Naselle/Grays River Valley parents are excited at the prospect of their children beginning half-day courses in Mandarin Chinese. “The reality is, for a program like this to come to our area is something we cannot pass up. We need to instill that entrepreneurial attitude in our kids early so they don’t feel stuck in a rural community,” said Marijane Anderson whose son William will enter kindergarten in the fall. “This program is a gift and I’m excited that (husband) Wes and I can send our son to a school that hopefully will offer this. We...
When Becky Erickson started at Clatsop Community College 18 years ago, her youngest son Alan was almost three. At that time, the mother of four boys was going to school for her own personal growth. “I’ve always loved teaching children and so I decided to pursue getting my Early Childhood Education certificate. In 2008, due to my years of experience, I was hired to teach at the Naselle-Grays River Valley School for the ECEAP (Early Childhood Educational and Assistanct Program) preschool, a state funded program for eligible families. At the sam...
To The Eagle: My name is Bill Wiester of Moses Lake. I was raised in Skamokawa when I was a youngster. When I was 21, I was sent to Vietnam with the 82nd Airborne Division and served as an infantry platoon sergeant. In June of 1969, I received a letter from my mother, Jean Wiester. She attended Naselle High School in the 1940s and has sinced passed away. I read this letter, and a paragraph talked about my first cousin, Bob Wegdahl of Cathlamet. My mother wrote that Bob was going to take me salmon fishing on the Columbia near Puget Island. I...
The Wahkiakum Community Network (WCN) has been working to improve the lives of youth and families in our area for some time. With Kellyn Pakenen Hazen, the new Public Relations Coordinator, on staff, the WCN prepares for the birth of a new idea. A year ago, the Network board of directors brainstormed an idea that they coined the Neighborhood Information and Community Exchange (NICE). “NICE will be my first big project,” said Pakenen Hazen who replaced Tammy Peterson, the new chairman of the board, in December. “We want to connect community memb...
Where, oh where, is our summer? Rain, rain and more rain. I certainly hope it dries out soon so that the hay makers can get their fields mowed and baled. If the grass grows any higher we will be calling out the sheriff to go into the fields to find the tractors and their drivers. As least that’s how tall it is in our fields. We have seen elk and deer actually jumping up to see over the grass, to find their way, I assume. It is supposed to be summer now. News from Naselle: Don’t forget the second Annual Silent Auction sponsored by The Fri...
The stretch of road that joins Wahkiakum and Pacific Counties was decorated on June 9 with blue and gold balloons and signs marking the places where graduation parties would be held later in the evening. Naselle-Grays River Valley Seniors were celebrating their high school graduation, and the community rose to the occasion. At the school, cars overflowed from the parking lot though the Class of 2012 was comprised of only 20 students; a symbol of local support. The ceremony began on a light note with Austin Smith offering a warm welcome to his...
BRIEFLY WARMER--As this week began, we'd warmed up a bit from the wet and windy spell we had at the end of last week, so that's been nice. But by Tuesday morning, all was soaking wet again. This is pretty typical Spring weather with it springing a leak quite often! Let's hope for some drier days more events are happening which would really benefit from some dry weather conditions. COMING RIGHT UP--One of those events that would benefit from drier weather would be the second softball game between the Guns and Hoses teams this weekend at the high...

She later resided in...
To The Eagle: When we chose Bill Wilkins to be our realtor, it changed our life. We had been looking for property in the Naselle area where we lived, and put Bill in charge of finding us the perfect home. We looked at many different properties, and during our jaunts Bill would talk about Wahkiakum County, it's history, and it's people. His love of this place and the people here really came across and we found ourselves looking for property here as well. Bill did find us the perfect home, here in Cathlamet, and it's all Bill said it was and...

The Friends of the Naselle Library are holding their second Annual Silent Auction from June 14 through June 26. WET--As I begin this column on Monday, it's a bit soggy out here, making me glad we got the lawn mowed yesterday. It seems to be growing before our eyes and I'm sure it will need it again by the time we get another nice day. The forecast is a mix of clouds, showers and some drying periods, which some might interpret to mean, they don't know and have covered all their bases! NOT BAD--The Seventh Annual Rods and Reels Rod Run didn't have as many cars show up as in the past, but was still a great turnout in spite of the occasional drizzle. By the...

News from Naselle: The Naselle-Grays River Valley High School class of 2012 will bid farewell to one chapter of their lives on Saturday when they accept their diplomas, graduating from high school. The ceremony will take place in the gym at 4 p.m. This group of students will take their place in the new world of learning when they make their decisions on where to go from here. SO-SO--The big Memorial weekend has come to an end and while it wasn't a total bust for weather, it could have been better. While some were enjoying sunshine on Saturday, most of us here in Skamokawa were stuck in sea fog and windy conditions, which meant it was a bit nippy, especially for those on the beach. On Sunday things were a little warmer but still mostly cloudy, while Monday morning saw us with wet roads at first, but then it dried out enough to mow the lawn. Last week we had an unusual day with quite a bit of thunder, and it really...

To The Eagle: Tuesday evening, May 8, I attended a very informative meeting regarding the proposed replacement Bond Levy for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District. This meeting was for a community conversation with BLRB Architects. The most disappointing thing about the meeting was there were only six community people in attendance. The rest were teachers, administrators, board members and representatives from the architect firm. There will be another meeting June 5 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. I urge everyone to attend. The...
Is anyone else being swarmed with hummingbirds? I have never seen so many at the same time. My feeders have to be refilled daily and sometimes there are two birds eating at the same time on each of the little flowers for a total of six birds on each feeder. They are amazing little creatures. My cats are just about crazy looking at them through the window, especially when a bird will hover on the other side of the glass where the cat’s staring. News from Naselle: Less than two weeks left in the 2012 school year, with several important events com...

GORGEOUS--I hope all of you have been slathering on the sunscreen as we've really had a wonderful stretch of sunshine lately! Having this dry, warm weather means we often stay in the sun a little too long, so whether you are working or playing in it, I hope you're keeping safe, and taking precautions for yourself and children. Hats, umbrellas, sun screen and shade are great ways to ward off the bad part while still enjoying the wonderful sunshine and soaking up some great Vitamin D. As we all know, this wonderful weather can't last forever,...
