  • Rosburg School celebration a success

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 25, 2013

It’s still summer, and most folks can’t believe it. This is the longest dry spell that I can remember since we came here 13 years ago. I hear some farmers may even get a third cutting of hay on some of their fields. Does anyone else enjoy the sounds and smells of this country life, with the scent of warm cut grass and the machinery working late into the evenings? It sure beats the sounds of traffic and the smells of city life. News from Naselle: If anyone has a child that they would like to enroll in the Naselle ECEAP program, please con...

  • Picnic potluck this weekend at Rosburg School

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 18, 2013

Most of us could really get used to this beautiful weather, but I for one, miss the rain. I’m sure the farmers making hay don’t though. A few clouds seem to be rolling in this Tuesday morning, but the weather says it will stay dry and muggy. News from Naselle: There will be a special budget hearing held by the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board on Tuesday, July 23 at 5:30 p.m. The community is invited to attend. I had a note from Becky Erickson, who has been teaching preschool at the Naselle ECEAP Preschool now for five years and she is...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Patty Dursteler|Jul 18, 2013

Wow what a great turn out for the clean up day at the fairgrounds. I had around 35 volunteers and four fair board members. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their time. Without volunteers our fair would not be successful. So once again thank you very much. We will be having another clean up day soon. Watch the column for the date or if you would like to swing by call the office and schedule a time. (360-795-3480). The fair board has three young ladies running for Fair Royalty: Cheyenne Barton from Puget Island, Mya Kirzy...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Patty Dursteler|Jul 11, 2013

Wow! Only six more weeks until fair. The Fair Book will be coming out soon, so get all your exhibits ready to enter in the fair. We still need a few superintendents in the following areas: Beef, Dairy, Adult Baking, Adult Floral, Adult Gardening, and Adult Arts & Crafts. If you would like to volunteer for one of these positions please call the office. Mark your calendars for Saturday and bring yourself to the fairgrounds for a clean up day. Several projects will be going on that day. Keep watching for Fair Royalty events that will be...

  • Picnic and school celebration approaching

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 11, 2013

I hope everyone’s Fourth of July was as wonderful as ours was. We had about 36 people here (even though we were missing half of our kids and grandkids this year) and 13 dogs, and would you believe it, no dog fights. The little ones fell asleep early so the fireworks were postponed until Saturday night, which was just as well as I had to rescue my daughter and son-in-law after they suffered a breakdown in Ridgefield. We didn’t get back until about 10 p.m. that night. There was lots of food (which I didn’t have to prepare), a little rally racin...

  • Writer urges care in the summer heat

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 4, 2013

ROUGH WEEK--As you may have noticed, I didn't have a column in last week’s paper. I was feeling lousy, and finally gave in and went to the doctor, who thought a trip to the ER right away would be a good idea. I had thought it was a stomach bug or something, so I was certainly not prepared to go to the hospital. If I'd known, I'd have had the house clean, my column written and all that good stuff done! But as luck would have it, I didn't have time to do anything at all and just wound up going in and having a very irritated gall bladder taken out...

  • Rosburg Store now offers pizza and fresh bread

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 4, 2013

I just visited with Bob and Bev Paul at the Rosburg Store and they asked me to let everyone know how much their experience at the Grays River Café has meant to them. They said that the past 10 years here has been the best, they have made so many dear friends, enjoyed the ups and downs of our area (flooding, etc.), and the willingness of everyone to help out when it was needed and appreciate the opportunity they have had to be here in our beautiful, loving community. The people here are very special to them, and they wanted to say a big t...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Patty Dursteler|Jul 4, 2013

Happy 4th of July from the fair. The Fairboard is still looking for fair royalty. The program has changed back to its old way of the Queen/King being chosen on the amount of money they earn. So if you are looking for a way to earn some extra cash this summer give me a call at the office. We need participants from the Cathlamet, Puget Island and Westend areas. I would like to get this program going as soon as possible. We will be having a clean up day on July 13 at the fairgrounds starting at 10 a.m. Kim Nettles will have a group cleaning the...

  • Fourth of July holiday brings family and fun

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 27, 2013

We have had an almost wonderful visit with our nephew and niece from Yucca Valley, California this past week. I say “almost” because our well decided to give us some problems. Fortunately, my nephew Mark is a plumber, so hopefully we will have no more issues when he returns home at the end of the week. Actually, by giving him a hand, I have learned a few things as well. “Storytime” at the Grays River Valley Library will continue on June 28 at 10 a.m. for your tots. Age appropriate stories will be read with your child. I’m told we will have...

  • What's Happening At the Fair?

