeater going, as nothing grows faster with some earlier sprinkles and then some sunshine than the lawn and weeds! Here's hoping the holiday weekend brings us some sunshine as well. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May...

  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Sarai Burke|May 24, 2018

Greetings from the Community Center. Our Flex-Hosts, volunteers and I are looking for community input for the future of your Community Center. I have created a short and easy poll with possible ideas based on the comments from the CC suggestion box and from talking to community members. The Wahkiakum Community Center Coordinator position is a P/T position w/ funding only available to provide roughly 15 hours per week, each month. The CC had Cheryl Nelson try out the floor for tap dancing and it is good to go. Are there any tap dancers out...

  • Students practice science on the river

    Diana Zimmerman|May 17, 2018

During high tide last Friday, Wahkiakum High School students in Jeff Rooklidge's Environmental Science class headed down to the city dock in Cathlamet to collect plankton. Wahkiakum, along with four other schools along the Columbia River, Ilwaco High School, Washougal High School, Kelso High School, and iTech Preparatory High School in Vancouver, are participating in a research project organized by scientists at WSU Vancouver. The original hypothesis of the project, according to Rooklidge, was...

  • PIGYS needs help this year

    May 17, 2018

To The Eagle: PIGYS, the Puget Island Garage & Yard Sale, which takes place on June 22nd & 23rd, faces some major challenges this year. The Trump-inspired economic boom should bring us an abundance of customers, but that abundance is going to hit a choke point at our bridge construction traffic light. Traffic will be crossing the bridge in close-formation lumps, which would turn our usual pull-off for yard sale maps at the foot of the bridge into a hazardous enterprise. Our best bet will be to move the map distribution to the Cathlamet side...
