  • Fall fishing sees lower coho, chinook returns

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Aug 3, 2017

Tribes, commercial gillnetters and sports anglers began fishing August 1 as the two-state Columbia River Compact met last week to set fishing times for the fall season. Some 613,840 fall chinook are forecasted to return to the Columbia River, 96 percent of 2016’s actual return of 642,400 fish and 84 percent of the 10-year average (2007 – 2016). Of those, nearly 403,600 upriver chinook will pass Bonneville Dam, a run that is typically half done by September 9. The forecast for coho salmon returning to the Columbia River is 319,300 fish, 93 per...

  • Robots milk cows

    Jul 27, 2017

Submitted by Jessica Vik and Ron Wright Photo by Jessica Vik When you think of dairy farming, you think of making hay, stinky air, milking cows, but how about robots? That's right! Gary and Susan Burk-halter installed two robotic milking machines three and a half years ago and the Wahkiakum 4-H Robotics Club went last weekend to check them out. "I've got to see it to believe it," mentor Ron Wright said. "I grew up on my grandfather's farm and I just don't believe it. Cows don't milk themselves." Grays River Holsteins was started by Gary's paren...

  • 2017 Wooden Boat show will be held August 5-6

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 27, 2017

NICE WEEKEND--Our heat wave has continued and once again we've had some pretty doggone nice weather with only a hint of dampness last Thursday morning, but by afternoon, the sun was up and shining again and it warmed right back up. The fact that we've had over 80 inches of rain this year, makes it hard to believe that our dry spell has already caused our lawns to turn brown! It has also meant a lot of fires in the Western state, with 70 percent of them being caused by man, so it's truly imperative to be careful with any fire or hot metals or...

  • Friday is last day to get animals registered for fair

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 20, 2017

BEEN WARM--By the time you read this, you may have experienced a little drizzle this morning, but forecasters weren't sure, and if it were to show up, it wouldn't be much. While some areas haven't had any sprinkles, we did manage a few last week when no one else did. Needless to say, the fire danger is high and it's important to take extra care to prevent a dangerous situation. One guy had a tail pipe come down and was dragging it along the freeway, and with sparks flying, was setting off small fires all along the freeway. Don't be that guy!...

DRY SPELL--Last Friday was the beginning of the burn ban for our area, and with all this dry weather we've been having, and blazes all over the western states, it's definitely not the time to be lighting a fire to burn any brush. As we head into another stretch of nice weather they say, here's hoping you've been paying attention and not gotten yourself a fine by burning when you shouldn't! Last Friday's cloudy morning and cooler temperatures were just right for working outside, although my back wouldn't really agree with it much, as it's...

  • Make your donations of food or cash to the pantry

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jul 13, 2017

It’s definitely summer. The hay fields are full of activity, and I am missing the rain. My house has been filled with family for nearly two months, and it looks like that will change by the time this paper is published. Back to quiet times again, and believe me, I will miss that. Please remember the West End Food Pantry when you are out doing your own grocery shopping. Pick up an extra can or two of soup, canned meats, canned fruit or veggies, add a few items to your cart to help out the pantry with "kid friendly" ready-to-eat or e...
