  • Time to dance; who will take the lead?

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 13, 2010

The annual Washington Legislative Dance has begun. It has become a tradition, with the governor and political parties of the legislature dancing around issues, with someone taking the lead and the other partners following without caring if they step on someone's toes. This year, however, everyone seems to be trying to avoid taking the lead in dealing with the state's latest revenue shortfall. Cut government, cut spending, say the minority Republicans. That's fine, Governor Gregoire has said. In December, as required by state law, she presented...

  • Grange News

    Darlene Ammer|Jan 7, 2010

Grays River Grange #124 had a very busy 2009. The year began with a flood. Thankfully, the Grange survived with minimal water in the entry but the water left with a muddy mess outside in the parking areas. 2009 brought some much needed upgrades to the Grange. Work began with the bathrooms being remodeled. The ceiling tiles have also been removed revealing the original grand high ceilings. The Elochoman Grange closed its doors in January. Members from the Elochoman Grange merged with Grays River Grange. Currently, the State Grange is working...

  • Thanks for service in thankless jobs

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jan 7, 2010

As we start the new year, I want to say thanks to recently retired elected officials. People have a tendency to look down their noses at "politicians." I hear that in some parts of the country, newly elected officials routinely fire government employees and appoint their cronies upon being elected. Connection is more important than qualification. Being from the Pacific Northwest, I haven't seen much of that. Overall, I'd say our local politicians have kept one goal in mind above all others, and that's serving the public in their jobs. Sure,...

  • No. 178-09

    Dec 31, 2009

***Advertisement*** WAHKIAKUM WEST TELEPHONE has been the local telephone company serving the Grays River and Naselle areas since approximately 1927. During the intervening years, we have worked hard to build a telephone system that would provide high quality telecommunications services to the communities we serve. We have done this notwithstanding the higher costs of serving rural areas in the State of Washington and when few, if any, other telephone companies were interested in serving our communities. We have served and intend to continue...

  • Former Naselle student returns from volunteer work

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 31, 2009

Where did 2009 go? I can€™t believe it€™s almost 2010. That means we have lived here for 10 years, and it seems like we moved in yesterday. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Our household certainly did. We even got to visit with three of our former puppies. What a trip watching five big dogs wrestle and run in the fields. They are all related, as we have the mother, father and big brother, and they all seem to remember that this is where they came from. We also got a Christmas card fro...

  • Planning commission acquires new member

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 22, 2009

I don’t know about you but I still have a few things to do before the big day on Friday, so this column will be shorter than usual. We are expecting two of our sons and their girlfriends on Tuesday afternoon, as well as their puppies. We will be celebrating our son Don’s birthday a little late (it was the 16th), with his choice of what he wants to eat, and what kind of birthday cake I fix. It never changes, since he was quite young, his dinner has been hamburger stroganoff and German chocolate cake for dessert. It’s nice to be able to cook...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

    Sarah Lawrence, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 17, 2009

We’ve seen snow, sleet, hail and a little freezing rain but I’m delighted to confirm the fair grounds are still standing. Volunteer Paul Lawrence has been busy, working hard to ensure we’re tucked up nicely for the long winter ahead. With last year’s damage behind us and funding from the county in place, 2010 is looking very positive. I must admit that I am thrilled to confirm that the new fair board president for 2010 is Becky Ledtke of Skamokawa. Becky has been an active volunteer within the community for many years, including 10 years a...

  • Weather in the news once again

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 25, 2009

Water, water everywhere. We knew it was coming; it was just a matter of when. We are now residing on our hill with lakefront property, probably for a couple more days, and we are the lucky ones. There are lots of logs and big trees with root wads floating in the Grays River and hopefully they will not be caught up on the bridges. News from Naselle: This community will say goodbye to one of the most gracious, most generous, and personable ladies to have lived her life in our community. Rose Elaine Johnson, known to most as “Rosie,” passed awa...
