Merry Christmas to the Wahkiakum County Fair! This is what I was thinking after opening a letter from the State of Washington, Department of Agriculture. Last October I applied for a grant from the Department of Agriculture to replace two of our old wooden bleachers. The new bleachers that I asked funding for are aluminum, seat 91 people each, they have an aisle in the middle with a hand rail for easy access to the seats and are enclosed on the back and sides with a chain link guardrail. Knowing we would be facing a limited 2012 budget, I...
The Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Wednesday, 2 p.m., to consider the possible closure of the upper Elochoman Valley Road. A landslide blocked the road near Milepost 10.3 last Friday, and the County Road Department had to clean rock and debris to reopen the road. On Tuesday, Public Works Director said he was concerned about the stability of the slope above the road, which consisted of fractured basalt. Ringen has asked a geo-technical engineer to check the slope and give an evaluation so that he can prepare...
To The Eagle: At a time when we are trying to conserve our resources it bothers me that the beautiful greetings cards I receive go in the trash. I went online and found there are places that recycle and repurpose these cards so I'm asking for your help. If you would like to donate your cards to the St. Judes Ranch for children, remove the fronts of the cards, (no Hallmark, American Greetings or Disney cards, please.) Also there should be no writing on the back of the card. Take them to the Tsuga Gallery in Cathlamet, Thursday through Saturday,...

BRR!--I am very happy that we are not flooding or buried in snow or being blown to bits by strong winds, but I have to admit, I'm having a tough time warming up after these last few days of below freezing temperatures and heavy fog, which keeps the sun hidden until mid-day. It's great to see the sun when it comes out, but it sort of fools you into thinking it's warm outside but just step out there with no jacket on and boy howdy, you'll be right back in the house grabbing a coat--brr! However, it looks like we'll be seeing it warm up a bit and...

Cathlamet town council members held a special meeting November 30 to approve an increase to the 2012 regular property tax levy for town residents. The council voted to implement the 1 percent increase allowed without seeking a vote of town residents. The council had determined that the town required a regular levy in the amount of $71,000. The authorized increase came to $3,332.98, not including any additional revenue derived from new construction or property improvements. Town clerk-treasurer Tina Schubert clarified that authorization for an...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved final budgets for 2012, maintaining the conservative tone they established several years ago in the face of declining revenues. Their theme this year has been to get department spending levels back to 2010, or lower. Assessor Bill Coons implored the board to give him funds for hire part-time personnel, but they rejected his pleas. They also rejected a plea for a change in how state funds are spent for the Wahkiakum County Fair, and board Chair Lisa Marsyla couldn't get a second on her motion...
To The Eagle: The world's largest central banks have agreed to work together to "solve the global financial crisis." In truth, the central banks of the world have deliberately caused the global financial crisis. By offering to solve a worldwide problem they have created they have revealed their real goal which is financial, economic and political control of the nations. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank recently appointed the new Prime Minister of Greece. The world needs sound money now. Thanks to mon...
To The Eagle: I've been using the Wahkiakum Ferry since the mid-1960s, both to work and going to work. During that time until now I've had the privilege to ride and work with these two great skippers, Gary Bergseng and Dan Eaton, both in retirement now. Their service will be missed by all. Olaf Thomason, Sr. Cathlamet...

WET BEGINNING--As this week began, it was soggy on Sunday and made for a miserable day if you had to be outside for any reason. I hope you're getting letters written to the "powers that be" and also get your Christmas cards mailed out as the countdown is really on. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from December 1-7 are Mike Linn, Joan Mathis,...
