His youthful appearance and quiet soft spoken manner belie local musician Layton Elliott’s nearly six decades on this planet, his gravelly baritone and mean guitar skills. Elliott really wanted a drum set when he was a young teen. What he got was a guitar from Montgomery Ward. Disappointment quickly turned to fascination. “I remember playing all day long,” Elliott said, “just to learn how to play. I had deep grooves in the ends of my fingers. When they started to bleed, I wrapped them with wh...

After the nice few days, the weekend turned into another wet one. Our son, Carl and his girlfriend Dion were here for the weekend from Seattle as well as other son, Shane. They had hoped to get some dry hiking in but that didn’t pan out, so they took the dogs for a damp one. It’s always so good to have kids home, and especially when they can do a few things around the place. Mom even got an oil change on the car. Thanks boys. And it was wonderful to see Dion again, such a delightful young lady. Good weekend, even if it did rain. News from Nas...

MIXED WEATHER--Folks went to bed last Wednesday night with a little standing water but by Thursday morning, it was overflowing everywhere with some driveways underwater and the high streams running a mucky brown color. Thankfully we had some sun breaks off and on Thursday, which gave some of the water a little time to flow out, as it wouldn't have taken long before we'd be driving the "tall" truck to get out of West Valley and other low lying areas. By Saturday night, the downpours returned and very early on Sunday morning, I thought we were...

Happy May Day everyone! Does anyone remember the little crepe paper May baskets we made as kids, filled them with odds and ends and candies and hung them on door knobs. GORGEOUS--As this week began, it was absolutely beautiful with nothing but sunshine and warm breezes, which felt oh so great! Actually, the entire weekend and even several days last week were great too, as my aching back can attest, as there were no bad weather excuses to put off digging into those flower beds! However, it looks like we'll all get to use the weather as an excuse by the time you read this, as more wet weather is due to move in, so I hope you got that lawn mowed and those new plants in the ground, as it's going to be time to...
Spring is definitely in the air with the smell of cherry blossoms, fresh mown grass, and many of the wildflowers beginning to bloom. The dogs are shedding their winter coats, and if you brush them outside and leave the fur, the birds are in a mad rush to pick it up and carry it off. A few butterflies are even appearing, and the hummingbird feeder needs to be refilled frequently. Nature sure has a beautiful way of beginning new life in the spring. News from Naselle Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams: Thursday (today), track at North...

The agency’s review was met with frustration, skepticism and fear that too little was being done and too many healthy elk would pay the price of current management decisions. According to Sandra Jonker, a regional wildlife manager for the WDFW, five...
