Lifelong Rosburg resident Norman Elmer Anderson, 98, died in Forks, Wash., Aug. 23, 2014, a mere four days short of his 99th birthday. He was born in Deep River on Sept. 4, 1922, one of twins (Mildred) born to August and Mary (Hanson) Haataja. He began working in the woods at an early age and for the better part of 20 years was a “donkey engineer.” During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre with the 11th Armored Division, taking part in the liberation of the infamous Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria. He spent his youth in the nearby town of Falls City Oregon. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on his 18th birthday, just one month after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
