The young Mules shot 192 and upped their season intra conference record to 4-1 besting Adna 223 and losing to undefeated Life Christian Academy who shot a solid 174. Freshman Tyler St. Onge shot 40 to finish 2nd in the 17 player field. Most of the Mules bested last weeks scores on what turned out to be a wet, sloppy day of golf. Junior Bryce Good had a 10 on one horrible hole that elevated his score to 48 on what otherwise was a...
For a team to grow, there must be challenges. Sometimes they come naturally, sometimes a team seeks them out. The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team sought out a challenge last Thursday, when they set up a game with King’s Way Christian in Vancouver. They lost 12-5, but they gained some valuable experience. “This game was to play against a quality program,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “The first pitcher we faced was a D1 commit to Washington State University. We pitched our young guys as we have so...

Submitted by the Wahkiakum County Department of Health and Human Services Washington State has 31 county health departments, three multi-county health districts and two city-county health departments, all of which are referred to as Local Health Jurisdictions (LHJ). And despite the fact that Wahkiakum County is the second smallest county in the state, we have our own autonomous LHJ. LHJs are local government agencies, not satellite offices of the state Department of Health or the State Board of Health, and they are capable of tailoring their se...
Wahkiakum County commissioners continued discussions about a dredging program and gave mixed approval to two notices of proposed medical/recreational marijuana retail stores when they met Tuesday. County commissioners also serve as the board of commissioners for four flood control zone districts, and they discussed with constituents the latest developments in their efforts to establish a 10-year dredging program that would place sand on eroding beaches. The US Army Corps of Engineers recently required the county to conduct an archeological surv...

Several years...
HALF AND HALF--Last Thursday was totally awesome, and that sunshine sure perked everybody up for awhile. It also meant it was time for me to get out there and get at those flower beds, which I truly felt the next day! Friday was a different story as it really rained at times. This past weekend we wound up having a wet beginning to things on Saturday, but then it got dry and very cold, as it was actually at freezing at my house, so I was so happy I hadn't purchased and planted any new plants just yet! Needless to say, we really enjoyed the...

Lilly Robbins Brock and her husband moved to Wahkiakum County about three years ago, so he could do some fishing. On Saturday, she made her first visit to the Cathlamet Library to talk about her work and read from her book and another one that will come out soon. While her first book is about a WWII veteran and Longview resident Maury Hooper, who served in the Pacific, her next book will be about a veteran who served in Europe. "When I took this new project," Brock said, "I didn't realize he...

The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team is off to a good start this season with two wins and a loss this week. Last Thursday the team was scheduled to travel, but the wet weather caused poor conditions in Morton, and a decision was made to move the game against Morton/White Pass to Cathlamet. The Mules won 15-3. James Anderson pitched the first three innings and got the win. He struck out four and allowed four hits and two runs. Luke Brown finished the game, pitching two innings. He struck out six...

Sophomore Zach Johnston tied team captain Bryce Good, a junior, for second place with a 43 in...
Last week, students at J.A. Wendt Elementary selected books for the last time through the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) program. RIF, which started in 1968, has provided free books to students in hopes of encouraging literacy and a passion for reading. Federal funding for the program was cut in 2011. The Wahkiakum RIF program was part of the Cowlitz chapter, which is ending due to a lack of funding, according to Robin Westphall. Westphall, who is a member of the Wahkiakum School District school...
Natthanon Sakworawich is from Bangkok, Thailand. He is 16, a sophomore, and one of three exchange students attending Wahkiakum High School this year. He goes by "Earth," a nickname his mother gave him when he was young. She was looking for a name that would complement his sister's nickname, "First," for first born. According to the World Population Review there are 2.28 million people living in Bangkok, so Cathlamet must have been a shock to this young man's system. It's a little different that...

NASTY START--This past weekend began with a miserable start, as it rained and then blew some, and rained again. Luckily, we had a real nice break on Sunday, and it was terrific to see the sun shining, the river glistening, and out here in West Valley, we even had some eagles flying around. Unfortunately, the rains returned all too soon and were to last all week, so I can hardly wait for our next sunny day, or preferably, days! IN OUR THOUGHTS--Former resident, Brittney Robbins Haddix is living in New York now and it's been bitter cold in her...
