  • March has many events scheduled

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 25, 2010

GORGEOUS--We might be back to some rain now but wasn't last week gorgeous? West Valley saw freezing temps several nights in a row, but those sunny days sure made up for the cold! The only down side to the wonderful weather was my back and knees and everything else, were aching in rebellion against the yard work I was trying to get done! Whew! Always quite a job but I'm glad to get ahead of some of the weeds for a change. I hope you've been able to enjoy some of this sunshine prior to the rains coming back, as it's really a "pick-me-upper."...

  • Naselle board considers summit

    Cody Cooley|Feb 25, 2010

Naselle school board members were honored for their service to district students at their meeting on February 16. Elementary aged students made thank you cards and paper flower bouquets, while middle school students created thank you posters that were presented to the board at the meeting. High School Treasurer Alan Erickson reported that the school would hold daily pep assemblies this past week to mark the kickoff of district basketball playoffs. Board chair Hollis Fletcher brought up his idea of having a summit meeting between school board me...

  • Garage sale and bake sale this weekend

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 25, 2010

Can you believe the past couple of weeks and the magnificent weather we have had? Looks like that is about to come to an end this week as they are calling for rain once again. I guess we should be grateful for the mild weather we have had this winter, though. We have had the opportunity to see some interesting wildlife antics here on our property. Just the other day, I watched a heron try to land in our birch tree on a branch about 40 feet up. He made a big circle and attempted to land, only to fall all the way to the ground. He wasn’t hurt, b...

  • Voters thanked for school levy support

    Feb 18, 2010

To The Eagle: On behalf of all the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District students and staff, I express our appreciation for your support in the Maintenance & Operation Levy. These are challenging times we live in. It is refreshing to see a community support the education of the young people with an excellent voter turnout and an overwhelming “yes” vote. Daily I witness parent and community volunteers come into our schools to work with students one-on-one and in small groups. With this kind of support, it is easy to see why Naselle Sch...

  • Well wishes go out to injured trooper

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 18, 2010

I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day weekend, as did my husband and I. We enjoyed a couple of days with our kids, grandkids and little Ezekiel, our great grandson. He has really grown into quite the little personality in his eight months. Wow, time sure goes fast when you don’t see the little ones very often. News from Naselle: Our thoughts and prayers are with State Trooper Scott Johnson of Naselle after being shot this past weekend. I hear he will make a full recovery and the aut...

  • Lots of events on Valentine weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

NOT TOO BAD--Monday wasn't too bad; some fog in the morning and lots of sunshine, which was nice after several days of partially wet and cold. Looks like the dry streak won't last long as by the time you read this, we'll be ready for more raindrops and maybe even some wind. At least we aren't "shoveling" our weather, as those folks back East got hammered with a couple of feet of snow, so we're looking good. The only down side is that we might be singing the blues when our lack of snow pack brings us a drought this summer. Let's hope that...

  • Appeals court reverses Johnson Park ruling

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

The Washington State Court of Appeals, Division II, in late January overturned a Wahkiakum County Superior Court decision giving control of the old Rosburg School, known now as Johnson Park, to Johnson Family heirs. The plaintiffs, Joy Johnson, Earl Johnson and Peder Johnson, have until February 25 to file a notice of appeal to the state supreme court. If the supreme court doesn't accept the decision, the case will return to Wahkiakum Superior Court where a new ruling will be entered. In 1936, John and Helen Johnson conveyed property at...

  • Seagulls and eagles come to Grays River

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 11, 2010

It certainly looks like spring is on its way. Trees are budding out, the daffodils are already blooming in my yard, the frogs are singing, and I have even seen a hummingbird this morning, in this gorgeous sunshine. Even though there was a light coat of frost on the ground earlier, it has warmed up to the point we have doors and windows open. It’s wonderful. News from Naselle: Two teams from Naselle-Grays River Valley high school competed in an ESD 113 regional knowledge bowl meet in Olympia on February 5. In all, 16 teams from 11 different 1B a...

