Wahkiakum Health and Human Services Director Sue Cameron retired last Friday after working in public health for 42 years. Cameron got her start at Portland State University with a class in environmental philosophy. "I was fascinated," she said. She was even more enthralled when she took a class in environmental health. Former Cathlamet resident Stanley Wayne Storer, of Corpus Christi, Texas died October 1, 2017 at his residence after a lengthy illness of liver and pancreatic cancer. The Charlotte House, a program of St. James Family Center, will host their 18th annual Chocolate Extravaganza at the Hotel Cathlamet on October 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. This annual fund raiser helps support their community sexual assault and domestic violence services and is sponsored by The Charlotte House Advisory Board. The John Thomas Middle School Chess Club will host an open chess tournament on November 4. There will be four rounds of play. Registration runs 10-10:45 a.m., and rounds are at 11 a.m. and 12:30, 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. Games are limited to 30 minutes per side. Wahkiakum County commissioners recognized the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and handled other business when they met Tuesday. Susan Schillios, director of the Charlotte House Domestic Violence Shelter, asked the board to approve a proclamation to observe the month. The Charlotte House has had a busy year, she said. An assembly was held in the middle school for grades 6-8 with a skit on what and how to recycle and then they demonstrated some robots. NOT TOO BAD--We had a couple of very warm days last week, as it was up in the mid-80s, which isn't too shabby for the end of September, but as of last weekend, it looked like we were back into a little more fall-like weather, with sun one minute and rain the next. William H (Bill) Wiester, 91, of Chehalis, WA., passed away at Centralia Providence Hospital September 21, 2017. He was born January 9, 1926 living in Morton. He was born a Boren, but was adopted at age 2 1/2 by Howard and Elma Wiester from Skamokawa. He was raised on the Wiester Sunrise Dairy Farm with his biological brother Bob. He was a Boy Scout.
