  • Sewer system plan hits a snag

    Aug 16, 2012

To The Eagle: At last we have a sequel to the fascinating, cliff-hanger Saga of the Sewer to Nowhere. The gravity-defying engineering project slated to be our greatest future tourist attraction, the Cathlamet Uphill Sewer System (CUSS), has hit a challenging snag. Attempting to burrow under SR4 on its journey up the mountainside, it ran into a large boulder, a totally unexpected phenomenon in this sandy, loamy valley. The powerful Bureau of Transport and Alchemy was able help initially by levitating bedrock up and down, but attempts to bypass...

  • Our great volunteers; unfeasible ferry design

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

First, we are reminded once again of all the wonderful volunteers we have in our region. This week, we'll enjoy the county fair, largely run by volunteers. Last Sunday, volunteers put together a fabulous fund raiser for a cancer victim. The weekend before, we had volunteers putting on festivals in Skamokawa and Naselle, and the weekend before that, Cathlamet's Bald Eagle Festival and a new festival at the Grays River Valley Center. Volunteers put on a couple forums for political candidates in July. The Grays River Grange held one of their...

  • Fund raising garage sale for Kenzie Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

Have you had a chance to watch any of the meteor showers this week? With the clear skies most evenings, we have been enjoying a few sightings while sitting in the hot tub. What a relaxing way to spend the evening. I hope you have also taken advantage of the beautiful, warm weather this past week, but it looks like another weather alert for today with extremely warm temps. Remember to make sure your animals have lots of opportunity to get out of the heat and have access to fresh water. News from Naselle: I had an opportunity to try out the new...

Wahkiakum PUD customers have responded to the call for donations to help eligible low-income customers keep the power on in their homes, Wahkiakum PUD commissioners heard Tuesday. In mid-July, the fund balance stood at $90. Customers have the option to include a donation with their bill payments. Commissioner Dennis Reid suggested changes to financial reports Wilson provided to t...

  • Property values on the decline

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 9, 2012

Wahkiakum County Assessor Bill Coons has good news and bad news for property owners. The good news is that property valuations are going down to reflect trends in the real estate market. The bad news is that property tax rates may go up to meet the amounts already set for collection in tax levies. "Given our system of taxation, just because values go down doesn't mean taxes will go down commensurately," Coons said Tuesday. On Tuesday, Coons informed the board of county commissioners that after the valuation of property in eastern Wahkiakum...

  • Council okays $97,000 change order

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 9, 2012

By a 3-1 vote, Cathlamet Town Council members approved a $97,000 change order for the town's wastewater treatment plant construction project. The payment will cover the cost of a new design for running the lines under SR 4. The original design called for boring a tunnel under the highway, but the boring contractor encountered rock that put a stop to that plan. Engineers and the contractors discussed other methods of crossing the highway and settled on digging a trench for the conveyance lines. Construction will start as soon as possible, said...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 9, 2012

Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business Tuesday, ranging from hearing a report of a rabid bat to amending the county's road construction plans to allow pursuit of more money for construction of a new ferry. Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 2, 2012

SO-SO--Well, as this work week began, we've had some clouds and a bit of mist here and there, along with a few lighter clouds which gave us the warm and muggy feeling as well, but is just depended on where you were as to whether you were cloudy and cool, or cloudy and warm. Over the weekend we were just happy to have dry weather and it was pretty warm in spite of some clouds off and on. THIS IS IT--Yes indeed, the time has come for the first ever Mule Train All-School Reunion this Saturday. Now the event was advertised as noon to 5 p.m. but...

They have a free ride through the primary election to the general election, but candidates for Position 1 on the Wahkiakum PUD board of commissioners took their campaigns across the county last week by speaking in candidate forums in Cathlamet and Grays River. Incumbent Gene Healy and challenger Lisa Marsyla are running for Position 1, which represents Puget Island and South Cathlamet precincts. Incumbent Robert Jungers is unopposed in his bid for reelection and didn't participate in the forums. An accountant, Marsyla served as PUD auditor...

  • Pikeminnow station collects fish

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 2, 2012

A white van sits in the corner of the parking lot, overlooking the still waters of the Elochoman Slough Marina. A banner drapes over the vehicle’s rear-end announcing in red lettering, “Sport-Reward Fishery Registration Station." In a camp chair, at a fold-out table, Tyson (last name unavailable) signs up Wahkiakum County fishermen who are joining efforts to save salmon and getting paid to go fishing. This is all part of a program funded by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) called the Pikeminnow Sport Reward Fishery Program. Ess...

  • County boards comment on gillnet initiative

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 2, 2012

Northwest residents are slightly spoiled when it comes to our seafood consumption. With access to Columbia River spring and summer Chinook, there seems an abundance of the local treat. These salmon have brought fame to the Columbia River and are considered the finest available on the market. However, much is at stake to the prized, local food source as Oregon Initiative Petition No. 21 gains steam. Though the Columbia River gillnet fishery is the sole provider of local fish to mass markets, the initiative will eliminate non-tribal gillnetting...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Aug 2, 2012

It’s nice to see the Wahkiakum County Fair banner hanging across SR 4 once again! This is an indication that our fair is just a few weeks away. The heavy wooden sign has also been hung over the main entrance admission gate to welcome everyone as they walk into our fair. We appreciate the Wahkiakum PUD crew and the equipment they use to handle this important task each year! We are going into high gear this week as a lot of event details are finalized. Buildings will be cleaned and decorated as we get ready for the thousands of entries that we h...

  • Head to Vista Park for Vendor's Market

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

WET--As this work week begins, it's a little more than damp outside in the morning hours, and not exactly the summer type weather we were wishing we'd have by this time of year. We do seem to be getting some breaks by afternoon though, so the day isn't totally a wash! On the bright side, we don't have to worry about forest fires like they do in other states and out here in the valleys, we know our water systems will keep chugging along, so that that's the good part about seeing some of this wet stuff. For hay makers, it's been tough as the...

  • Enjoy lots of events at Bald Eagle Days

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 19, 2012

MIXED BAG--Well, this past week we've had some great sunny days, with nice warm temperatures, but we've also had some cloudy, windy days along with showers that fell on Sunday morning. Not what hay makers were wanting to see for sure! The super warm day on Monday gave the hay makers some hope to get things done, but a cloudy Tuesday morning was making them uneasy once again. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 19-25 are Rick Benfit, Bev Moonen, Al McClain, Stuart Bosch, Randy Montgomery, Lesley Horman, Suzet Parker, Brian...
