The Lady Mules suffered a difficult week with three straight losses to Central League opponents. On Tuesday the Lady Mules suffered a frustrating 49-33 loss to visiting Onalaska. “Our offense just wasn’t there tonight,” said Coach Rob Garrett. “We’ve got to be able to score. Onalaska plays tough defense.” Haylee Budd scored seven points for the Mules, Sam Boyce six, Kaylee Bryant and Tori Wegdahl five apiece; Maya Stanley and Hailey Quigley tossed in four, and Baylee Olsen had two. Tori Wegdah...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey For the regular season grand finale, the Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers were poised to head to Kalama for the famous Rubber Chicken. However the weekend at Hoquiam had a negative side effect, and coming off a week of illness, the team was only able to field a partial lineup of nine wrestlers ready for battle. Of those nine, five were able to earn their way onto the victor's stand. This week’s lone Mule in a finals singlet was junior Jesús Crawford (132). Jesús had recently come down from 138 and was able t...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey The Grizzly Invitational tournament last Saturday proved to be a great proving ground with some of the strongest competition of the year. Running a strong 12 man bracket, and round robin brackets for the lady wrestlers, there were no easy weight classes in Hoquiam. With no give away weight classes, each and every victory was earned against great competition such as Cashmere, Mark Morris and Elma. Three Mules fought their way to the finals. Dallas Gott was the first Mule to place. Wrestling in a ladies 4-person...

Dallas Gott is the lone female wrestler at Wahkiakum High School. Her large expressive eyes, delicate features and petite frame are more reminiscent of a silent screen beauty than a high school athlete. Don’t let it fool you. They conceal the heart of a fierce competitor. Crystal Davis is a Wa-Ki-Hi grad, softball coach and wrestling volunteer. She broke ground here, wrestling under Andy Wolf and Keith Burns for the Mules in the 90’s. Davis started volunteering with the youth wrestling pro...

On Wednesday, the Lady Mules traveled to Adna to battle the Pirates in a nail biter. “Both teams played with a lot of intensity…it was tied at half time and we came out in the third and were able to get a quick seven point lead,” said Coach Rob Garrett. "We maintained our lead for a while, but then we had a tough time getting the ball up the court and Adna was able to take a lead.” The Mules ultimately won the game 55-53. Sam Boyce led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Tori Wegda...
Wahkiakum fans were left utterly stunned this week after the Mules were upset in back-to-back home games by Winlock and Naselle, falling 54-41 to the Cardinals on Friday and 51-47 to the Comets on Monday. The losses dropped the Mules to 6-3 in league play and 9-4 overall for the season. The Mules trailed 10-8 after one quarter of play against Winlock, but fought back to take a 26-18 lead into the break. After sinking a couple baskets to extend their lead early in the third quarter, things came apart for the Mules. They were outscored by the...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey Traveling two weeks in a row to compete on the east side trains the mind in many ways. First, off it trains the wrestlers to handle the overnight road trips before the regional and state tournaments. Even more, it revealed to the Mules that they can wrestle with any competition in the state. Nine of the Mule wrestlers traveled to the Almira/Coulee City/Hartline (ACH) Banks Brawl last weekend. Five ended the night in the finals. The Mules' lightweight for the day, Luke Stacey at 126 lbs., was the first in the...
Following back-to-back losses to Morton-White Pass and Onalaska in mid-December, the Mules have won six straight games and closed out the first half of the season on a strong note. The recent surge began just before Christmas when the Mules went onto the road and handily beat a less-than-stellar South Bend team 73-24. Lars Blix and Shane Souvenir sparked the Mules offense with 19 and 18 points, respectively, with Seth Doumit and Eli McElroy each tacking on 11 points. Steven Doumit added five points, Travis Wegdahl four, Brandon Budd three and D...

The Lady Mules were ready to rumble Friday night in Cathlamet. With a solid team effort, they sent Mossyrock home with a loss in what was a very physical game. The Vikings had a slim lead at the half, but the Mules came out of the locker room at the break focused and ready to win. They outscored Mossyrock 25-14 in the final 16 minutes, ultimately winning the game 43-33. “I thought the girls did a good job,” said Coach Rob Garrett. “In the first half, Mossyrock played a better game. Our girls...
Twice a year the Mule wrestlers take on the weather and the roads to head east of the mountains and test the eastern competition. This year's first trip was to Pomeroy. The weekend started with mix and matches on Friday night verses various eastern schools. Then Saturday morning, the Pomeroy tournament started with schools from Idaho and Oregon also in attendance as well as some perennial powerhouses such as Kittitas. Saturday also offered several rematches from Friday night. Leading the team, Nate Cothren was able to rise to the top, winning a...

On December 19, the Mule girls faced an undefeated team, the Lady Loggers in Onalaska. The Mules led by two at halftime, but due to a weak third quarter, the Mules lost 45-39, despite rallying in the final eight minutes. “We dug ourselves into too big of a hole that we weren’t able to overcome,” said Coach Rob Garrett. "This group has an opportunity to be something special and they are just starting to believe that themselves. They have improved so much this year and it’s really startin...
Any hopes of a perfect season were dashed this past week after the Mules dropped a pair of league games against division foes Morton/White Pass and Onalaska. Shane Souvenir led the Mules in scoring with 12 points, followed by Eli McElroy with nine, Travis Wegdahl seven, Lars Blix six, Seth Doumit four, Gunnar Blix three, and Steven Doumit one. The Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team's week started with a four-way duel in Astoria with the host, Ilwaco and R.A. Long. The teams faced each other straight up, and forfeitures in weight classes without wrestlers hurt the Mules in proper team scoring. "Scoring the nine weight classes the Mules were able to compete at leaves a much different result," said Coach Matt Stacey. "As an example, in the nine weight classes the Mules matched up against R.A. Long's varsity, the win/loss record was 6-3, with almost all the Mules' wins by pins." The Mules...

The Mules got off to a slow start against the Trojans Tuesday night, failing to convert on numerous open looks, but still managed to take a 26-17 advantage into the break. The second half was an entirely different story. Behind the strength of a 25-5 dominating effort in the third quarter, the Mules outscored the Trojans 49-21 in the...

Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey On Saturday, the Mule Wrestlers began their season at the Mark Morris Three Rivers Classic Invite. First tournaments and first matches are destined to be filled with the jitters and are a great opportunity to establish a team's starting base line. The Three Rivers Classic proved to be a solid and challenging platform from which to start. With perennial powerhouse teams such as Castle Rock, Mark Morris, RA Long, Kalama and La Center there the Mules had a long hill to climb coming in as the only 2B school. Without...
The Wahkiakum Mules opened the 2012/13 basketball season with a narrow 63-58 victory Tuesday night over the perennial bottom-dwelling Winlock Cardinals, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to nip the home team. After leading by as many as 18 and dominating much of the first half of the game, foul trouble sent two Mule regulars to the bench and the Cardinals managed to fight back from a 30-12 deficit to within three points at the break, trailing 32-29. Wahkiakum extended their lead to five after three quarters, but not long into the final...
Visiting South Bend took an early lead and never looked back enroute to a 63-47 win over the Wahkiakum Lady Mules last Friday. The Mules outscored the visitors 11-9 in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 26-16 at halftime. They narrowed the South Bend's lead to nine in the third quarter, but South Bend went on a run and closed out the third quarter with a 46-27 lead. Sophomore Sam Boyce led the Mule scoring with 20...
