OFF & ON HOLIDAY--Our Fourth of July holiday started out pretty nice for the first couple of days, but we woke up to rain here in West Valley on both Sunday and Monday. If you happen to be one of these people who are experiencing low water levels in your creek or well, I'm guessing you were pretty happy to see some rain fall, but that little bit probably won't do you much good, but it does take down the fire danger a bit, and with massive fires in some areas, the rain is a good thing. Local officials met Tuesday with representatives of the National Park Service to plan the design process for a waterfront park in Cathlamet. The group is working on a plan for converting the town's old sewer lagoons into a park adjacent to the Elochoman Slough Marina. The town has received a grant from the park service for the work. Starting July 5, any child 18 and under will be able to enjoy a free lunch in the multi-purpose room at J.A. Wendt Elementary School in Cathlamet. The summer food program will be available on Mondays through Thursdays until August 17. Lunch will be served from 12-12:30 p.m., but the Multi-purpose Room will remain open until 1 p.m. to allow the youth time to finish their meals. The Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Swimming Pool is the place to be, if you ask Duncan Cruickshank, the pool manager and public works superintendent for the Town of Cathlamet. There will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament this year, a new offering that is the brainchild of head lifeguard Shane Souvenir. Cathlamet's town council approved a call for bids for expansion of the water plant intakes and acted on other business at their monthly meeting on Monday. The goal of the water project is to locate an unused line under the Elochoman River which would increase the water plant capacity. The state Department of Health is threatening to restrict the number of new connections to the town and Puget Island water systems unless the town expands water intake capacity. Michael Aaron Rose, 69, of Cathlamet, died May 25, 2016 in Nevada. He was born in Cathlamet, September 6, 1946 to George and Myrtle Rose. Mike was a logger in the Cathlamet area for 27 years before moving to Winnemucca, Nev., where he drove a haul pack truck. He eventually retired and moved back to Cathlamet.
