  • Friday is last day to get animals registered for fair

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 20, 2017

BEEN WARM--By the time you read this, you may have experienced a little drizzle this morning, but forecasters weren't sure, and if it were to show up, it wouldn't be much. While some areas haven't had any sprinkles, we did manage a few last week when no one else did. Needless to say, the fire danger is high and it's important to take extra care to prevent a dangerous situation. One guy had a tail pipe come down and was dragging it along the freeway, and with sparks flying, was setting off small fires all along the freeway. Don't be that guy!...

  • Bald Eagle Days are this weekend in Cathlamet

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 13, 2017

DRY SPELL--Last Friday was the beginning of the burn ban for our area, and with all this dry weather we've been having, and blazes all over the western states, it's definitely not the time to be lighting a fire to burn any brush. As we head into another stretch of nice weather they say, here's hoping you've been paying attention and not gotten yourself a fine by burning when you shouldn't! Last Friday's cloudy morning and cooler temperatures were just right for working outside, although my back wouldn't really agree with it much, as it's...

  • Make your donations of food or cash to the pantry

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jul 13, 2017

It’s definitely summer. The hay fields are full of activity, and I am missing the rain. My house has been filled with family for nearly two months, and it looks like that will change by the time this paper is published. Back to quiet times again, and believe me, I will miss that. Please remember the West End Food Pantry when you are out doing your own grocery shopping. Pick up an extra can or two of soup, canned meats, canned fruit or veggies, add a few items to your cart to help out the pantry with "kid friendly" ready-to-eat or e...

  • New Washington distracted driving law starts July 23

    Jul 13, 2017

Are you ready to be “hands-free” while driving in Washington? In just a few weeks, a tougher distracted driving law with increased penalties will go into effect in Washington state. As a driver, it’s important to know what the new law prohibits and what it will cost if you’re ticketed for a distracted driving violation. When Gov. Jay Inslee signed the bill enacted by the Washington Legislature during the 2017 session (SB 5289), he vetoed the section that gave drivers until 2019 to acclimate to the changes and instead declared Sunday, July 23, 2...

Throughout June, bald eagles have driven the cormorants from the island and onto bridges in the area to nest. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers observers have also seen several thousand cormorants nesting in Willapa Bay as well as up the coast in Grays Harbor. Culling of the cormorants was suspended April 27 due to “lack of colony formation on the island. Photos show d...

  • Flea Market Saturday at the fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 6, 2017

PRETTY NICE--The first weekend in July was pretty doggone nice, as we had temperatures in the 70's and a nice breeze, so that was much more to my liking than those higher temps we had a short while ago. It was also looking dry for the big 4th of July celebrations that were going on, so that's always nice, as last year we were a little wet out here in West Valley. Here's hoping we keep that good weather for all our upcoming festivities around our area! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 6-12 are Irene Martin, Jaiden Mahitka, Pat...

  • Group planning to continue senior lunch

    Trudy Fredrickson|Jul 6, 2017

I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful 4th of July. Speaking for myself the whole weekend was incredible, filled with family laughs, love and fun. These times are so precious and even though the whole family wasn’t present, it was so special with those who were able to make it. As an added bonus, my nephew and niece will be here for another week before returning to the desert heat of southern California. News from Naselle: Summer is finally here, so there aren’t many school events to write about. If you or your group has an event coming up...
