It’s nice to see the Wahkiakum County Fair banner hanging across SR 4 once again! This is an indication that our fair is just a few weeks away. The heavy wooden sign has also been hung over the main entrance admission gate to welcome everyone as they walk into our fair. We have many painting projects to finish before fair time and received some excellent help from The Farmers 4-H Club last week! Shawn Deal, the rabbit and cavy superintendent and Deb Gribskov, poultry superintendent, brought their 4-H club to the fairgrounds twice last week. Their first project was to paint the picnic tables with blue, lavender and pink paint. Wahkiakum County residents will be able hear political candidates discuss issues at two candidate forums next week. The Eagle is sponsoring a forum Monday, 7 p.m., at the Pioneer Community Center (Pioneer Church). The Grays River Grange is sponsoring a forum on Tuesday, 7 p.m., at the Grange hall in Grays River. How did you enjoy the thunder and lightning show last Friday night? It was great until we were awakened by our dogs barking and growling and raising a loud commotion. When we got up, we found an extra dog in the living room on our couch and he wasn’t about to leave with all the noise outside. It turned out to be our neighbor’s, Al and Nancy George's dog Butch, the brother of our older male dog. He doesn’t like these noisy nights, so went looking for a place to hide. GOT SUMMER--Everyone was happy to see the sun come out last week. It almost got a bit warm for me, but hey, it was nice to have dry for a change. Sunday morning saw us with some cloud cover though, so while it was dry, we didn't have that sunshine to perk us up first thing in the morning but at least it showed up by noon and we enjoyed another beautiful day. Naselle resident Charles LeRoy "Hoopy" Holm, 80, died July 4, 2012 in Longview, from complications related to Alzheimer’s. He was born in South Bend on May 22, 1932 the son of Forrest and Florence (Raemhild) Holm. Hoopy married his high school sweetheart Verna Penttila on May 5, 1951. He served during the Korean War and upon completion of his military service returned to Naselle and spent the rest of his working life as a heavy equipment logger for Penttila Logging and DeBriae Logging. When Mark Erickson began the restoration project of the exterior of the Deep River Lutheran Church, he had his work cut out for him. “There was about an inch of moss covering the building,” recalled Erickson who has donated both his time and energy to preserving the National Historical Site. An Evening of Spoken Word set for Deep River Pacific Northwest folk poet Gary Anderson and essayist Nick Nikkila will present An Evening of Spoken Word this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Deep River Legion Hall. The horse arena will be closed to open riding July 13-15. The Horsemanship Challenge Event will be held on July 14 followed by 4-H Horse Camp. The second Horsemanship Challenge Series event begins at 9 a.m. on July 14 at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds Arena. The break down for the age groups is Junior: 3rd – 5th grade, Intermediate: 6th – 8th grade, Senior: 9th - 12th grade and Adult: 19 years and up. The cost is $25 to run through the events. I guess it’s time to get back to work and the real world after an absolutely wonderful week with family and folks we consider to be a part of our family. We had the pleasure of housing all six of our kids and their spouses or significant other, all of our grandchildren and a great-grandson. Altogether we had about 54 people and 12 dogs in our little tent city. The weather cleared up nicely after the first night of showers and the rest of the time it was beautiful. SUMMER?--The first true day of Summer wasn't too bad, nor was the next, but then came the weekend and a front moved in with lots of wind beginning on Thursday afternoon, with some rain nailing us on Saturday morning. By evening, the sky had cleared and it wasn't too bad, so while it wasn't perfect, it was certainly better than we expected. Daniel A. “Arnie” Smalley, 78, of Rosburg, passed away June 20, 2012 in Portland. Dan was born January 7, 1934 to Daniel O. Smalley and Signe Buhakka in Ilwaco. He was raised in Frankfurt and Eden Valley. Dan attended school in Rosburg and Naselle. He also attended the University of Washington and served in the U.S. Army. Dan returned to the States, where he met and married Marilynn McIntire on June 22, 1961 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They established a home in Rosburg and have been there for over 51 years. GREAT ENDING--Last Friday was nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures. It was so nice, it was almost a shock to the system.