    Patty Dursteler Fair Manager|Jun 27, 2013

I want to extend a huge thank-you to Jean Beerbower, Lore Twiet and Courtney Zurick for running the Book/Garage Sale this past weekend. The leftover sale items will be donated to the Mule Wrestling team for their sale this weekend. The Fair Board is still looking for young ladies and gentlemen to run for Fair Royalty. The program has changed format. The winner will now be chosen on the amount of money they earn. The contestants will earn 20 percent commission on all profits they earn. So if you want to earn a little spare cash this summer and...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Patty Dursteler Fair Manager|Jun 20, 2013

Greetings from the Fair. Wow, where is time going? It’s already the middle of June. This year the Fair Board is looking for young ladies/gentlemen to run for the title of Wahkiakum County Fair Royalty. Anyone wanting more information should call the fair office. The fair book is a little behind this year. It’s a work in progress; we hope to have it out soon. We are still looking for a few superintendents. Please call the office to see which ones, if you would like to volunteer your time. If you were a superintendent last year and I hav...

  • Animals welcome Sunday at Grays River UMC

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 20, 2013

There was lots of lawn mowing and haymaking during that dry spell and with the recent rain soak I’m sure the grass will be growing twice as fast so we can do it all over again. Many in our community took the opportunity to stop in and visit with Bob and Bev Paul during the last few days that the Grays River Café was open, and to wish them well in their new ventures. They have served our community well (literally) with the delicious food that was prepared and served at our local café, and they will be missed. You always felt l...

  • Busy weekend ahead in the area

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 13, 2013

GREAT WEATHER--I know everybody was madly working in their gardens and flower beds over the weekend as we knew that the wonderful, sunny days we were enjoying wouldn't last forever. Sure enough, by the time I sent this column off Tuesday morning, it was back to the usual- dreary, wet and rainy. Hopefully the showers won't stick around too long and we'll be back in BBQ mode very soon. SAD TIMES--While the weather was great and the days seemed perfect over the weekend, there were some members of our community who suffered tragic losses in their...

  • Writer recounts elk adventure

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 13, 2013

It looks like we will get a few raindrops in the next couple of days, but it certainly has been nice weather for the past week. After breaking a belt on my lawnmower a couple of weeks ago, and only completing half of the yard at that time, it looked like I would need to bring in the hay equipment to cut the rest of it. Finally the new belt arrived (I bought an extra to have on hand) and thanks to neighbor, Dirk Heitsch it was replaced in a matter of minutes. Several hours later, I had a mowed yard again and a cold brew to celebrate. Now if the...

  • Busy times ahead in Skamokawa

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 6, 2013

HERE WE GO-- Where has the time gone? June means the end of school which includes a new batch of high school graduates accompanied by teary-eyed parents who can hardly believe their babies are now heading off to find their place in this world. This month also means that summer is here, so it'll be time to plan vacations, enjoy the picnics, family reunions and all the events that we like to do during these months. PERFECT CAR SHOW WEATHER--I also have to mention how happy I was about Saturday’s weather, as it was an absolutely perfect day for th...

  • Naselle schools set graduation programs

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jun 6, 2013

It is looking a lot more like summer, with the warmer days and more sunshine. I see more lawns being mowed and many farmers cutting the hay fields. Dirk Heitsch has brought his herd of cows back to our pasture and it is a joy to watch the babies romp and play in the tall grass. Dirk spoils “his girls” every day when he comes by. Each one needs to have some individual attention from him and they follow him around like puppy dogs. Maybe that’s why his beef tastes so good. News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle-Grays River Valley Class...

  • Car show Saturday at fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 30, 2013

NOT SO GREAT-- As I sit here on this Memorial Day, the rain is coming down in buckets and the wind is blowing and well, it's just not nice. A good deal of this Memorial Day weekend wasn't so great. It certainly wasn't the sunny, warm days that I’d hoped for with folks lying on the beach in the sun. Instead, folks had to keep the sweatshirts on and the boots and umbrellas handy. Hopefully you were in a drier spot than I was! SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Christeena Lindsey, Justin Rainey, Tim Rushing, Gary E...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 30, 2013

News from Naselle: The final few days of school are here for the Class of 2013 at Naselle-Grays River Valley High School, and a whole new chapter of life is about to open for each of them. By coming this far they should know that nothing can stop them now from doing what they really want to do with the rest of their lives. This class has worked hard for the rewards that lie ahead, and I want to wish them the best. This Sunday at 5:30 p.m. the class of 2013 will participate in Baccalaureate held in the Naselle Commons. Graduation ceremonies for...

  • Memorial Day weekend ahead

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 23, 2013

SO – SO--I enjoyed a gorgeous Monday with lots of sunshine and blue skies. However, as the day ended, it began to pour. As I write this on Tuesday morning, it looks pretty gloomy out there and forecasters are saying there will be a mix of gray and showers this week. If you have big plans for the Memorial Day weekend, you might want to consider bringing an umbrella with you. Considering what Oklahoma and other states in the Midwest are going through with massive tornadoes ripping through the countryside, I count my blessings that we are...
