  • Now we have fake time: Daylight Savings time

    Jerry Bain|Mar 8, 2018

To The Eagle: Well folks, we're approaching the time of year when we begin Daylight Savings Time (DST), which is actually "Fake Time." That's right "Fake Time." No matter how we try to adjust the clock we cannot change the actual hours of daylight each day. Whether we realize it or not, the sun rises and sets at a certain time each day. We can change the clocks forward, backward, up or down and it will not change the hours of daylight. Yes I do not like "DST" and I am retired and can adjust my hours as I need; however, when I was working I had...

  • Commissioners cover sand, elk, construction and other issues

    Rick Nelson|Mar 1, 2018

Wahkiakum County commissioners covered issues ranging from sand to elk when they met on Tuesday. Puget Island resident Liz Beutler asked for a clarification on the status of easement for dredge spoils deposits on East Sunny Sands, one of the beaches where erosion is threatening structures. In a meeting last week with Congresswoman Jaime Herrera-Beutler, commissioners learned that a key holdout wasn't as ready to join the program as they had thought, and that could delay beach nourishment, she said. Public Works Director Chuck Beyer said he is...

  • Clarification and corrections

    Eagle staff|Mar 1, 2018

The $29,000 IRS penalty mentioned in last week's report on the Cathlamet Town Council meeting was actually for not sending in copies of employees W-2 forms to Social Security. Taxes were paid, employees just didn’t get credit for hours worked and wages for their future social security payments, according to Clerk/Treasurer Kerrie McNally. The incident occurred in 2011 under a different administration in Town Hall....

  • Mentally ill people are often gun violence victims

    Minette Smith|Mar 1, 2018

To The Eagle: A friendly reminder: People who have been diagnosed with mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence than to commit violence themselves. Please keep this in mind when using the topic of mental illness as a pivot from talking about sensible gun legislation. Also, institutionalization in a psychiatric facility (i.e., hospital, asylum) is not a good option. Not only does institutionalization violate rights, it is not helpful in treating mental illness. After discharge from a psychiatric institution, risk of suicide...

  • FOS vintage sale runs March 9 & 10

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 1, 2018

WEEKEND ENDS--We certainly had a couple of batches of heavy snow around West Valley this past week, but at least when I woke up Saturday morning, the sun was shining and temperatures were above freezing and that certainly was a huge improvement over the 19 degrees we'd had the day before that! I have to say, I was pretty happy to see temps in the forties and "just rain" on Sunday morning as that really helped turn things green once again, instead of solid white!! Of course, I did start to worry a bit when late that evening, we saw a snow begin...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners continued to talk about a proposal to revise their senior/disabled low income discount, listened to reports, and discussed a technological advance that could potentially help the community. Auditor Erin Wilson presented a proposal for the senior/disabled low income discount to the commissioners. The proposed program would provide discounts to the monthly basic charge. For instance, single people who qualify and make less than $12,060 would be...

  • Community gathers to talk tourism potential

    Diana Zimmerman|Feb 22, 2018

A group of curious and engaged residents showed up on Monday to listen to Nan Devlin, the tourism director for Tillamook County in Oregon, talk about the positive effect that tourism has had on her county and what it could do for Wahkiakum County. "In Tillamook County we have hundreds of jobs going begging because there aren't enough people to fill them," Devlin said. "Tourism jobs have a really interesting benefit. Only 15 percent of tourism jobs are minimum wage." Devlin said that tourism...

  • What is in a name?

    Feb 22, 2018

To The Eagle: I recently discovered that Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services has taken upon itself the opportunity to name the building donated to the county by the Congregational Church. The name they have decided on is claimed to be “The Hope Center.” It’s not that this is an inappropriate name; it’s just that the community at large was not given an opportunity to weigh in on the decision. I was hoping we could designate that facility something that would readily communicate to those of us who respect local history and have known t...

  • Former mayor prefers different plan for lagoons

    Feb 22, 2018

To The Eagle: Richard Erickson’s notion (Letters to the Editor, Feb. 15 edition) that the town should sell the old sewer lagoons to Port District 1 is both predictable and ironic. Yes, the waterfront should be used to promote economic growth in Wahkiakum County, though selling it to a loss-making port district lacking a long term vision would be a major mistake. Here’s why: In 2012 the town council very publicly proposed that the port take the lead in co-developing the sewer facility’s parcels based on a decade-old concept plan, a scheme once...

  • Town council cruises through light agenda

    Rick Nelson|Feb 22, 2018

Perhaps it was the snow that fell heavy and wet in the late afternoon, for the Cathlamet Town Council found itself with a light agenda Tuesday. The highlight of the agenda was supposed to have been a visit from Washington Department of Transportation engineers to talk about potential solutions for traffic control. However, the visitors called before the meeting and asked to be excused because of poor travel conditions in Clark County. The council quickly approved contracts with the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Columbia Wellness. The...

  • Winter not over, with low temperatures and snow

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 22, 2018

SNOW RETURNED--We woke up to a light layer of snow in West Valley this past Sunday morning, but places just a bit higher in elevation saw several inches of snow come down. KM had several inches and the Beaver Creek area saw a good amount too, which was ideal for sledding and snowboarding, so it just depended on where you were as to how much you got. We woke up Monday morning to temperatures in the low 20s, so yep, it was nippy. While we had become accustomed to a "mild winter," this just goes to show us that winter is not yet over and I've even...

  • Basketball, New Year set for this Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson|Feb 22, 2018

It looks like Mother Nature has decided to cooperate with the calendar and as I complete this column I watch big puffy snowflakes falling outside and actually sticking to the ground. My young dog, (almost 3 years old and 150 pounds) is rooting around in the snow trying to figure out what’s going on. Quite comical to watch. On the other hand, all the daffodils are about to bloom and we are now getting freezing temps. Go figure. News from Naselle: Sports for the upcoming week: The Naselle high school boys basketball team will compete on S...
