Last week, students at J.A. Wendt Elementary selected books for the last time through the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) program. RIF, which started in 1968, has provided free books to students in hopes of encouraging literacy and a passion for reading. Federal funding for the program was cut in 2011. The Wahkiakum RIF program was part of the Cowlitz chapter, which is ending due to a lack of funding, according to Robin Westphall. Westphall, who is a member of the Wahkiakum School District school...
Natthanon Sakworawich is from Bangkok, Thailand. He is 16, a sophomore, and one of three exchange students attending Wahkiakum High School this year. He goes by "Earth," a nickname his mother gave him when he was young. She was looking for a name that would complement his sister's nickname, "First," for first born. According to the World Population Review there are 2.28 million people living in Bangkok, so Cathlamet must have been a shock to this young man's system. It's a little different that...

NASTY START--This past weekend began with a miserable start, as it rained and then blew some, and rained again. Luckily, we had a real nice break on Sunday, and it was terrific to see the sun shining, the river glistening, and out here in West Valley, we even had some eagles flying around. Unfortunately, the rains returned all too soon and were to last all week, so I can hardly wait for our next sunny day, or preferably, days! IN OUR THOUGHTS--Former resident, Brittney Robbins Haddix is living in New York now and it's been bitter cold in her...

Reed's parents had one of those households that had a revolving door of people helping people. This revolving door of helpfulness was instrumental in producing one of the many puzzle pieces of Reeds life. Many of his life character traits and life events created the unique puzzle known as Reeds' life. Beginning with the support of his parents' generosity, the opportunity of growing up in small t...

There are three factors that make the Cathlamet St. Patrick's Day parade unique. First is that it is always held on the real St Patrick's Day, instead of some convenient nearby weekend. Second, it is a sidewalk parade rather than a street parade, and, third, there are usually many more Irish wolfhounds than in either Portland or Seattle's parade. This year the parade group will muster on Friday (tomorrow) at noon on the sidewalk across the street from Bank of the Pacific. The parade will amble...
The last time Travis Bain set foot on the floor at the State B Tournament at the Spokane Arena was as a Wahkiakum High School senior and Mule in the 2007 championship game against Northwest Christian. This past weekend, exactly 10 years later, was the first time he stepped on the floor as a referee. "It was the anniversary of our loss to Northwest Christian," Bain said, "and a little bittersweet and ironic to be back there." After graduating from high school in 2007, Bain attended Central...

To The Eagle: I am well familiar with snopes.com and Breitbart and, yes, I do see a pattern. I’m glad you (previous letter writer) see it too, though we see it in a different way. I typed in Hamtramck, MI, and you’re right; right away I see snopes.com website for it and you’re wondering how could “lazy people who are not fact-checking” miss it? In the first place, I’d never heard of the city. I was researching Sharia Law in many websites, and as you go into each website, you find words that are highlighted you can click on that would give...
To The Eagle: I am writing to comment on Bob Pyle’s letter of Feb. 9 concerning the failed efforts to enroll the county in the Timberland Library system. When I first started using the Cathlamet Library, I inquired as to why we were not on that system and received an answer citing a lack of funds or will, not the detailed explanation given by Mr. Pyle. Now that I know the approximate amount of money that currently would have to be spent by an individual or family either for a card at the Naselle Timberland or as part of property taxes, I w...
To The Eagle: I will be attending the Sewer Fairness meeting scheduled an hour prior to the March 20 Cathlamet Town Council meeting between 5-6 p.m. at the Cathlamet Fire Hall. I have already presented my concerns and requests to the Town Council although I used the Hotel Cathlamet as a focal point. Prior to the Sewer Fairness meeting I would like the opportunity to understand what other residents and businsses are thinking about the Cathlamet sewer/water rate situation. To that end, the Hotel Cathlamet will be hosting a coffee/cupcake...
Success is overtaking the Rivermile 38 Brewing Company in Cathlamet. Demand for the company's variety of beers and ales has surpassed the founders' expectations and production ability. “When is a business too good?" Richard Erickson, managing partner, asked this week. “There's no such thing as too much fun, but business is booming and we can’t keep up with demand. "So we have decided it would be best for the Brewery if we sold it to someone that has the energy and resources to continue growing the business. “Four years ago, we dreamed up a pl...
The proposed US House Republican health plan threatens Washington consumers, health and insurance officials say. House Republicans on Monday released their long-awaited plan for replacing former President Barack Obama's Affordable Health Care Act (ACA). It appears thousands of people in Southwest Washington could lose coverage or have coverage diminished, Dian Cooper, executive director of the Cowlitz Family Health Center, said Tuesday. The center operates clinics in Cathlamet, Longview, Ocean Park, Kelso, Castle Rock and Woodland. "That (the...
COLD SHOT--This past weekend we had another little cold spell, and yes, we did indeed see some snow falling but it didn't last too long down here. Beaver Creek had four new inches of snow by Sunday morning, so I was glad it was up there and not down here! However, I evidently gloated a little too soon, as we woke up to plenty of the white stuff on Monday morning down here in the lowlands, and it took turns between getting cold and coming down heavily and then warming up and doing nothing. There was widespread snow, from the coast and inland, so...

Three people were injured in a four-vehicle traffic accident Monday morning at the Abe Creek passing lanes east of Cathlamet. A second vehicle, a 1994 Honda Civic driven by Miguel P. Arteaga of Vancouver, was headed westbound and went out of control as it tried to pass an unknown...
