NICE BREAK--After the torrential rains we had, it is nice to have a bit of a dry streak. It seems we can't get the dry without the cold, but that's okay, as those heavy rains wind up causing so much grief, that I'd much rather deal with the nip in the air than the flood waters. At least I'm not buried in snow right now. It's bad enough for those still dealing with flooding problems; we certainly don't need to add snow to the mix. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from January 27-February 2 are Becky Thacker, Brandon McClain, Gary York,...

Associated Student Body leader Shelby Felton asked fellow students, “Do you know why we celebrate Martin Luther King Day?” The third-period world history class was quiet but then, with prompting, a few details of King’s life emerged. The sophomores, born years after King was assassinated, worked to find relevance of his life and teaching to their school community. Felton was one of six ASB leaders who researched King’s life and led discussions in World History classes at the high school Thursday. Students identified some of the words or teas...
Dr. Rick Still has expanded his Longview chiropractic practice to Cathlamet one day a week. “If Thursday fills up, I’d probably add Tuesday morning,” said Still, who shares space with Stephanie Crouse’s Simply Massage at 94 Main Street. Patients call Still’s Longview office to make appointments and can be referred there if they need x-rays before he can treat them. Still said he was en route to becoming an MD when he had an accident while wrestling. A chiropractor fixed his knee, and Still changed course. The Calgary, Alberta, native moved to...

DRYING OUT--Wow, was that a wild weekend or what? Just when you thought the rain would slow down, it started back up and boy, oh boy, it did not take long for the "lakes" to appear and spill over onto our roadways, which caused some of the usual road closures in our area. However, the big thing comes when the water starts to scour out from under the roadways as you never know when you go through the standing water, whether the pavement has any support under it. I'm not sure what the total amount of rain was, but in one 24 hour period, there was...

Wahkiakum County residents experienced flooding and land slides in a wet, rainy weekend. A wet weather system dumped 4.6 inches of rain in Cathlamet, 5.5 inches at the Town of Cathlamet water plant in the Elochoman Valley between 10 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. The heavy rain sent county streams out of their banks; residents of the Grays River, Elochoman and Skamokawa Creek basins all saw water over their roads. Some roads in the Grays River valley remained flooded and closed Monday. Land...
