  • Commissioners seek lower cost for moving courthouse offices

    Rick Nelson|Sep 22, 2022

Wahkiakum County courthouse department heads presented on Tuesday a plan to relocate and remodel offices, but the board of commissioners sent them back to the drawing board. The estimated price tag is $160,000, and that figure bothered commissioners. "That number is higher than I expected," said board Chair Gene Strong. "I'd like you to review it and see what you can trim. That would be my request." "Shell shock," commented Commissioner Dan Cothren. However, he added that after looking over the proposal carefully, he was satisfied with its...

  • November's election includes vote on .02% sales tax

    Karen Bertroch|Sep 22, 2022

Sometimes voters can get overwhelmed with choices on the November 8 ballot. The .02% sales tax proposal is one that some might not take time to realize its importance for all residents. The sales tax increase is county wide on goods and services, including internet sales delivered to a Wahkiakum County address. It does not apply to food or other tax-exempt items. The Wahkiakum County Emergency Radio System (WCERS) will generate funding only for upgrade, repair and maintenance of our county-wide emergency radio system. This system is a critical...

  • Commissioners, assessor agree: legislature needs to act

    Rick Nelson|Sep 15, 2022

Taxes, construction, and candidate interviews highlighted the Tuesday meeting of the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners. County Assessor Bill Coons discussed the recent revaluation notices sent to county property owners. Overall property values increased 22.3 percent, largely because of the addition of $14.6 million in new construction to the county's overall property value. While assessments are up, the increased value will cause the tax rate to drop from approximately $7 per $1,000 of assessed value to $6 per $1,000 next year. The...

    Diana Zimmerman|Sep 15, 2022

It was her love of the outdoors, which includes kayaking, hiking, and diving, that took her on a path to the art and gives her an appreciation for living in this community. Free diving and spear fishing are favorite activities, sports she picked up during her early twenties when she lived in Hawaii for a couple years, giving water guided tours on a nature preserve. The weather was good, the company was fine, and the dinner on Tuesday was rumored to be the best they'd ever had thanks to a caterer from Toledo, the Crowded Kitchen, which brought tri-tip, salmon, oysters, and salad. Of every va...

The class started up again in April after being brought to a halt two years ago with the advent of covid-19. The class, which is taught by Sharon Selby and Vicki Skeers, started in 2017. “I have quite a few folks that come,” Selby said. “It’s targeted towards people 65 and above. • Fishing was good; catch--not so much

    Diana Zimmerman|Sep 1, 2022

Fishing is good, I heard a fellow say recently. Catching? He had a very different word for that. Luckily, fishing was profitable for seven fishermen in last week's Hook the Hawg 2 fishing derby sponsored by the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Wahkiakum County Port 1. While several people caught a fish, the seven, representing the top 10 percent of the entries, took home some prize money, all of which was generated by entry fees. There were 70 adult entries and three youths participating for...
