    The Appelo Archive Center, operated by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation, will officially open the new C.A. and Agnes Appelo Memorial Library on February 1 with an Open House from 2-5 p.m. Located in the Appelo Plaze in Naselle at 1052 SR 4, the new library showcases the books collected by members of the Appelo family for over 60 years.     The Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball team started the 2008-09 season with three wins this past week. The Mules opened with a 65-47 win over the Comettes at Naselle on December 3. The Mules led 15-11 after one quarter, 33-22 at halftime, and 43-35 after three quarters. Shelby Deaton led the Mules with 21 points and 21 rebounds.     The Wahkiakum Mule and Naselle Comet boys cross country teams competed in the Class 1B/2B state meet last Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco.     The Wahkiakum Mules finished second and the Naselle Comets finished third in last Saturday's Class B district cross country meet at St. Martin's College, Lacey.     With the exception of their own Mule alumni, the Wahkiakum Lady Mule volleyball team fared well in competition this past week. The Lady Mules lost a marathon match 3-2 to their alumni last Thursday. After two hours of play, the match stood 2-2, and the alumni pulled out a 15-13 win in the final game. The Mules came out fired up Saturday at the Mossyrock Tournament and powered their way to claim the championship.     A Rosburg woman sustained neck injuries in a one-car traffic accident Monday morning. Gerri J. Cowell, 26, was driving eastbound on Parpala Road, Naselle, when her 2008 Ford Focus left the roadway. According to a report from the investigating Washington State Patrol, Cowell overcorrected, and the vehicle rolled, coming to rest on its top. Cowell, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained neck injuries and was airlifted to Emanuel Hospital, Portland, for treatment. She will be charged with negligent driving....

    Naselle resident Steven J. Dobbins, 46, died last Friday night as result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident near Rosburg. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, Dobbins was driving a 2007 Ford pickup southbound on the Altoona-Pillar Rock Road around 11 p.m. The vehicle left the roadway near milepost 9.7, went up an embankment and then rolled on to the passenger side.
