  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|May 3, 2012

Our new bleachers were delivered last week to the Fairgrounds. We expected them to arrive on a flat-bed truck so we could use equipment to unload them, but they arrived in an enclosed van-trailer. That changed our unloading plans! We unloaded by hand several tons of aluminum bleacher parts. Looking at their building plans, I am reminded of an erector set that we once bought my son, only this is way bigger! Thankfully, I’ve received some offers of help to get this project built when we get some nice weather. If the sun starts shining we will be...

  • Town correct to cut connection fees

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 3, 2012

A proposal for the Town of Cathlamet to cut its sewer connection fee to $100 makes sense to me. The reasoning, say town officials, is lower fees will draw more connections and customers to the system, and that by having more customers of the sewer system, the financial load of operating the system and constructing a new wastewater treatment plant would be lower. The council is considering another proposal that would raise rates from $45 per month for town residents to $80 per month in June, 2014. Rates for out-of-town customers would increase f...

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 2, 2012

The Wahkiakum PUD water crew is working to lessen and prevent ongoing water losses in both the Western Wahkiakum and Puget Island Water Systems, PUD commissioners heard at Tuesday’s meeting. PUD Manager Dave Tramblie displayed a section of pipe with a broken coupling. Water crew members replacing crossings on Puget Island discovered the break and removed the broken piece. Estimated water loss for that break was a gallon a minute, said Tramblie. During the early hours of Saturday, the water crew installed two bypass meters around three v...

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Apr 26, 2012

The rummage and book sale held at the fairgrounds last week-end was a big success! Kathy Elliott and Maureen Zacher-Bockius set prices and visited with many people as they stopped by. Jerry Ledtke entertained us with some sweet sounding acoustic guitar music as we enjoyed the sunny day together and waited for more customers to stop in. If you didn’t stop by, try to attend the next sale, we have treasures and books for all ages. Watch this column for the next sale week-end announcement. The funds we raise at our sales go directly toward s...

  • German singer volunteers for farm work

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 26, 2012

Olivia Stahn wanted to see the countryside while she traveled the United States, so she spent a week volunteering at Carol Carver and George Exum’s Island’s End Farm on Puget Island. Stahn, a resident of Berlin, Germany, explained that she had grown up in the countryside and longed for more time away from city life. Eating organic foods are important to many Germans, said Stahn, adding that the country as a whole had been ecologically minded for many years. DNR officials reviewed the plans Tuesday with Wahkiakum commissioners Dan Cothren and Blair Brady (Commissioner Lisa Marsyla was absent because of family illness). The timber trust revenue is an important part of the revenue for the county's Current Expense Fund, which finances most county offices. St. Helens District...

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 19, 2012

EVERYTHING--Last week was full of rain, hail, sleet, thunder, wind and sunshine and warmth; a typical spring mix! As long as the list doesn't include earthquakes and tsunamis, tornadoes or hurricanes, we'd better count our blessings! I received a picture of a funnel cloud near Wauna, from the wild weather we had last Thursday, but luckily it didn't build into anything serious! • Town, county continue library talks

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 19, 2012

Officials from the Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County agreed Tuesday to continue discussions of the town's request for support of a temporary relocation of the Bradley Library to the Cathlamet Food Mart Building in Rosedale. Commissioners Dan Cothren and Lisa Marsyla indicated they would consider contributing to rent payments, but they showed little support for the town's request to waive sewer connection fees for the mini-mall. "Those are two separate issues," Cothren commented. The town is looking for temporary quarters for the library,...
