  • FAFF concert brings back sock hops

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 17, 2010

School’s out, but where is summer? Only a few teaser days so far, so that must mean it will be a warm late summer, right? After our whirlwind weekend last weekend it was great to come home and just sit for a while. We attended a high school graduation in Redmond. Oregon on Friday night for our grandson and got up the next morning for the four hour drive to Ellensburg for the college graduation at 1:30 p.m. Lots of driving and lots of celebrating (not to mention, while in Oregon, we celebrated three birthdays as well). Time certainly does f...

  • Naselle's class of 2010 ready to move on

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 10, 2010

It is beginning to look like the warmer weather will be here sometime soon. The sun has actually shown a few days in a row, as well. I also see plants poking their heads up out of the gardens, so maybe, just maybe we will have a summer this year. News from Naselle: High school graduation! A whole new chapter in life for the class of 2010, after 13 years in school, muddling through all the pains and joys of growing up to this point, and now—where to from here? Just coming this far has been a huge accomplishment for many and we need to commend th...

  • Ceremonies honor outstanding students

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 3, 2010

As I sit here writing this column, I’m more than a little sore after a wonderful weekend with our kids in central Oregon and our oldest son and his family from California. On a whim we decided to try out our new rain gear and make the trip on the Harley. It worked out great except that my husband’s boots weren’t waterproof. Needless to say, wet, cold feet don’t make a guy very happy. After a five-hour ride, we arrived and began to enjoy the weekend. On Saturday we headed to Smith Rock for some hiking and four hours later we were all headed...

  • Grange to get security system after 60 years

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 27, 2010

WET--It's hard to believe that we're at the end of another month and well into Spring, but we are still experiencing plenty of rain. We got a bit of a break on the first day of this work week but as Tuesday morning rolled around, it was pouring once again. The forecast was not looking too great, so we can only hope that a batch of wind shows up and blows these rain clouds elsewhere, as this soggy and nippy weather is sure getting old! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 27-June 2 are Don Anderson, 67'er Linda Toste, Mary Ann...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|May 27, 2010

Smashed and flattened! It was a mighty wind storm that knocked over the big cottonwood tree at the fairgrounds. We were lucky it fell where it did, it missed the cyclone fence and fell away from the restroom building. Sadly, the two balloon toss little buildings are history. Looks like another project for Jeff! Some good things are happening too. Handyman Jeff Beerbower has built new steps and put new railings on the mini-stage. This is very important to entertainment committee chairman Jerry Ledtke, as he is planning to hire a country rock...

  • Students sign drink-drive pledge

    May 27, 2010

During the weeks of May 10-21 Wahkiakum Community Network partnered with Wahkiakum School District and Naselle-Grays River Valley School District to hold "No Drinking and Driving" pledge drives. Students were given the opportunity to sign the pledge which read: I promise not to drink and drive; to encourage my friends not to drink and drive; and I will not ride in a car when the driver has been drinking. Student leaders at both sites volunteered all week to host the pledge drive. There were a total of 235 students and staff who signed the...

  • Graduation on the horizon

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 27, 2010

Is it ever going to be spring? It has been so cold; I’m surprised any gardens are growing. Some folks haven’t even planted yet. Hopefully it will warm up soon. News from Naselle: It’s hard to believe another school year is about to end. The kids that are graduating this year are the class that I volunteered in when we first moved here. This class has come a long way and we should be very proud of them. No matter what they choose to do, I wish them well, and much success. On that note, I have received a graduation invitation from one of those...

  • June will be a very busy month

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 20, 2010

MIXED BAG--Last weekend was nice and even as the work week begins, the sun is shining after some night time showers. However, it's pretty wet out there this Tuesday morning, and it looks like rain is going to fall most of the week. I guess we'll have to be busy as beavers while the sun is shining and hope the following weekend is nice, but it only looks like Sunday will be. Temperatures are supposed to drop mid-week and the snow levels are dropping to 3,000 feet so I guess we can't put away those warm jackets just yet. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...

