  • Music at the Grange Hall Saturday night

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 6, 2017

OFF AND ON--Last Friday was a gorgeous day and some folks were even enjoying a nice Saturday right from the start, but for those of us here in Skamokawa, it began as a cool, drippy, cloudy and well, not all that great of a beginning. Luckily, by late afternoon, the clouds parted and the sun peeked out, so that was enjoyable while it lasted, as the rains returned once again that evening. Sunday was off and on again too, so the "nice day" that forecasters predicted showed up in spurts, but it was dry enough in the afternoon to get the lawn mowed...

The theme of the 2017 World Health Day campaign is depression. Depression affects people of all ages, from all walks of life in all countries. A better understanding of what d...

  • High river forces derby cancellation

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 6, 2017

Last week, the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce cancelled their annual Hook the Hawg fishing derby, scheduled for Friday and Saturday due to conditions and the lack of interest. "The extreme weather has affected visibility in the river," Commerce Director Paige Lake said. "All the snow melt and continually drenching rain turned the river a muddy brown, and the fish can't see any of the flashing lures." And if the fish aren't biting, then out of town sport fishermen aren't either. According to Tim...

  • Unmake the Bully program comes to middle school

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 30, 2017

New York City filmmaker Mike Feurstein was back in town this week for his Don't Wait to Unmake a Bully program. He met with Wahkiakum High School students last year, and this year, he added John C. Thomas middle school students to his schedule. A mix of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Eric Hansen's classroom were having fun filming their sixth and final scene of what would be their own 90-second anti-bullying video on Friday. In the final scene, a girl is surprised to find out who...

  • Foreclosure sales seem bogus

    Mar 30, 2017

To The Eagle: How does the county approve a marijuana business in a motel that could not be used for its lack of water and septic system? How does that motel qualify as a business location when it magically disappeared from the market in a supposed foreclosure where nobody was given the opportunity to purchase it and for what price? This is but one of the many properties that supposedly were sold in foreclosure sale (auctions that never happened). I personally attended a couple of these auctions that never happened. Myself and others wasted...

  • Photography exhibit to open Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 30, 2017

SOGGY--As this week begins, it's a very soggy Sunday indeed. Saturday saw some breaks in the rain at least, but if you ask me, Sunday was just a good day to hunker down and stay put inside where it was nice and dry! The week looks to be fairly soggy until we possibly get a dry day on Friday, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that we can shed the rain gear and boots and soak in some sun rays as this third month of the year comes to an end; it's flying by! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 30-April 5 are Leif Carroll, Linda...

Freshman Tyler St. Onge shot 40 to finish 2nd in the 17 player field. Most of the Mules bested last weeks scores on what turned out to be a wet, sloppy day of golf. • Mules win one, lose two in recent games

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 30, 2017

For a team to grow, there must be challenges. Sometimes they come naturally, sometimes a team seeks them out. The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team sought out a challenge last Thursday, when they set up a game with King’s Way Christian in Vancouver. They lost 12-5, but they gained some valuable experience. “This game was to play against a quality program,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “The first pitcher we faced was a D1 commit to Washington State University. We pitched our young guys as we have so...

And despite the fact that Wahkiakum County is the second smallest county in the state, we have our own autonomous LHJ. LHJs are local government agencies, not satellite offices of the state Department of Health or the State Board of Health, and they are capable of tailoring their se...

    Rick Nelson|Mar 23, 2017

Wahkiakum County commissioners continued discussions about a dredging program and gave mixed approval to two notices of proposed medical/recreational marijuana retail stores when they met Tuesday. County commissioners also serve as the board of commissioners for four flood control zone districts, and they discussed with constituents the latest developments in their efforts to establish a 10-year dredging program that would place sand on eroding beaches. The US Army Corps of Engineers recently required the county to conduct an archeological surv...

Several years...

  • Spring sports are up and running

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 23, 2017

HALF AND HALF--Last Thursday was totally awesome, and that sunshine sure perked everybody up for awhile. It also meant it was time for me to get out there and get at those flower beds, which I truly felt the next day! Friday was a different story as it really rained at times. This past weekend we wound up having a wet beginning to things on Saturday, but then it got dry and very cold, as it was actually at freezing at my house, so I was so happy I hadn't purchased and planted any new plants just yet! Needless to say, we really enjoyed the...
