  • Use it or lose it

    May 17, 2018

To The Eagle: When we purchased the Video Store from Becky in 2009 it was suggested that this business, movie and game rentals and sales, was like a “buggy whip factory”; a business providing a soon to be obsolete product or service. Recently I have heard the term for our type of business as a “melting ice cube.” It may have taken longer than many have predicted, but the future of the Video Store is currently being questioned. Even though our product or service has lots of competition, every day I hear from regular patrons, and even the “on...

  • Howie announces re-election bid

    May 17, 2018

To The Eagle: I have had the great fortune to have served the people of Wahkiakum County as sheriff for nearly six years now. During this time I have seen the people of this office serve with honor, integrity, and respect. I hope that for the overwhelming majority of our citizens this has been the case in their interactions with the sheriff's office. I have filed for sheriff both with the state Public Disclosure Commission as well as with our Wahkiakum County Auditor's Office. I want to take this time to say I would find no greater honor than...

  • Great White Tail Run Saturday at JBH Refuge

    Kay Chamberlain|May 17, 2018

HALF OVER--Here we are, half past the middle of May so I guess you know, we should be experiencing a lot of May flowers due to April showers, and even May showers, so I hope you're enjoying the blooms and not commiserating with some of us, who really can't handle all this pollen! It's also a time where keeping our cars from being covered in that light to heavy, green haze is a real challenge! Have you been enjoying the sunshine? I hope all of the animals you own have been too, but sadly, just about every day there are multiple reports of animal...

  • New director brings enthusiasm to center

    Diana Zimmerman|May 17, 2018

Sarai Burke's enthusiasm is infectious, and it's bound to be a boon to the community center in Cathlamet, where she just became coordinator. Burke grew up here, and five years ago she returned to raise her own family. "It's where I want to be," she said. I have girlfriends who never left. And there are people like me who go away for awhile and come back. "I remember when this was a fire hall," she said of the community center. "This is the center of town, and for it to be the community center an...

  • KM exercise was more than a house fire

    Darrell Alexander|May 10, 2018

The fire fighter training exercise last Thursday night was more than just a control burn of a dilapidated old county owned house; it was a night of inspiration as more than 30 volunteer fire fighters converged on the KM to burn down this historical landmark. It may not be a landmark to most; however, it was of particular interest to many who were there. Grays river resident Dan Anderson was there to watch his son-in-law; Robert Maki and his grandson Kevin Maki work on the fire. Dan and his...

  • People coming together for summer lunches

    May 10, 2018

To the Eagle: I continue to be amazed and pleased with Cathlamet’s community organizations and volunteers. I went to the Summer Lunch Program meeting at the Community Center last Monday at 1 p.m. I was impressed with the history of the program the last few years and the planning for this year's program. The program is run entirely by donations and volunteers to ensure good nutrition for children and adults in the summer. Good nutrition is essential to our children’s development, learning, health and feeling good. Volunteers are needed for this...

  • Self taught artist finds many inspirations

    Diana Zimmerman|May 10, 2018

Ruth Doumit, a lifelong resident of Wahkiakum County is Tsuga Gallery's Artist of the Month for May. This Friday, there will be an open house to celebrate Mother's Day, meet Doumit, and see her work. Mother's Day is an appropriate day to celebrate Doumit. The obvious would be to say that she is the mother of three, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. But it would also be important to say that her life and her art acquired an urgency when 25 years ago, she found out she had cancer in a part...

  • Celebrate Mother's Day this Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|May 10, 2018

WEATHER--It was pretty nice at the beginning of last week, and then we cooled down a bit, with even a few showers falling here and there, but I was still able to get some flower bed work done, so I hope you got to enjoy the sunny times. This past weekend, we had a warmish Saturday but high clouds and sprinkles started in West Valley by late afternoon, so it wasn't as sunny and nice as some folks were experiencing. Sunday saw us taking turns between sunshine and clouds and quite a cool breeze, while just a few miles down the road, it was sunny...

  • Summer meal program needs input

    May 3, 2018

To The Eagle: Good nutrition is essential for effective learning every day, all year long. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition. Summer meal programs help children get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months. For the past two years Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church has taken the lead and served meals to kids and adults during the summer months. Initially they worked under the guidelines of the USDA Summer Food Service Program but found that it wasn’t a goo...

  • Group of volunteers starts beautification

  • Wahkiakum on the Move showing growth

Wahkiakum on the Move has grown from service three days a week with one bus and two drivers to six days a week with runs between Naselle and Kelso with four buses, three vans and 11 drivers. The service added new routes, including Saturday service, last October, and ridership is growing, program coordinator Camille Goldsmith reported to the board of county commissioners....

  • Museum opens Saturday 1-4 p.m., for the season

    Kay Chamberlain|May 3, 2018

WET START--As this week begins, it is taking turns being wet and being sunny. It's hard to do a lot of outside things with the "yo-yo" weather, but it beats the steady downpours we'd been having earlier this month. If forecasters are correct, we should be seeing a stretch of dry days this week, like last week, so here's hoping that nice weather prediction comes true. Last week we got up in the 80s, which is unbelievable for April, so we didn't have a lot of time to adjust from the 40's to the 80's and back down again! Unfortunately, on those...
