TIME'S FLYING--Well, as you can see by the date, time is flying by super fast and we're already heading into our fourth week of the month. Where has the time gone and won't it please slow down? I think that ever since I was sick, I've been behind and cannot seem to get caught up on all the things I know that need doing before our rains come and don't leave. To top it all off, Autumn officially starts this Saturday, so say farewell to Summer. Let's hope for an Indian Summer and I'd say from the little heat wave of last weekend, we're headed in...
Photographer returns for Redmen Hall show Redmen Hall will be featuring local photographer Nick Deal, who has won many awards in photography in Washington and Oregon, for their next exhibit. Deal exhibited at Redmen Hall last year and is returning for a one man exhibit. His work takes a unique view of the environment, concentrating on the architecture of negative and positive space. The exhibit, entitled "As I See It," will open October 6 with a reception for the photographer at 1 p.m. The exhibit will run through the weekend of November 17-18...
As we wrap up summer, I will review some of the events our Grange was part of. In addition, I will recognize key people who made these events a success. Grays River Grange hosted this year’s salmon dinner at the Finnish American Folk Festival in Naselle. Nearly 200 dinners were purchased. Thanks to all who participated in this fund raiser for the Grange. We have been invited back to prepare the dinner for the 2014 Finn Festival. There were many comments on what an excellent dinner the Grange prepared. The salmon was superb, Scandinavian p...
The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team has split its first two matches of the season. Last Thursday at Naselle, the Mules won 25-20, 25-10, 25-12. "Baylee Olsen had 11 kills, six aces and four blocks," new Mule Coach Kayli Anderson reported. "Haylee Budd had 34 assists. Maya Stanley was solid on defense and serve receive." On Tuesday, the Mules traveled to Onalaska and lost 12-25, 21-25, 15-25. "We started slowly, and things didn't pick up enough for us to come up with a win," Anderson said. "It was a night of unforced errors on offense and the ser...
A balanced attack paved the way for the Wahkiakum Mules to overwhelm the host Winlock Cardinals 40-8 in a Central League football game last Friday. The Mules led 20-0 after one quarter, 27-0 at halftime, and the first string added two more touchdowns in the third quarter before giving way to the reserves. Winlock put its eight points on the board in the fourth quarter. Lars Blix completed eight of 10 passes for three touchdowns and 172 yards; he threw one interception. Steven Doumit caught four passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns; Kohl Bergs...
Our first outing of the season came last Tuesday at the Naselle Jamboree. Unfortunately only two teams were able to make it, Naselle and Wahkiakum. In that regard, it was a very quick meet. Naselle had no middle school girls ready yet so the Wahkiakum girls placed first and took all six top spots in this finishing order: 1. Shona Heywood 6:51.69, 2. Mya Kirzy 6:59.42, 3. Trynity Mendez 8:21.25, 4. Aly Kirzy 8:32.22, 5. Katy Stacey 9:56.72, and 6. Kyra Scuito 12.17. Shona and Mya are the only returning athletes for middle school, and they will...

When the fate of the Naselle Youth Camp seemed questionable in recent months, local residents feared a loss of jobs, a hit to the local economy and a decreased enrollment in schools. Residents and local government officials were adamant in the belief that the youth camp was essential to our community. Most recently, the young men living in the medium security facility are proving to be essential on the state level as well. Naselle Youth Camp residents, male offenders receiving educational and treatment services, have been on the front lines,...
Tucked just out of view from coast-bound traffic, people from all over the area filled the fields of Fred’s Homegrown Farm – a mock parking lot – and happily progressed from workshops, to cooking, exhibits, and through the farmers market. This, in addition to camping, music and late-night dancing, were all part of the weekend festivities called Farmstock, a regional, homegrown festival. Hosted by Fred Johnson who owns a 70-acre farm on South Valley Road in Naselle, locals were invited to bring farm goods, expertise, wares and t...
This week, I announce some changes in staff. Reporter Melissa Linquist is leaving us, more or less. When we hired her last spring, she was completing her student teaching. It looked like none of the local school districts would be hiring a full-time elementary school teacher, and she would be a substitute teacher. That would have allowed her to continue as our part-time reporter. Alas, the Ocean Beach School District experienced some staff changes in August, and when an elementary position came open, they snapped up our enterprising reporter....
I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend and enjoyed the nice weather we had as well. There were lots of things going on all over the area with yard sales, bake sales, Farmstock in Naselle, and barbecues with friends and family. Haymakers are still working on getting the bales made and stored away for the winter feedings. Derek Heitsch is making hay on one of our fields, and it seems to be taking forever with the moisture in the air during the nights. His cows will enjoy it later with all the nice clover from that field. News from Naselle:...
DAMP--As this week begins and the weekend ends, we're seeing some dampness out here in West Valley, which was definitely not in the forecast at least not for a couple more days. However, I'm sure all my plants and my poor dry lawn were happy to see the light misty stuff come down and give it a little drink. All of us on springs and wells were happy too, as every little bit helps after a long dry spell. On Monday morning the fog made for some heavy dew, but parts of my driveway were already dry by noon. This little spattering of rain isn't...

