It was time to fall a few more dangerous trees in the Fairgrounds Park. Commissioner Dan Cothren is falling those old leaning trees for us. They are big and some of them are growing in groups of many trees in a small area. Not a problem for Dan, he is an experienced timber faller. The plan was to get those trees cut down and cut up into firewood before the leaves start forming on the branches. We had a big volunteer crew cleaning up the branches and cutting up firewood last week-end. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the fairgrounds and...
Wahkiakum PUD has requested a $1.2 million loan from Wahkiakum County to help finance construction of a new substation at Cathlamet. Commissioners and PUD officials discussed aspects of the loan at the Tuesday meeting of the county commission. A resolution and supporting documents hadn't reached the commissioners, so they said they would consider the matter again on March 13. Treasurer Paula Holloway, who is retiring at the end of the month, said such a loan wouldn't adversely impact her investment portfolio. The portfolio includes reserves...
Wahkiakum PUD commissioners voted on Tuesday to add an informational line item regarding utility tax on invoices sent to Puget Island Water System ratepayers, but they held off adjusting fees to recoup the cost of a recent increase in the tax the utility pays to the town. The Cathlamet Town Council passed a resolution in December to increase their utility tax from 3 to 6 percent, and the new tax rate went into effect for the billing cycle subsequent to February 18. The town supplies all water for the Puget Island Water System. For residential c...

Once again, it’s time to check in with all the department superintendents that volunteer their help before and during fair. These volunteers keep their exhibitor paperwork organized and their departments or barns looking great each day of the Fair. As I made phone calls and sent out many e-mails, I realized we are so lucky to have this big group of volunteers that give so freely of their time! When you pick up a fair book this year be sure to read through the list of department superintendents, we all owe them many thanks for helping create a...
The Mule Train heads to Spokane for the state tournament today (Thursday) following a last second (literally) victory over the Grizzlies of Bear Creek High School last Friday in Mt.Vernon. The Mules went into the game against the District 1/2 Champion Grizzlies as huge underdogs, with many in the online community (bsports.org) considering Bear Creek a lock to reach Spokane. Wyatt Parker opened the game with a short jumper in the lane to give the Mules a quick 2-0 lead, but the Mules quickly found themselves trailing 5-2 after a pair of Grizzly...

submitted by Richard Swart Fire District 4 volunteer firefighters will hold an old-fashioned “Boot Campaign” Saturday and Sunday at the Cathlamet Chevron gas station on SR 4 to raise money for the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program (KDCCP). For at least 150 years, firefighters across America have turned out in force to hold out their boots to collect funds for charity. “This year, our members decided we wanted to serve the community some way in addition to fighting fires,” said District Fire Chief Jim Wilson. “Doing something t...
After publication of last week's edition, Cathlamet Council Member Dick Swart contacted The Eagle and requested a retraction, saying he was misquoted in an article about the council's discussion of a proposed ordinance for management of the Cathlamet Fire Department. The sentence read, " If there are errors, it’s the fault of the fire chiefs.” In an email, Swart wrote: The context at the February 22, 2012 Council meeting was my response to comments in First assistant Fire Chief Duncan Cruickshank’s monthly report about proposed Ordinance 548-1...
Wahkiakum County commissioners interviewed three candidates nominated to step in as county treasurer with the pending retirement of incumbent Paula Holloway, who announced in early Feburary that she would retire at the end of the month. Nominated by the Wahkiakum County Democratic Central Committee, the three candidates displayed different backgrounds in interviews on Tuesday. After the interviews, the commissioners recessed into executive session to discuss the candidates. The commissioners adjourned without taking action; they have said they...
To The Eagle: I'm writing you to announce I'm running for county commissioner for District 1. I read last week's Eagle and Lisa Marsyla's letter saying she wouldn't be seeking reelection. I want to thank Lisa for a job well done in serving her constituents. I'd like the opportunity to do the same. If you have questions for me, email me at mike.backman4421@gmail.com. Mike Backman Cathlamet...
To The Eagle: On behalf of the Tsuga Art Association, I'd like to give a big thanks to all of you who joined us at the Tsuga Gallery for another opening this past Friday. We were quite amazed at how many people came, considering the rainy weather and after dark winter hours for the reception. Also, we'd like to extend a very special thanks to Gerry Ledtke and Rick Nelson who took the time to share their beautiful acoustic guitar music with us throughout the evening. It was much appreciated. The support we feel from all of you in this community...
To The Eagle: Our community deserves to know the context behind the Town Council's effort to draft a new ordinance governing the Cathlamet Fire Department (CFD). Unfortunately, The Eagle's recent coverage has failed to put this important legislation into perspective. Allow me to remedy that with a few important points: 1) The CFD has been operating virtually without Town oversight since 1932. Yes, our volunteers do fine work and have saved many lives over the years. But the culture within the department is openly hostile to the Town. Council...

On February 24, 6 to 8 p.m., the Tsuga Gallery will host an open house and artists' reception. The gallery opened in late November during a total remodel of the 100-year-old building. Now work on the main gallery is complete, and the open house is an opportunity to introduce the new gallery and member artists to the community. The Tsuga Artists' Association now has by-laws and a corporation status and membership is open to area artists. Those interested can stop by the gallery to obtain an information packet. The open house will have food,...
Cathlamet will soon be a busy place with the start of three or four construction projects scheduled for this year. Town officials and engineers will meet with their contractor today (Thursday) to go over the plans for the start of the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant. Engineer Thomas Zerkel of Gray and Osborne, Inc., said the contractor will start with installation of a main from the existing treatment plant up 2nd Street and across to the new plant site. The contractor should be clear of the lower section of the street around...
Wahkiakum PUD commissioners met February 21 at Rosburg Hall in fulfillment of their commitment to holding one meeting every quarter this year in the Westend of Wahkiakum County. Commissioner Bob Jungers asked PUD Manager Dave Tramblie to report on customer response to the yearlong moratorium on a system development fee for new water customers. The PUD has received payment for two planned water hookups, said Tramblie, and has had 12 inquiries in total. He explained that the fee moratorium was implemented as an incentive in order to increase the...
Crew of the ferry "Wahkiakum" went to the aid of a sailboat in distress last Saturday. According to county Public Works Director Pete Ringen, skipper Shawn Mace and deckhand Jon Arness noticed a sailboat was having trouble off Puget Island and they went to investigate. They found a woman aboard who was calling for help. A male crew member who had been steering the boat had been knocked overboard by the boom. Although the man had gotten back on board, he was suffering hypothermia. The ferry crew towed the sailboat to the Island ferry landing...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council on Tuesday gave first approval to an ordinance to put the direction of the Cathlamet Fire Department under control of town officials. The department has been operating under an ordinance adopted in 1932 which put control under the Cathlamet Commercial Club, which no longer exists. The latest audit of the town by the Washington State Auditor's office said the arrangement doesn't meet state law and needed to be changed. The ordinance entirely repeals the previous ordinance and provides standards for...
