Council members also discussed the possibility of raising sewer rates $35 over a 20-month period. Council members voted 4-1 to repeal the ordinance which has governed the fire department since 1932. The ordinance put control of the fire department under the now defunct Cathlamet Commercial Club. It also provided that fire department members would elect their chief and officers. Over the years, the department...
To The Eagle: Over 26 years I have relied on the Elochoman Marina to take my showers. Eighteen of those years I lived on my boat at the marina, until the staff members collaborated with a pike minnow fisherman falsely accusing me of threatening to shoot him. I'm guilty of shooting a picture of his boat that I sold him earlier. The marina wanted to get rid of me because I called the sheriff when drunken parties went on all times of the night. After 18 years, they evicted me from the marina. Last time I was accused of shooting anyone was in the...

So, the Town of Cathlamet has a new ordinance governing the operation of the Cathlamet Fire Department. It takes effect five days after today, the day it is published. You can find a summary of the ordinance on Page 8 of this week's edition. If you've been following this issue, the town's fire department has been operating under an ordinance developed in 1932, which put supervision of the department under the now defunct Cathlamet Commercial Club, subject to approval by the town council. Mayor George Wehrfritz and state auditors have said this...

BRRR--As I begin this column, we've got snow mixed with rain and temps in the 30s so it's definitely much colder than the end of last week. At least when we see snow falling, we know it's cold and don't get fooled into thinking it's nicer than it really is. As I wrap up this week's column, the snow is really coming down but with a little luck, by the time you read this, the snow will be over and done with for the year! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 15-21 are Connie Bassi, Lucy Bosch, Randy Hoven, Pat Kehrli, Carol...

Port District 1 commissioners discussed navigational buoys and marina user concerns at their March 8 meeting. Puget Island commercial fisherman Mike Backman told the commissioners he had talked with some fishermen who don’t care for Freshwater News, a publication available to read in the marina office, because they feel it represents an anti-commercial fishing viewpoint. He suggested subscribing to the Columbia River Gillnetter and displaying both publications. Port Manager Jackie Lea explained that the port does receive a copy of the G...
Wahkiakum County commissioners this week delayed acting on a resolution to loan Wahkiakum PUD $1.2 million from the county treasurer's investment fund. Wahkiakum PUD has requested the loan to help finance construction of a new $3 million substation at Cathlamet. PUD Manager David Tramblie has said that the PUD has $1.8 million in reserves, so it needs another $1.2 million to complete the project. The treasurer's investment portolio includes reserves from Wahkiakum County, the PUD, Wahkiakum School District, port districts and small taxing...
The Cathlamet Town Council held a special meeting last Friday and affirmed the selection of an architectural firm to design the remodeling of the old town hall and library. Mayor George Wehrfritz said a committee composed of librarians and library board members evaluated the seven firms that responded to a request for qualifications to design the project. The committee recommended Chesshir Architecture PC of Portland. The firm, Wehrfritz said, has much experience with renovating old buildings in Portland, and that was a major factor in the...
To The Eagle: It is heartening to read that county officials are taking seriously the impact a magnitude 9 earthquake will have in Wahkiakum County. While it is true that the risk of tsunami related problems here is low, we shouldn't be lulled into a sense of false security. In fact, geologists have determined that we are right on the edge of the zone of highest severity for the earthquake itself. So when we talk about bridge approaches being destroyed, we are talking about the Puget Island and Elochoman River bridges. We can also expect the...
For the 14th time in school history, the Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team has journeyed east to the “B” state basketball tournament and returned to Cathlamet with hardware in the bag. The Mules earned their fourth 4th-place finish after going 2-1 this past weekend at the Spokane Arena, falling short against the Adna Pirates on Thursday night before turning around to knock off the Lake Roosevelt Raiders and the Dayton Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Mules struggled out of the gate against Adna, giving up four offensive reb...
NOT SO SUNNY--Well, as this week begins, I think everyone was looking forward to the forecasted nice day on Sunday, which we assumed meant some sunshine, but as I begin this column, so far we have only seen cloudy weather out here in West Valley and no hint of sunshine at all. Of course, it's not raining, so I guess dry will have to do. However, as I am adding to this on Monday evening, we're getting a light layer of snow coming down, so obviously winter is not going to be leaving before its time is due. Think Spring, which starts March 20! We...
Wahkiakum PUD commissioners voted on Tuesday to add an informational line item regarding utility tax on invoices sent to Puget Island Water System ratepayers, but they held off adjusting fees to recoup the cost of a recent increase in the tax the utility pays to the town. The Cathlamet Town Council passed a resolution in December to increase their utility tax from 3 to 6 percent, and the new tax rate went into effect for the billing cycle subsequent to February 18. The town supplies all water for the Puget Island Water System. For residential c...
