  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Feb 9, 2012

We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. As they shoveled out rocks they found the concrete enclosure was crushed and the pipe was squashed flat. It is fixed now and next time, far in the future I hope, we...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Feb 2, 2012

Wow! Twenty people filled out applications for 12 positions on the Wahkiakum County fair board! I think our county commissioners had some tough decisions to make selecting board members. The selected board members will use their skills and knowledge to help plan many new projects at the fairgrounds. I am looking forward to working with the fair board members at our fund raising events in 2012 and discussing new ideas for activities at our fairgrounds. The Wahkiakum County Fair Board members are Bill Chamberlain, Jim Moten, Joe Blalock, Phil...

  • Happy ending for Glory and family

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 2, 2012

I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. She may have had to travel some distance to make it back home as she was quite emaciated, but is recovering nicely. I love to tell happy stories. Welcome home, Glory, and I’m happy to see you back with you...

  • Sewer line omission may delay 3rd St. work

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 1, 2012

Cathlamet 3rd Street paving project may not take place this year as planned. The project calls for widening the street and installing sidewalks roughly from the Elochoman Slough Marina to the SR 4 intersection, about two blocks in length. Cathlamet town council members thought they would be voting to authorize a call for bids on the project when they met January 25 to hold a meeting postponed from January 17 because of bad weather. Town officials learned in January that the project hadn't taken into consideration the old clay-pipe sewer line th...

  • Skamokawa Grange has busy schedule

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 26, 2012

DOMINATING WEATHER--Once again the weather has been the dominant source of conversation as the snow began to melt, the lowland areas began to flood and the wind began to howl, which meant trees were coming down, slides were happening here and there and power outages also happened. By the time our neighbors to the south got hammered with most of the rain, and our neighbors to the north were dealing with a batch of snow and freezing rain, we were actually sitting in a pretty good spot by comparison. I have to admit, I'm ready for winter to be...

  • School board considers dual sport athletics

    Ruby Murray|Jan 26, 2012

The Wahkiakum School Board reviewed a policy prepared by athletic staff regarding dual sport participation, learned of an incident of drug abuse at school, and conducted routine business at its meeting Monday. The board learned that five high school students had been involved in inhaling or huffing “canned air.” Products used to clean computer keyboards contain two ingredients, tetrafluoroethane and difluoroethane, which can be fatal when mixed and inhaled. High school Principal Dan Casler said it took quite a bit of investigative work to lea...

  • Put the public back into PUD

    Jan 26, 2012

To The Eagle: In the past year, the Daily News has had numerous letters referring to the disregard local PUDs have for the payers. The management style seems to be in the image of ENRON. The most telling was at a meeting of Public Utility District #1 of Wahkiakum County this past year when it was announced that there would be no public comment. After a query to the legal counsel of said PUD, I was informed that PUDs are not required to take public input. Question: why are they called Public Utility Districts? P.J. Fleury Cat...

  • GRVC to be designated a Red Cross Shelter

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 26, 2012

Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. It looks like more is on the way, so guess I’d better do a little stocking up. My husband and I watched our dogs run down the hill from the house on Sunday and followed to see what they were after. Lo and behold, stuck in an icy pond close to the Grays River, was a sea gull. What a sight! He...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Jan 26, 2012

The Washington State Department of Agriculture grant papers for our new bleachers have been signed by all the appropriate people and Mr. Chuck Beyer told me I can order the bleachers! After an email to the company representative I think I may wait a few months before I place that order. The order will take only four weeks to be completed and this time of year it is still too wet to get the area prepared where these bleachers will be set up. Once in place, they will be there permanently because they weigh a lot even though they are aluminum. My...

  • Lots more about former gas stations

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 19, 2012

IT'S SNOW TIME!--The big news since Saturday night has been the snow! It began falling around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and as I begin writing this column, the snow is still coming down in West Valley. The white-out conditions on this Martin Luther King Day have made for some very pretty photos as everything is now under a nice, new blanket of white. With temperatures in the 20s on Sunday night, the new flakes gave us white roads again, and then the several hours of new snowfall began to add up quickly. The birds were not too impressed and...

  • PUD begins union negotiations, plans Feb. 21 meeting in Rosburg

    Ruby Murray|Jan 19, 2012

(Editor's note: Our original headline had the incorrect date for a PUD meeting planned in Rosburg to consider a time for meetings in the Westend. The correct date is Feb. 21) The Wahkiakum County Public Utility District board met Tuesday to conduct routine business. General Manager Dave Tramblie received a letter from the union which opens contract negotiation. An initial meeting may be held in mid-February, he said. The board made plans to hold their next regular meeting at the Rosburg Hall on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. and to decide after that what...

  • Commissioners OK bill for assessor 2-1

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 19, 2012

By a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners approved payment of a $7,720 bill for a contractor's assistance to the county assessor's office. The payment went to Hagen and Son, LLC, for services dating back to July, 2011. Assessor Bill Coons used the firm to provide assistance in getting valuations done by deadline. Commissioners paid the bill unhappily. They and Coons had gone back and forth last year over funding for extra help, and when the commission refused to give Coons the funding he wanted, he said he would engage a contractor....

  • Local fills in gas station history

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 5, 2012

FIRST COLUMN OF NEW YEAR--Well, here we go into another year and we have started out this new year very nicely; warmer temps and sunshine even! As we had a nice weekend, it was the perfect time to take down the outside lights while they were dry, and by Monday afternoon, they were definitely soaking wet, if they hadn't blown away. That was some strong squall that popped up in the late afternoon/early evening hours; thankfully it didn't last too long. They say we may have some rain by the end of the week, we may even get another break. The last...
