Cathlamet resident Dan Cary, center, recently received an Auxiliary Commandant Letter of Commendation Award from the commandant of the 13th Coast Guard District. The award recognizes Cary as a volunteer who has served the past year as a fishing vessel dockside examiner and who has qualified as a marine safety drill conductor. A noisy delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange Hall last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner is the Fair Board’s biggest fundraising event each year. A hard working group of volunteers planned and staffed this big event and did a fantastic job! Cowlitz County business owner Paul Gragg and his wife, Jalna, are in negotiations to purchase the Columbia View Care Center facility in Cathlamet. The nursing home closed last year, and the owner of the facility, Aviv REIT Inc., put it up for auction in January. Gragg surfaced as the leading bidder. On December 13th, 2012, Nils Theodore Newbom finished his great hunt. Born in 1941, he was the son of Ted and Helen Newbom (Cruikshank).
