  • Chasing facts over internet is challenging

    Mar 9, 2017

To The Eagle: I am well familiar with snopes.com and Breitbart and, yes, I do see a pattern. I’m glad you (previous letter writer) see it too, though we see it in a different way. I typed in Hamtramck, MI, and you’re right; right away I see snopes.com website for it and you’re wondering how could “lazy people who are not fact-checking” miss it? In the first place, I’d never heard of the city. I was researching Sharia Law in many websites, and as you go into each website, you find words that are highlighted you can click on that would give...

  • Writer offers information about library services

    Mar 9, 2017

To The Eagle: I am writing to comment on Bob Pyle’s letter of Feb. 9 concerning the failed efforts to enroll the county in the Timberland Library system. When I first started using the Cathlamet Library, I inquired as to why we were not on that system and received an answer citing a lack of funds or will, not the detailed explanation given by Mr. Pyle. Now that I know the approximate amount of money that currently would have to be spent by an individual or family either for a card at the Naselle Timberland or as part of property taxes, I w...

    Mar 9, 2017

To The Eagle: I will be attending the Sewer Fairness meeting scheduled an hour prior to the March 20 Cathlamet Town Council meeting between 5-6 p.m. at the Cathlamet Fire Hall. I have already presented my concerns and requests to the Town Council although I used the Hotel Cathlamet as a focal point. Prior to the Sewer Fairness meeting I would like the opportunity to understand what other residents and businsses are thinking about the Cathlamet sewer/water rate situation. To that end, the Hotel Cathlamet will be hosting a coffee/cupcake...

  • Rivermile 38 Brewery is up for sale

    Eagle Staff|Mar 9, 2017

Success is overtaking the Rivermile 38 Brewing Company in Cathlamet. Demand for the company's variety of beers and ales has surpassed the founders' expectations and production ability. “When is a business too good?" Richard Erickson, managing partner, asked this week. “There's no such thing as too much fun, but business is booming and we can’t keep up with demand. "So we have decided it would be best for the Brewery if we sold it to someone that has the energy and resources to continue growing the business. “Four years ago, we dreamed up a pl...

  • Comments: Republican health plan threatens Washington consumers

    Mar 9, 2017

The proposed US House Republican health plan threatens Washington consumers, health and insurance officials say. House Republicans on Monday released their long-awaited plan for replacing former President Barack Obama's Affordable Health Care Act (ACA). It appears thousands of people in Southwest Washington could lose coverage or have coverage diminished, Dian Cooper, executive director of the Cowlitz Family Health Center, said Tuesday. The center operates clinics in Cathlamet, Longview, Ocean Park, Kelso, Castle Rock and Woodland. "That (the...

  • Lots of events set for this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 9, 2017

COLD SHOT--This past weekend we had another little cold spell, and yes, we did indeed see some snow falling but it didn't last too long down here. Beaver Creek had four new inches of snow by Sunday morning, so I was glad it was up there and not down here! However, I evidently gloated a little too soon, as we woke up to plenty of the white stuff on Monday morning down here in the lowlands, and it took turns between getting cold and coming down heavily and then warming up and doing nothing. There was widespread snow, from the coast and inland, so...

  • Citizens constructing gillnetter memorial

    Diana Zimmerman|Mar 2, 2017

A memorial to honor local fishermen is in the works. Bud Lindwall was the catalyst for the project. When he passed away in January, it was suggested to Stephanie Olsen, who runs the local funeral home, that it might be better to recognize him on a memorial for commercial fishermen than to honor him with a memorial service. Olsen, who has lived in this community since the 1970s, was pleased to facilitate the matter. She just wants to make it very clear that she can't run it through the funeral ho...

  • Lady Mules on great winning streak

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 2, 2017

MIXED BAG--As February came to an end, we've had some sun, some rain, some hail, some snow and some very cold temperatures, so we've had it all it seems! The snow we got last Thursday was a little more than many of us expected, but thankfully, it had stopped and was mostly gone by that night or next day. The nippy temperatures of Saturday morning made for icy puddles and slick conditions but the sun that was shining was certainly a welcome sight. That snow that fell in the very early hours of Sunday morning, which left us back in our winter won...

Bill Loftus, University of Idaho, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences|Mar 2, 2017

Some of the best advice that University of Idaho animal science professor and researcher Matt Doumit ever received about teaching came from an uncle who was a professor at Fresno State University. “Before I started graduate school, my uncle Marvin suggested that if I had the opportunity to teach, I needed to make a point of getting to know my students,” Doumit said. “That simple advice has been the cornerstone of my interaction with over 3,400 students in my classes. By taking a genuine interest in students, an instructor can build a rappo...