  • Comets take lead

    Poul Toftemark|Feb 4, 2010

On Tuesday, the battle for first place in the Pacific League boys basketball standings took place in a crowded gym in Naselle, with the Comets beating South Bend 69-55. The Comets spurted out with a quick basket and never looked back. After the first quarter, the Comets led 19-8. South Bend closed the gap to two points, Naselle 27, South Bend 25 at the half. The Comets made a great run in the third, up 16 at one point and ending the quarter leading 47-37. The fourth was a real battle, heavy with South Bend defense. Some very clutch free throws...

  • Future of Johnson Park a little clearer

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 4, 2010

This sure has been an odd winter so far. Definitely nicer than the past few years. My daffodils are already coming up and showing buds. The frogs are in full chorus every night and it seems earlier this year. News from Naselle: Sports for the rest of this week at Naselle-Grays River Valley High School: Congratulations on some fantastic basketball. By the time we go to press we will know who is the number one team in our league--Naselle or South Bend--as the tiebreaker will have been played on Tuesday. Thursday (today): high school girl’s basket...

  • Valentine Diamond Dinner February 13

    Jan 28, 2010

NASTY BEGINNING--The rain and winds were obvious at the beginning of this week, with Sunday being a pretty miserable day, but football fans thought it was just right for staying in and watching playoff games! It looks like the New Orleans Saints will be heading to the Super Bowl for the first time on February 7 against the “come from behind kids,” the Indianapolis Colts, so this should be a really great game. As this week progresses, we are supposed to have a few drier days, but it’s not going to last too long, as by Friday, I hear we are b...

On February 13 at Rosburg Hall, local sponsors are offering a free workshop to share new and not-so-new tools for rural life in the area. “This workshop is designed to give novices the basics, and old-timers a few new gems of wisdom,” explained WSU Extension Specialist, Carrie Kennedy, one of the workshop sponsors. “There should be something for everyone.” Speakers representing, local, state, and federal organizations will provide workshop attendees a full range of options to make rural living in Wahkiakum County and Naselle more amenable. • Naselle board discusses issues

Cody Cooley and Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 28, 2010

Naselle school board members discussed the coming school levy vote, current scenarios about the future of the Naselle Youth Camp, and other matters at a January 19 meeting. During the public comment session, Naselle resident Steve Gacke detailed his concerns about the financial impact of the proposed school levy in a timber industry dependent community that has felt the effects of the economic downturn. Director Gilbert Haataia clarified that a clause in the levy exempts people who earn under $35,000 a year and meet other qualifications, and th...

  • Mark your ballots for upcoming levy

    Jan 28, 2010

News from Naselle: I had a note from one of the Westend folks attending the Naselle Booster Club Crab Feed last Friday evening. Poul Toftemark said the feed was “awesome,” and all the trimmings, just wonderful. In order to work off some of the goodness, he opted to attend the basketball game afterwards. In his words he says, “The feed was followed by a fierce game with the slaphappy defense of Valley. The Naselle boys stayed the course and had the lead the whole game, thanks in part to some great 3 point shooting. Valley came close towar...

WET AGAIN--As I begin this column we are seeing raindrops and winds are headed our way, but hopefully they won’t be too bad. I hope all of you took precautions to batten down the hatches as you never know when one of those watches can turn into a full scale warning and by then, it’s too late! Looks like soggy weather every day this week but one, so keep the hip boots handy. We might need them! • Time to dance; who will take the lead?

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2010

The annual Washington Legislative Dance has begun. It has become a tradition, with the governor and political parties of the legislature dancing around issues, with someone taking the lead and the other partners following without caring if they step on someone's toes. This year, however, everyone seems to be trying to avoid taking the lead in dealing with the state's latest revenue shortfall. Cut government, cut spending, say the minority Republicans. That's fine, Governor Gregoire has said. In December, as required by state law, she presented...

  • Grange News

    Darlene Ammer|Jan 7, 2010

Grays River Grange #124 had a very busy 2009. The year began with a flood. Thankfully, the Grange survived with minimal water in the entry but the water left with a muddy mess outside in the parking areas. 2009 brought some much needed upgrades to the Grange. Work began with the bathrooms being remodeled. The ceiling tiles have also been removed revealing the original grand high ceilings. The Elochoman Grange closed its doors in January. Members from the Elochoman Grange merged with Grays River Grange. Currently, the State Grange is working...
