The Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Wednesday, 2 p.m., to consider the possible closure of the upper Elochoman Valley Road. A landslide blocked the road near Milepost 10.3 last Friday, and the County Road Department had to clean rock and debris to reopen the road. Cathlamet town council members held a special meeting November 30 to approve an increase to the 2012 regular property tax levy for town residents. The council voted to implement the 1 percent increase allowed without seeking a vote of town residents. The council had determined that the town required a regular levy in the amount of $71,000. The authorized increase came to $3,332.98, not including any additional revenue derived from new construction or property improvements. It was a fun 4-H Jamboree Event that Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal organized last Saturday at the Wahkiakum High School. The Jamboree was attended by 4-H’ers of all ages and they made decorated cookies, delicious fudge, berry jams and created a multitude of crafts items. The kids completed all the projects by themselves with a little guidance and a tiny bit of help from the 4-H leaders and parent volunteers that attended. Former area resident, Ragnar “Hokey” Hokanson, 89, passed away November 28, 2011 at his home in Oregon City, Ore., where he has resided since 1972. He was born on Puget Island, October 29, 1922 to Ture and Edith (Hellstrom) Hokanson. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1940 and the University of Washington in 1960. He married Marilyn Wilson in 1943; she preceded him in death on May 23, 2009. On May 16, 2011 he married Sharon Benedick; she survives him at home. Ragnar served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Longview resident Patrick Eugene Madden, 66, passed away November 27, 2011. He was born March 1, 1945 in Hawthorne, Calif. to Howard and Mary Ann (Pilon) Madden. He moved with his family to Skamokawa in December 1950 and attended Skamokawa Grade School and in 1964 he graduated from Wahkiakum High School where, as a proud “Mule” he played on the state championship basketball and football teams. The Wahkiakum School Board met the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and considered allowing student athletes to participate in two sports concurrently.
