COLDER WEATHER COMING?--We've had some wind and rain but temperatures have been relatively mild for this time of year, with temps in the 50s, but the dampness and high humidity has still made me feel cold to the bone. However, forecasters are saying a huge cold front is supposed to descend upon us from the north and we could get chilly enough to see some snow. If you have travel plans over the mountains, you'll want to check out those pass conditions and keep aware of the changing weather patterns, as you don't want to be caught unprepared....

Navy Boxing Team Hawaii 1940 When I was six years old, my brother and I got a Christmas present we would never forget, two pairs of boxing gloves. These red gloves had a white face on the front with the picture of Gene Tunney on one glove and Jack Dempsey on the other. I had no idea at the time that these men were ex-boxing champions and no idea what the gloves were for. We found out real quick. My dad brought all the boys in the neighborhood to try to box each other. It sure was an odd way to...

With the help of Chuck and Cindy Cram, WAHSET coaches from Longview/Kelso, we have made improvements to our line up of events and our equipment. Kay and Patty advised me that the Silver Buckle series would have to purchase their own timing equipment for the 2020 series season. They advised that the equipment we had been using would not be available in 2020. This has worked...

  • Winter is here; are you prepared?

    Kay Chamberlain|Jan 2, 2020

ANOTHER YEAR BEGINS--Here we are saying it's a "new year" and we keep wondering where the last one went! But here we are in 2020, which means you'll probably be scribbling off 2019 from a few checks before you get used to this new date. NIPPY--As last week's Eagle came out, we were shivering a lot in West Valley, as we dipped down to 27 degrees and things were mighty icy on parts of the roadways and naturally, those shady spots with standing water, were nothing but ice. For you newer folks, watch your temperature gauges carefully, and please re...

The Ravens By JB Bouchard © The ravens are back, both of them, this time in a California canyon above a fledgling river where I’m secluded by trees, but they know I’m here, observing the litter some idiots left behind. I’ve seen these two I don’t know how many times. Like me they go almost everywhere, watching for and searching out whatever’s to be found. Sometimes it’s late summer’s peaches and plums, sometimes winter’s first snow. We’ve seen the desert purple in autumn and pastures velvet green in spring. And days like this: golden and b...

  • Students enjoy this holiday craft

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 26, 2019

Linda Wright, above left, who retired from teaching a few years ago, returns each holiday season to help fifth grade students in Lisa Frink's classroom decorate the papier mache snowmen they have spent the last week and a half crafting. When I caught up with her on Tuesday, she was working with Hank Wilson, a student from Shelley Quigley's 4th/5th grade class. According to Wright, who used to teach the whole art lesson from start to finish, students have been making papier mache snowmen for...

It is officially the day after The Holiday, you made it. Did you handle it like a North Pole Elf-Boss? Did you receive a miracle? Were you surprised by a kindness that was unexpected? Did you connect with people you love? Are you exhausted, broke and traveling home in a crowded airplane? Take a deep breath, close your eyes and become mindful of your surroundings. This season of unity and connection lays the ground for interaction and gives us an opportunity to put mindfulness in motion. Simple and repeated practice of awareness can give...

The evening began with dinner provided by the Team Board of Directors and ended with search and rescue-related presents passed out by "Santa" Billy Goldsmith, and we had plenty to celebrate in between. By far the biggest is that we had no actual emergency call-outs this year (compared to eight last year). Thanks, everyone in the public for being safe! We also had an...

  • Have a safe and Happy New Year

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 26, 2019

DROUGHT OVER?--Considering the monsoon weather we had at the end of last week, I'm thinking our drought situation should be about over! It not only dumped, and filled creeks and streams and fields to the brim, but it also blew pretty good, so the roadways were full of debris. Mountain ski resorts were happy though as they got lots of snow, and the only folks really unhappy about that were the ones traveling that got caught in the transition from "nothing" to "just wet" and then, "holy cow, snow!", so if they weren't prepared, they were in for a...

  • Smalley Family Legacy Part III

    Darrell Alexander|Dec 26, 2019

Smalley Family Legacy Part III Who was Frank Smalley and why was he so important to this community? The census records up to 1920 state that he was only a farmer. He was more than just a farmer. Newspaper records tell a different story. From The Daily Astorian, Nov. 15, 1907: Frank Smalley, the Frankfort logger disposed of his Young's River interests and will devote himself to the operation of his north shore properties for the future. From the Oregonian, April 5, 1919, for sale: Cafeteria with...

  • Merry Christmas to one and all

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 19, 2019

DAMP--It's not that uncommon to have some miserable weather right before the holidays, but every once in awhile, it's not nearly as bad as it could be or has been, so when dealing with some rain and foggy conditions lately, I'm just glad it's not snow or ice, so I'll count my blessings. Let's hope any moisture we get isn't too heavy as we are already pretty soggy and I've seen some mini slides and falling rocks along the roadways and we're hoping "mini" ones don't turn into "maxi" ones! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Dec. 19-25...