After nearly a month without rain, we drove in from Oregon on Sunday evening and looking to the west, sure enough, the rain was back. Not much though, just enough to irritate the farmers who are still making hay. News from Naselle: Before school begins for the 2012/13 year, many will be enjoying a last long weekend and finishing up their school shopping. Then back to the books. Here’s to a fantastic new school year. The first day of school will be on Tuesday. Check with the school office if you have questions about classes or bus schedules. S...
When Astoria Police found the car at 3:24 a.m. on August 16, the keys were in the ignition and the emergency lights were flashing. The owner, Traci Wirkkala, however was nowhere in sight. Wirkkala, 41, grew up in Deep River and now resides in Naselle. She has not yet been located. The US Coast Guard provided a helicopter to search the area, and Wirkkala was entered into the National Crime Information Center. Additionally, an attempt to locate was issued to other agencies. Police found the vehicle in response to a dispatch that an abandoned car...

Thank you Mother Nature, we really are getting a summer. This weather is great, not too hot for too long and it even cools down at night. We had the pleasure of Steve and Linda Ramsay’s grandchildren coming over for a hot dog roast with s’mores and ice cream the other night after they went swimming in the Grays River near our house. Kids sure have a way of brightening the day. Thank you for the kid fix, Sarah, Skyler, Logan, Brandon and Brenton. Come back any time. Oh yes, glad to have Steve, Linda, Brandon and Amanda as well. News from Nas...
First, we are reminded once again of all the wonderful volunteers we have in our region. This week, we'll enjoy the county fair, largely run by volunteers. Last Sunday, volunteers put together a fabulous fund raiser for a cancer victim. The weekend before, we had volunteers putting on festivals in Skamokawa and Naselle, and the weekend before that, Cathlamet's Bald Eagle Festival and a new festival at the Grays River Valley Center. Volunteers put on a couple forums for political candidates in July. The Grays River Grange held one of their...
Have you had a chance to watch any of the meteor showers this week? With the clear skies most evenings, we have been enjoying a few sightings while sitting in the hot tub. What a relaxing way to spend the evening. I hope you have also taken advantage of the beautiful, warm weather this past week, but it looks like another weather alert for today with extremely warm temps. Remember to make sure your animals have lots of opportunity to get out of the heat and have access to fresh water. News from Naselle: I had an opportunity to try out the new...
Home Depot employees showed local residents that they understand the impact of hard work and sweat equity. With the belief in the power of hands-on service, “Team Depot” volunteers joined community members at Lion’s Club Park in Naselle on Thursday to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. To the passersby, the park was spotted with bright orange t-shirts with the word “Team Depot” boldly printed across the chest. Inside, neighbors shoveled loose gravel into wheelbarrows, applied fresh coats of paint to existing structures, and planted new trees...
It looks like we have had our summer and we did indeed reach the 100 degree mark last Saturday. The marquee at the Naselle School actually said so, and lots of photos were taken of it. It was really hot. Thank goodness, it cooled off at night, and the misty mornings are welcome as far as I’m concerned. News from Naselle: In last week’s column I mentioned that there will be a new spot to get a cup of coffee in Naselle at the junction of SR 4 and SR 401. I’ve just had confirmation that Mochas & More will be opening this weekend on Saturday at no...

A new concrete walk weaves its way through Lions Club Park in Naselle. Metallic fish, children’s art and tiny hand prints line the path, highlighting the names of community members who have donated to the Lions Club Park Beautification Project. Led by Megan Tienhaara and Summer Johnson, both of Naselle, volunteers have been working tirelessly in preparation for the upcoming park remodel. Home Depot has selected the Naselle community to host a Team Depot Day. To get ready for the one-day event, Tienhaara and Johnson invited families to stamp t...
Although attendance was low on Friday, Saturday brought dry gray skies, comfortable temperatures, and a couple thousand attendees to the 16th biennial Finnish American Folk Festival in Naselle. They came from Bellingham to San Diego; Astoria to Washington, DC; Alaska to Florida and numerous points in between. Nineteen states, Canada, Norway, and Finland were represented. These descendants and friends of Finns gathered to enjoy the music of local performers and to learn about this culture by listening to the presentations, viewing the exhibits,...
