Cecelia Jean Cooper, 84, of Cathlamet, died February 16, 2018 at the Longview Hospice Center. She was born January 29, 1934 in Los Angeles, Calif., to Paul and Leota Brennan, the oldest of three children. Together we acknowledge and share our joy in the gift that her life was to us and her beloved friends, and the pain that her passing brings. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her main reason for life itself. She is a wonderful legacy and a shining example for all of us to follow. Survivors include her four children,...
To The Eagle: I reviewed the report on the town’s meeting regarding sewer rates. The council is deciding whether to charge customers a flat fee or charge on the amount of usage. We all know the fair way is to charge on usage. A single person on a fixed income in a two bedroom mobile home, who conserves their water to keep their bill down, should not pay the same as a family in a three bedroom home with three kids – where there is numerous loads of laundry, daily dishwashing, baths/showers, and watering of the lawn, etc. The town is faced with a...
The pictures of the new sign in Cathlamet were mistakenly attributed to Diana Zimmerman. It should have read "Courtesy photos."...
Responding to an article in last week's Eagle, a representative of the firm "doxo" contacted The Eagle to explain the company's business model. The article reported that some Town of Cathlamet utility customers had encountered doxo's website while searching for the town's website and used it to pay their bills online. The customers had been charged for the service and asked town staff about the fees. Clerk/Treasurer Kerrie McNally said staff hadn't heard of doxo, and the town had no arrangement with doxo for handling payments. According to the...

NICE--We started last weekend with some very chilly temperatures, below freezing on Saturday and Sunday morning, but the sunshine that followed was nice to see in place of the cloudy, often drizzly day we had on Friday, at least out our way! This work week has begun with temperatures in the freezing zone as well, 24 degrees at our house, so I guess that's the trade off we have going in order to get that sunshine! With temps only reaching up into the 40s, I'd say the "heating element" has gone out in the sun! ROAD WORK--By now you have probably...

A utility payment processing company has been taking payments for both the Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum PUD utilities without permission and charging a fee as well. "I have had two customers ask me why they have to pay $7 to pay their bills online," Cathlamet Clerk/Treasurer Kerrie McNally said Tuesday. "The town does not charge our customers for this." Both the town and PUD began taking payments over the internet within the past 18 months. McNally said that when a person does a search for the town, a search engine will show www.doxo.com as...
After many years of public service, former Mayor Dick Swart decided to retire from the town council at the end of 2017. On Monday, he talked to Eagle reporter Diana Zimmerman about how he got his start and how he's doing now. After college and two years in the Navy Reserves, Swart put his name into a management trainee pool in California. "That was something that was used by all the California departments to check out individuals who might have some potential for becoming leaders," Swart said....
To The Eagle: Have you noticed how much harder the more ardent Trumpsters and GOP Congress need to work these days to keep supporting their pro-Trump position? Whether Trump is thumbing his nose at our law enforcement and judicial system, or generally denigrating anyone that’s not a rich white man, or undermining our decades old relationships with key international allies, he’s increasingly harder to accept as trustworthy, and as an agent of positive change. I think his base and our “bobble head” GOP congress understand this. It’s probably...
WET BEGINNING--If fog and drizzle are your friends, then you really liked how this week began, as Sunday was a gloomy, foggy, drizzly kind of day, which was just right for those who needed an excuse to sit inside all day in their sweats and watch football. Then came Monday morning with more heavy, wet fog, but by noon, we actually had the skies clear up some; yeah! By the time you read this, we should have had a few drier days and warmer temperatures, so I hope this came true, as my feet are getting a bit "webbed" I think. Of course, with...

Thank you, dear benefactor: On a quiet Sunday morning, there was a little activity in front of the Wahkiakum County Courthouse. The aged and deteriorated sign that told a brief history of Cathlamet was taken down and replaced by a beautiful new one, donated by a local individual who, quite frankly, would prefer to remain anonymous.
