  • Port 1 acquires Yacht club's dredge

    Last Wednesday a barge arrived in the Cathlamet Channel with Wahkiakum County Port District 1's new dredge aboard as well as a crane big enough to lift the 35,000 pound vessel. After a couple hours and a lot of working and waiting in intermittent rain, the dredge was off the barge and being pulled up the river and into the marina.     The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Crab & Oyster Feed at the Norse Hall on February 20. This will be the 31st year for this event. The Crab & Oyster Feed is a fundraising event for the Chamber. Funds raised at this dinner help to support Bald Eagle Days and the fireworks show that coincides in mid-July.     Ronald James Bigelow, 80, of Cathlamet, died January 5, 2016 at the Hospice Care Center. He was born in Long Beach, Calif., to Vernon and Katherine (Welton) Bigelow. He served in the Air Force for 22 years, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a test flight mechanic for Boeing in Seattle until retiring in 1992.     Lind “Mack” Gilbertsen, 73 of Ocean Park, died January 20, 2016 at his son’s home in Cathlamet. Mack was born in Cathlamet on January 10, 1943 to Harold and LaVerle (McDonald) Gilbertsen. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1962 and spent his work life driving truck for Crown Zellerbach, DeBriae Logging and some years owning his own truck.     We had 14 students representing Wahkiakum, and over 20 adults all in Olympia last Saturday for the FIRST Lego League Robotics Semi-Final tournament featuring teams from Vancouver, Olympia, Tacoma and Renton.