  • Sheriff's Report - May 20, 2010

  • Martha Circle Tea made for lovely time

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 20, 2010

I’m sure everyone is aware that the iconic Rosburg Store is closed as of Monday, the 17th. The only information I have is that it will be closed indefinitely. What a gorgeous weekend. Now it looks like some more unwelcome rain and stormy weather is on the agenda for the rest of the week. News from Naselle: There will be a District track meet on Thursday at Raymond. Girl’s pole vault will start at 3:30 p.m. and the other events will follow. Go Comets! Are you looking for something fun to do on a weekend or two this summer? Hosts are needed at th...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|May 13, 2010

Here we go again! Rummage sale time! This Saturday (May 15), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. New items have been donated and we are selling them at bargain prices. Come visit with your neighbors and you may get the opportunity to talk to county commissioner Blair Brady, as he usually shows up at our fund raisers that support the fair. As we prepare for our 2010 Fair a lot of time is spent making decisions by the Fair Board. I thought you might be interested to know who these people are, and what they do to...

  • Men allege meetings violations

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 13, 2010

Two men have sued the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District over alleged violations of the state's Open Public Meetings Act. The men, Steve R. Gacke and Steven Sultemeier, claim the district board of directors failed to follow the public meetings law when it held meetings in February and March. Sultemeier had been a member of the district board of directors but resigned because of his concerns the board didn't give proper notification to the public about the meetings. Listed as defendants are the school district and Hollis Fletcher, board...

  • Public meeting laws must be followed

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 13, 2010

Kudos to Steven Sultemeier and Steve Gacke for taking the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Board of Directors to task over alleged violations of the state Open Public Meetings Act. In a complaint filed May 6 in Pacific County Superior Court, the men claim the school board violated the act by holding a special meeting March 9 without posting the required 24 hours notice in advance for the public, despite Sultemeier's warning that the notice was required. The men also claim that the board's agendas for the March 9 meeting and a February 11...

  • Fashion and fun at Rosburg Hall Sunday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 13, 2010

I hope everyone enjoyed the couple of days of sunshine we had last weekend, and that all the Moms had a wonderful day on Sunday. I had a wonderful weekend with some of our family in Oregon. The weather wasn’t the greatest but the company was. The weatherman says we may have some nice days this week, so I’m hoping to get the lawn mowed before it’s tall enough to make into hay. News from Naselle: The school year is winding down for this year with a little more than a month to go. Lots of last minute activities for many of our students, espec...

  • Refuge run will be held on May 15

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 6, 2010

SPOTTY--Our sunshine has been sort of hit and miss lately, and the days that had been forecast for sunny last week, were pretty spotty. Wound up being more clouds and rain showers than sun I think. Of course, it all depended on where you were, as I heard some folks were able to mow their lawns, while others would have been needing a snorkel to manage that! It looks like we may have a few days of dry weather by the time this gets delivered, so I sure hope so as the "April Showers" are getting a little old and the hail and the pounding rains...

  • Reader clarifies school board comments

    May 6, 2010

To The Eagle: I read the Naselle school board article in The Eagle last week and noted my comments were not reported correctly, practically regarding Board Policy 1440-Minutes. I have talked to several people who attended the meeting, and they said they were not able to hear everything I said. If possible, I would appreciate a correction in your next addition to reflect what I said. Superintendent Rick Pass, without board action or approval, unilaterally stopped taping the meetings at the March 16 meeting and that is supported by my verbatim co...

  • Earth Day brings community together

    May 5, 2010

It’s hard to decide if you need shorts and sunscreen or your heavy coat and raingear with this unpredictable weather. We actually had snowflakes this morning. I’m sure the gardener’s are scratching their heads and wondering when to plant. News from Naselle: This year Naselle Elementary School celebrated Earth Day on April 22. Grades K-5 students were engaged in several activities, which focused on protecting our earth throughout the day. The key objectives taught were reuse, recycle and reduc...
