    An army of volunteers is getting ready to host 30 veterans and nine members of Gold Star families, including six kids, for this year’s Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby, scheduled for August 30 and 31.     With two commissioners attending the Wahkiakum County Port 1 meeting remotely, it was up to Port Commissioner James Sorensen, who joined the board just last month, to take the lead. Port Manager Todd Souvenir talked to the commissioners about new marina gear, which will be for sale, including hats, T-shirts, and sweatshirts with the marina logo.     The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners heard about current projects and other matters, and approved a resolution pertaining to the water rate with the Town of Cathlamet, a bit of housekeeping which is done every year.     The Cape Horn fire which began in the early morning hours of August 7 is considered to be under a status of control, according to Jeff Bortner, the Department of Natural Resources Wildland Fire District Manager for Pacific Cascade Region. The scene of the 5-10 acre fire, about five miles east of Cathlamet, will continue to be monitored for a couple weeks before its status is changed to out.     The phone calls came in quick succession to Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department early Sunday morning,. At 12:33 a.m., someone reported hearing six gun shots, possibly a rifle, west of her home at Cape Horn.     A search and rescue for two young men who went missing during a swim in the Columbia River at Skamokawa Vista Park on Saturday has now become a search and recovery. Ismael and Elmer Lopez, both of Longview, were camping with friends and families at Vista Park over the weekend.     Election officials across Washington state last week updated vote tallies from the August 2 primary election, and on Tuesday afternoon, incumbent Congresswoman Jamie Herrera Beutler conceded her race with fellow Republican Joe Kent. According to the Washington Secretary of State Tuesday afternoon report, Kent had 49,515 votes and Herrera Beutler had 48,587.
