Wallace A. “Wally” Kaste went home to be with the Lord on August 21, 2013. Wally was born in the family’s Jahns Valley farmhouse in Alma, Wisc., on March 16, 1930 to Alfred and Elizabeth (Gobar) Kaste. Wally’s mother Elizabeth instilled in him a lifelong love of cows and people. She died when Wally was 13. In 1948 Wally graduated from Alma High School and joined the Army during the Korean War. Longtime Cathlamet resident Lois Arlene Sullivan died on July 13 at the hospice care facility in Longview. Lois was born on June 7, 1929 in Red Bluff, Calif. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Portland in 1947 and married her late husband Jack in 1965. Lois worked for Western Electric, a division of AT&T, in Portland and retired after 25 years there. She was an active member of the Cathlamet community. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife last week released a determination of non-significance under the State Environmental Policy Act that says development of a new commercial fishing area along the lower Columbia River's north shore at Cathlamet will likely not have a significant adverse impact on the environment. The 5th Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral Skateboard Festival has come and gone with its crowds, skinned knees and elbows, traffic disruptions and displays of athletic skill. Organizers, led by PDX Downhill company in Portland, put on a 2 1/2 day festival that drew hundreds of competitors and spectators for the eight events that covered almost every aspect of the sport. Colorado resident Robert McKendry III, the announcer for the Cathlamet Downhill Corral, has repeated himself the past two years: The event has made Cathlamet a destination in the skateboard world, he has told the crowd. GOOD AND BAD--There is an old saying around here, that if you want to plan something outdoors, don't do it at fair time, as the odds are, it will rain! Sure enough, after about a month of dry weather, it rained pretty good last Thursday on the opening day of the fair, which was really too bad. The American Red Cross Blood Services is urging blood donors to donate blood or platelets to strengthen blood inventories in order to be prepared to meet any additional blood needs over the final holiday weekend of the summer. Ryna M. Stornetta, 90, formerly of Cathlamet, died August 10, 2013 in Petaluma, Calif. She was raised in California and worked as a cashier at a casino in Lake Tahoe for 24 years, retiring in 1988, when she came to Cathlamet. Ryna spent her retirement between Cathlamet, Arizona and California. While living in Cathlamet she attended St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Noreen Gayle Holten, 78, of Cathlamet, died at her home on August 9, 2013. She was born on July 29, 1935 in Tacoma to John and Nell (Evans) Smythe. She was raised in Chehalis where she graduated from high school in 1952. She attended Centralia Junior College and in 1954 she married Bud Holten.
