Our trip to California was wonderful, lots of visiting with old friends, a soccer tournament for our grandson (the team took 3rd place), and lots of hugs and fun time with family. The weather wasn’t too bad, only in the high 80s and low 90s. You can have the noise of the city though and the awful traffic, it was good to come home. News from Naselle: Well, it’s that time again, the last big weekend before the new school year begins on Tuesday, the 3rd at 8:15 a.m. for students of the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District. Let’s go Comet...

GOOD AND BAD--There is an old saying around here, that if you want to plan something outdoors, don't do it at fair time, as the odds are, it will rain! Sure enough, after about a month of dry weather, it rained pretty good last Thursday on the opening day of the fair, which was really too bad. While we needed the rain, the timing couldn't have been worse, but thankfully, the hearty still came to check out the fair and we certainly thank all those who did. As this week begins, we are sunny but extemely muggy. I'm sure those camping or traveling...
The American Red Cross Blood Services is urging blood donors to donate blood or platelets to strengthen blood inventories in order to be prepared to meet any additional blood needs over the final holiday weekend of the summer. All eligible donors are asked to schedule an appointment to donate blood for the drive being held at the Hotel Cathlamet on Monday, August 26 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. According to Patti Phillips, American Red Cross coordinator, they had a very successful drive in June. The local unit exceeded their goal of 27 units of...
As you read this column, my husband and I should be sitting in the heat of central California, on a week long visit with three of our kids and seven of our grandkids. Though I’m not looking forward to California, I am excited to see our family and probably a few friends as well. News from Naselle: Time once again to register for the new school year at Naselle-Grays River Valley High School. The schedule for students is: Friday, the 23rd and Monday, the 26th for new students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Monday, the 26th at 6 p.m. for 12th grade studen...

Wow, Fair is here. I hope everyone will come out and see all the changes we’ve made at the fairgrounds. The cow barn has been painted inside thanks to Kelly. All the tables and benches have been painted by Janelle. That was a lot of painting, and it looks great. Thank you to both of you. The Fair Foundation painted the youth building floor. Both ticket booths have been re-done and look awesome. Next year the T-Building and stage will have had a face lift that is needed. I will be asking the community members for feed back on the fair. We will b...
News from Naselle: Little 4-year-old Jessi Harman survived a near death accident on Mother’s Day. While her mother was in the barn having the family horse shod, Jessi became entangled in some horse gear and was left lifeless. Due to quick mouth to mouth resuscitation, they were able to get a heartbeat and she was transported via Life Flight to Portland. There is good hope that with therapy Jessi will be able to run, play and return to her old spirited self again. This will require months of therapy which is not covered by insurance. There will...
BIT OF A CHANGE-- We started this month on a bit cooler note and even had some sprinkles a couple of mornings, so if you were one of those people who still had hay down, I'm sure you were not happy to wake up to a couple of wet mornings. My lawn liked it, though. Last weekend saw the sun come back and it got downright warm, which made for a good time for all the events going on in our area. They included Skamokawa Fair Princess Aaliyah Montgomery's all-day fundraiser at the fairgrounds, along with the 4-H horse camp that was going on there...
I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed the little bit of rain we got last week. Our nephew from California thought it was great, as they don’t see much down in the desert. He actually turned on the windshield wipers of his new jeep for the first time since he bought it. News from Naselle: Only another month until the kids are back in school for the new year, but there are activities beginning to take place in preparation for getting back in the groove. There will be a special Naselle-Grays River Valley School board meeting on Tue...

If you haven’t bought your fair passes the Fair Royalty will only be selling them until Sunday. After that the Fair office will have them for sale. Don’t forget to get your Raffle tickets from the Fair Royalty as well, they wil...
COOLED OFF--As this week began, we woke up to wet pavement on Sunday morning- a big change from just clouds, sun and wind. I'm sure my lawn enjoyed the little drink. Water systems are taking a hit as people use a lot more water this time of year, but the sources are down to a trickle for some of us rural folks on springs and wells. As we head into a brand new month, don’t forget to conserve water, as many places are facing shortages. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthday this week are Sheran Parker, Jae Stewart, Nance Collupy, John L. M...

WOW! Only two weeks until Fair. Where has the time gone? We still need a couple of Superintendents for the T-Building. We also need gate workers. If you have a few hours and would like to volunteer please call the office, 795-3480. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out Saturday to help with the clean up day. Also thank-you to Deb and Shawn and their 4-H club for their work time today. This year the fair is having a karaoke contest Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Watch the paper for more details. Also the fair schedule and all entertainment will...
Here it is, August already. Where has this year gone? It seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to get done, but I guess time flies when you’re having fun, right? I can say that when I see progress being made on the home front. It looks like we may see a sprinkle of two later this week. I’m looking forward to it. News from Naselle: Kindergarten screening will take place for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School on August 15. The Play and Learn Group meets at the Valley Bible Church each Thursday morni...

NICENESS CONTINUES--While we had some cloudy mornings and the tiniest bit of moisture a couple of times, it has not amounted to much and the sun always seems to show up in the afternoon. Last weekend had perfect weather for the Bald Eagle Day festivities as the cloud cover kept the crowd, the parade folks and all the animals at a bearable temperature, and only after the parade was over, did the sun come out to start warming things up. Everyone I talked to thought the parade was terrific and enjoyed some of the new entries, as well as those...
Submitted by Fair Manager Patty Dursteler We will be having another clean up day this Saturday, July 27. We will be doing some painting and odd jobs that need to be done. Don’t forget to buy your fair passes and raffle tickets from your fair royalty. Thanks goes to Natalia Barton for putting the float together for the girls. This week Fair Royalty Events: Che...
It’s still summer, and most folks can’t believe it. This is the longest dry spell that I can remember since we came here 13 years ago. I hear some farmers may even get a third cutting of hay on some of their fields. Does anyone else enjoy the sounds and smells of this country life, with the scent of warm cut grass and the machinery working late into the evenings? It sure beats the sounds of traffic and the smells of city life. News from Naselle: If anyone has a child that they would like to enroll in the Naselle ECEAP program, please con...
STILL NICE--Summer weather is still here and so all those hay makers in our area have had plenty of time to get their hay in, which isn't always the case. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to get all that work done, as so often we're getting chased by the rain, and it's a great feeling to have it finished up under sunny conditions. Forecasters are saying we'll have a great weekend as well. FRIDAY NIGHT--If you want to start the weekend out right, head to the Duck Inn July 19 to enjoy live classic rock beginning at 8 p.m. It's going to...
GOOD FOURTH--The Fourth of July weekend was a long one this year, as many folks took off Friday as well as Thursday and with the weekend attached to that, it was four days of good weather and good fun. By the look of Skamokawa Vista Park, there were a whole lot of people enjoying our little gem along the Columbia. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this week are Justin Perkins, Jalynn Rainey, Megan Miller, Samantha McClain, Marietta Montgomery, Sharrell Mooers, Jerry Ledtke, Randi Curtis, Denise Parker, Sunny Manary, Janelle Seaberg,...
