He was born in Deep River on Sept. 4, 1922, one of twins (Mildred) born to August and Mary (Hanson) Haataja. He began working in the woods at an early age and for the better part of 20 years was a “donkey engineer.” During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre with the 11th Armored Division, taking part in the liberation of the infamous Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria.
