Cathlamet sculptor Bob Kizziar will exhibit a piece in the Oregon Pottery Association's "Keep Portland Wared" exhibition this weekend in Portland. The exhibition is part of the annual National Conference on Education for the Ceramic Art, which will draw 4-5,000 people from around the world to the Oregon Convention Center to view and learn about sculpture. Lilly Robbins Brock and her husband moved to Wahkiakum County about three years ago, so he could do some fishing. On Saturday, she made her first visit to the Cathlamet Library to talk about her work and read from her book and another one that will come out soon. The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team is off to a good start this season with two wins and a loss this week. Last Thursday the team was scheduled to travel, but the wet weather caused poor conditions in Morton, and a decision was made to move the game against Morton/White Pass to Cathlamet. Last week, students at J.A. Wendt Elementary selected books for the last time through the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) program. RIF, which started in 1968, has provided free books to students in hopes of encouraging literacy and a passion for reading. Federal funding for the program was cut in 2011. The Wahkiakum RIF program was part of the Cowlitz chapter, which is ending due to a lack of funding, according to Robin Westphall. Natthanon Sakworawich is from Bangkok, Thailand. He is 16, a sophomore, and one of three exchange students attending Wahkiakum High School this year. He goes by "Earth," a nickname his mother gave him when he was young. She was looking for a name that would complement his sister's nickname, "First," for first born.
