Wahkiakum County's political season got into full swing this week with the arrival of primary election ballots in the mail on Saturday and candidate forums Monday in Cathlamet and Tuesday in Grays River. Two write-in candidates have also made an appearance. Longview computer store owner Tim Sutinen announced a third try for election to the legislature; he is running as a write-in for District 19, Position 2; incumbent Brian Blake is seeking re-election to that position. On Tuesday, Puget Island resident Dennis Gordon sent The Eagle a letter to...
To The Eagle: I could not believe the hateful letter in last week's Eagle about homosexuality. If we were to take everything the Bible says literally then according to Exodus 21:7 "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as male slaves do." I didn't know we could sell our daughters; if I tried to sell my daughter I am sure she would object quite strenuously. Leviticus 25:44 states that "Slaves, male and female, you may indeed possess, provided that you buy them from among neighboring nations." Owning slaves is against th...
To The Eagle: The letter from last week’s editorial really burdened my soul. The writer stated that Cathlamet was “doing something immoral and disgusting by allowing the PFLAG (gay/lesbian) group to participate in the Bald Eagle Day parade, spreading gay and lesbian filth.” He asked, “When are Christians going to take a stand for the truth?” First of all, I am willing to take a stand and state that I am a Christian. What that means to me is that I believe in Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, having died and was raised fr...
To The Eagle: I am motivated as I write this letter to our community paper. Wahkiakum county residents and friends nearby are always remarkable at showing others what being generous really looks like. In the many years that I have lived here, I have seen many charitable fund raisers. Every time, I am awe struck at how compassionate a town can be. People are willing to give prayers, food, money, and much more when someone is in need. I know it should not be taken for granted either. Here we go again... This is my challenge for you: Please come...
To The Eagle: A letter was published last week calling on Christians to take a stand for truth. As a leader of a church in our community, I take great caution in approaching this subject, yet I feel it is necessary to communicate that Christians are not called to publicly chastise and humiliate those we are expressing truth to. It is widely recognized among people who believe the Bible to be true in all areas that God did not intend for a homosexual relationship. They also recognize the Bible takes a stand against pride, adultery, hatred, murde...

To The Eagle: I am writing this in answer to Len Lindsley's letter of July 19, 2012. Another Bald Eagle parade has come and gone and I believe it was a fun celebration and a good time in Cathlamet! Even better, it was a beautiful day. As a side-line to the season, it seems that we can also expect a yearly disapproving and hateful letter from Mr. Lindsley about the fact that gays and lesbians would be walking in the parade. This is America, and it is a democracy. This is at least the second time he has called for blocking these people from the p...

For a while, Cathlamet's town council meeting Monday was bad news followed by more bad news regarding the town's construction projects. First, consulting engineer Ken Alexander of Gray and Osborne, LLC, reported that the contractor installing wastewater conveyance lines under SR 4 had encountered bedrock that has stopped the boring. The contractor tried boring at a more shallow level, he said, but still bedrock blocked the passage. The problem doesn't stop the project, but the engineers are working out how to solve the problem and what the...
Tammy Peterson For Tammy Peterson, the position of Wahkiakum County Treasurer has always been a goal. “It just feels like a natural progression,” said Peterson who has logged more than 20 years of work in county government. Tammy moved to Cathlamet from Port Angeles when she was just five years old. A 1977 graduate of Wahkiakum High School, she attended Longview Business College before going to work for Wahkiakum County. “I am invested in this community. I’m not going anywhere,” said Peterson who is the chairman of the Wahkiakum Community Netwo...
Wahkiakum PUD managers and commissioners are exploring a possible billing and meter reading contract with the town. Recently, Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz sent a letter to each PUD commissioner expressing an interest in contracting water meter reading and water/sewer billing and account collections to the PUD, explained PUD Commission Chair Gene Healy. Healy stated that his preliminary evaluation suggested that savings may be gained by ratepayers from both entities. PUD Auditor Wilson said the town’s utility department reads a...

The Eagle invites readers to submit questions to pose to local candidates at the forum we're sponsoring next Monday in Cathlamet. This forum will focus on local races--county commissioner and treasurer and Wahkiakum PUD commissioner. All local candidates are invited to speak, whether or not their race will be on the primary ballot. Candidates will have an opportunity to make a statement, and they'll answer written questions submitted by the public. Questions should be directed at all candidates for a particular office, not an individual...
“I loved my time at Wahkiakum,” John Hannah said recently. “I have great friends and family here. Cathlamet will always be home.” Hannah began working for Wahkiakum School District in 1998, as a substitute teacher while working on his Masters Degree in Teaching. In the fall of 2001, he started teaching sixth grade full-time. He later moved into the middle school and most recently taught high school math. He has also coached wrestling and football. In June, Hannah packed up his classroom at Wa-Ki-Hi and headed east to begin his new career...
Mike Backman Commercial fisherman Mike Backman feels he would bring good business experience and a strong work ethic to the board of county commissioners. “First, I’ve been active in the community for a long time, and this is an opportunity to take my commitment to the next level,” he said when asked why he is running for the office. “Secondly, it’s a job, and I think I can do a good job at it.” Backman graduated from Wahkiakum High School and studied at LCC but didn’t complete a degree. He is a third generation commercial fisherman on...
Robert Belleisle, 72, retired to Cathlamet with a love of the outdoors. The Coos Bay native would spend his free time hunting and fishing so after 20 years of work for Columbia Ford in Longview, Belleisle purchased a pole building and hauled his boat to Wahkiakum County. “Seven years ago, Robert had a heart attack,” recalled Ken Belleisle, Robert’s brother and power-of-attorney. Thirty days after his heart attack, Robert suffered a stroke while working outside in his garden. “He’s paralyzed on his right side. He can cuss and he can say my name...

To The Eagle: When are Christians going to take a stand for the truth? Our town of Cathlamet is doing something immoral and disgusting by allowing the PFLAG group to participate in the Bald Eagle Day parade. They are a group dedicated to spreading gay and lesbian filth. It is time to make a stand and not participate or attend the parade. Some of the churches are sending their parishioners straight to hell with their tolerance of homosexuality. The Bible is real clear on this; it is sinful in all ways. Len Lindsley Puget Island Editor's note:...

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 12-18 are Samantha McClain, Justin Perkins, Megan Miller, Marietta Montgomery, Jerry Ledtke, Sharrel Mooers, Jamie Kincaid, Cameron...
