The cause of two unrelated and recent fires in Wahkiakum County remain undetermined. According to Austin Burkhalter, assistant chief for the Grays River Fire Department, because a fire at a home on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road on May 28 did not appear suspicious, there was no request for a fire investigator. In a story about the county commissioners meeting in last week’s paper regarding the landscaping projects that were approved by the county commission on June 6, the funding for this project is coming from the Capital Projects fund. The event, designed to support local food banks and the people who use them, is the brainchild of Jabber Shack owner, Sue Zabel. Last Thursday there was a full house in the sanctuary of the Hope Center, when 20 people turned out for the Stay Active and Independent for Life class, otherwise known as SAIL. The class is led by a retired nurse, Vicki Skeers. She joined the class not long after it was started by Sharon Shelby and eventually began leading the activity herself. Last Wednesday, volunteer firefighters responded to a second structure fire in Wahkiakum County in less than a week. The first was on May 28 on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road. The second fire, unrelated, was on Puget Island. Early Sunday morning at 2:06 a.m., the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department received a call about a structure fire, including the garage and deck, at a home in the 1300 block of Altoona/Pillar Rock Road.
