  • Undersheriff supports current leadership

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: I have written and rewritten letters to the editor towards the issue of the current campaign and have torn them up without sending. I came to the sheriff's office at the start of this year from King County. My reason in doing this had nothing to do with pay, I took a huge pay cut to make this happen. I saw a community that was really hurting and I wanted to help. If the voters don't choose to re-elect Howie then I will be retiring. I have no regrets about making the move. I have grown to deeply love this community and the people...

  • Sheriff Mark Howie is a proven leader

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: I grew up in Cowlitz County, not Wahkiakum. Like many others, I left home to pursue an education and a successful career. Later in life, my husband and I were able to return to our roots. After living in Portland, Wahkiakum County seemed like "Mayberry" (the l960's era Andy Griffith show) where the sheriff solves problems by drinking coffee with the folks and riding around in the car with the "bubble light" on top. I wish it were so but we're several decades past that type of law enforcement. We'd be naive or stupid to think we do...

  • Cowlitz County Sheriff endorses Mark Howie

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: Over the past couple of years it has been my pleasure to get to know your sheriff, Mark Howie. As the sheriff of Cowlitz County, I had several discussions with the late Jon Dearmore regarding whom he intended to appoint as his undersheriff. For a variety of reasons, he decided to bring in someone from an agency outside of the area, but who was a man who was making a home in Cathlamet. He was a man Jon trusted, a friend; he was Mark Howie. On that black day last October when Jon chose to move on from this world, I had the opportuni...

  • Mark Howie will do a good job

    Sep 11, 2013

To The Eagle: We feel that Mark Howie has done a good job as Wahkiakum County Sheriff. He stepped into the position under adverse circumstances. He has earned his place in the community and shown to the public that he is dedicated to the well-being of our county. We would like to see him continue as our sheriff. Ray and Ora Loraine Bauer, Cathlamet...

  • Howie has made his home here

    Sep 11, 2013

To The Eagle: My name is Lynda Gerlach, 25 year resident of Cathlamet, parent of WHS graduates and newly retired from the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. We have two fine men running for the position of Wahkiakum County Sheriff, both whom I have known for quite some time. It is my belief that Sheriff Mark Howie has shown that he possesses the experience, education and leadership qualities to continue as Sheriff of Wahkiakum County. He exhibited these qualities first as a local business and property owner, then as Sheriff. Working with him many...

  • Blind Luck Combo offers an acoustic buffet

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 11, 2013

Three local musicians have teamed up to record and perform an eclectic mix of music featuring voice, ukulele, cello and violin under the band name of Blind Luck Combo. They are Skamokawa valley residents Sunrise Fletcher and Andrew Emlen, and not technically local but seemingly so because of his long association with Emlen and the lower Columbia region, Jeffrey Reynolds. Bandleader and frontman Fletcher executes the vocals and plays melodies and harmonies on a ukulele. Emlen provides the foundation with his cello, and Reynolds's masterful violi...

  • Emergency preparedness important to county residents

    Sep 11, 2013

To The Eagle: As a former emergency manager, I know the importance of having clear information about the kinds of disasters that can happen and the needs of the community being served. When working with Wahkiakum County to prepare for a public health emergency, I know that we did not have up-to-date information about the needs of all our neighborhoods and all of our community members. That is why I am writing to encourage everyone to complete the Community Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Survey. The Emergency Management Program in the count...

  • County discusses public health issues

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 4, 2013

A crowd filed under the tent top to taste chili and to flee the heat of the sun. There were a couple vendors there to take advantage of the festive mood, and Drop Anchor Brewery provided beverages. • Wahkiakum County has become couple's home

    Deb Howie|Sep 4, 2013

To The Eagle: Some people call us outsiders. Mark and I came to Wahkiakum eight years ago when we bought a small cottage. My mother in law lives here and we made this our second home. Whenever we drove into Cathlamet, I knew we would live the rest of our days here. We came from a city with high crime, gangs, drugs, and prostitution. After a weekend ended, and we had to go back to Seatac, we hated leaving. The only thing calling us back was Mark's job and family--our two daughters, grandsons, my mom, dad, and aunt. When Jon Dearmore called Mark...
