Ralph Rodahl died June 1, 1997. Planners had so underestimated the man and his impact on the community that they held the service in a crowded space at Dowling Funeral Home. Outside in the warm sun that day, many waited to honor him and express their condolences to his family, wife Juanita, and children Randy and Kim. Rodahl was a generous and kind man and it was his vision that gave this small town a golf course. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1939, and two of his track and field...

Jim Roberts and his wife, Sally, haven’t lived in Wahkiakum County all that long, but they love the place and particularly the local music so much that Jim promotes it on the radio. Roberts is almost 71 and a self-professed independent cuss. He grew up in Clark County, graduated from high school and joined the Marine Corps that same year, but was out before Vietnam. “I just rattled around for a while,” Roberts said. “I kind of dropped out. I had a lot of odd jobs and some were odder than others....

GETTING BETTER--Our weekend saw us getting pretty soaked from time to time but during the afternoon hours, we had some pretty decent dry spells, so it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The same goes for the work week as we had off and on showers as it began, but we also had some dry spells, so it's our usual Spring time weather, in which we find the shower/sun combo making our lawns grow like crazy so the person in charge of mowing your lawn is definitely keeping busy. By the time you read this, we're supposed to be a little...

Ray Prestegard is a busy man. He’s devoted most of his life to music, and he’s found more than one way to interact with it. Along with performing, he decided to give radio broadcasting a try at KMUN, Coast Community Radio out of Astoria. “I’m an entertainer and a musician, so I’ve always broadcasted,” Prestegard said. “I listened to that old radio station for 20 to 30 years and I just decided to bite the bullet. I wanted to do it for decades.” The Elochoman Valley resident found himself doing a...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council discussed biosolids, salmon rearing issues, and awarded a Propane supply bid and acted on other issues at their monthly meeting on Monday. The council voted 5-0 to file a friend of the court brief in the Department of Ecology's suit with Wahkiakum County over regulation of the application of biosolids. Biosolids are the product created from treating human sewage. Two years ago, the county passed an ordinance banning the application of all but Class A biosolids, and the state sued, saying it has the...

Last week, on Friday I believe, there was a top story on KATU news about a boy who was hit by a drunk driver after saving his friend. Kameron Howell-Meeker was walking down River Rd. in Milwaukie, Ore., when he heard some screeching and saw that a pick-up truck was swerving and heading directly for him and the girl (Ellie) he was walking with. He pushed Ellie out of the way, then was hit, thrown high in the air, did about three cart wheels and landed in a bloody mess on his face. He was rushed to OHSU Trauma Center, and that’s when I, his grand...
GORGEOUS--If you've been wanting to do yardwork and garden work and you've been stopped by the pouring rains we had last week, you certainly have had no excuses this week, as it's been beautiful out there. A little light breeze was blowing on Monday morning and along with that wonderful sunshine, I thought the temperatures were just right. With tornadoes in the midwest, snowstorms in Colorado and fires raging in the drought-stricken state of Texas, I almost feel guilty for enjoying this wonderful weather that we are currently experiencing....

The Cathlamet VFW Post had contemplated the idea of installing a memorial at Greenwood Cemetery for years but never had the funds to turn the dream into reality. It was the recent loss of a fellow veteran, Gary Huber that spurred members into action this year. “Gary had been talking about the memorial again,” VFW Commander Danny Eaton said, “so we formed a committee.” The memorial is dedicated to all the local men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. The large black basalt stone was do...
Officials from Wahkiakum County and the Town of Cathlamet on Tuesday started a two-year task of upgrading their shoreline management plans. Stemming from a 1971 voter approved initiative, the plans are intended to guide human activity on shorelines while preserving the environment and maintaining public access to shorelines. The town and county passed their first shoreline plans in 1975 and last updated them in 1992. The state Department of Ecology has awarded the town and county a $250,000 grant to cover the cost of the upgrade. The grant expi...
Commissioners of Port 1 talked dredging, beavers, moorage and off season rates at last Thursday’s meeting. Josh Adams, who had requested permanent moorage space for the F/V Harmony at an earlier meeting, wondered if he could stay or look elsewhere. “What it comes down to is the waiting list,” Commissioner Bob Kizziar said. “You’d have to get your name on the waiting list and when your name came up we’d put you in.” A $25 dollar fee is required to stay on the waiting list for a permanent sli...

OFF AND ON--As this work week begins, it's been an off and on day for rain and sunshine, as it depends on where you were and at what time of the day you were there as to whether or not you were steaming in your car or pulling the hood up on your coat to keep from getting wet. This past weekend saw torrential downpours which made travelling quite dangerous and made staying home a real big relief. We may be drying out a bit they say and I'm sure we'd all enjoy that as this rain/sunshine mix has made the grass grow so fast that it's hard to keep...
