Students from 12 southwest Washington school bands filled Wahkiakum High School’s gym Tuesday for a rehearsal for a Mass Band concert Tuesday evening. An honor band of outstanding musicians also performed in the evening, and during the day, bands from the 12 schools competed in judged performances. The Cathlamet Town Council filled a vacancy, approved timber harvest plans and rejected a bid for a Propane supply during a special meeting Tuesday. The council appointed former Council Member Bill Talbott to fill the vacant position held by Dick Swart, who resigned at the beginning of the month. Majors Division team Moore Auto and Major/Minor Division team Luce Excavation both won their games against Longview teams. Wayne Edward Helms, 65 of Skamokawa was killed in a traffic accident March 7, 2014, in Yuma, Ariz., after his motorcycle was rear-ended by a car. Wayne was born Nov. 20, 1948, in Vancouver, to Dock F. and Mary D. (Moore) Helms. He grew up in Longview and attended Mark Morris High School. John Richard Lindsey, 63, of Skamokawa died April 23, 2014. He moved to the area with his family in the sixties. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1970. He was a dairy farmer until 1998 when he retired. He married Elaine King in 1976. She survives him at home. He was preceded in death by his son J.R.
