Lifelong Wahkiakum County resident, Robert A. 'Bob' Hendrickson, 88, of Cathlamet passed away on July 30, 2018. Bob was born at the family home on Puget Island on August 10, 1929 to Swedish immigrants Albin and Elin (Olsson) Hendrickson. Bob grew up on the Puget Island family farm and later graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1947. Walter "Wally" David Wright, 71, of Cathlamet, passed away peacefully Monday, August 6th at the Frontier Nursing Home in Longview. Wally was born April 30, 1947, in Longview, to Arthur and Effie (Faubion) Wright. He lived in Cathlamet most of his life, graduating from Wahkiakum High School, Lower Columbia College, and Western Washington University. The fourth annual Wahkiakum Warriors & Widows Salmon Derby will be held Aug 29 and 30 with a welcome salmon dinner at the Elochoman Marina. Organizers want to provide a unique Northwest experience for the Warriors & Widows from the Warrior Transition Battalion at Madigan Army Medical Center Joint Base Lewis McCord. The Wahkiakum Mule Cheerleaders are hosting a Mini Mule Cheer Camp for students entering K--8th grade. The camp will be August 28-31 for grades K-3, 4:30-5:30 p.m., and grades 4th-8th 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Wahkiakum High School track. Parents will have to provide transportation as that is the week before school starts. By all accounts, the combined Art Festival/Wooden Boat Show was a success this weekend. As for the Wooden Boat Show, organizer Julius Dalzell said numbers were down but enthusiasm expressed by visitors more than made up for it. The Town of Cathlamet held a special meeting last Wednesday to discuss whether or not to allow parking on a lot they recently purchased despite vehement public objection. When students return to school this fall in Cathlamet, they'll have mental health services available if they need them. The Wahkiakum County mental health department has been able to supply a therapist to serve Wendt Elementary, Thomas Middle and Wahkiakum High schools.
