SO-SO--The big Memorial weekend has come to an end and while it wasn't a total bust for weather, it could have been better. While some were enjoying sunshine on Saturday, most of us here in Skamokawa were stuck in sea fog and windy conditions, which meant it was a bit nippy, especially for those on the beach. On Sunday things were a little warmer but still mostly cloudy, while Monday morning saw us with wet roads at first, but then it dried out enough to mow the lawn. Last week we had an unusual day with quite a bit of thunder, and it really...

Attention all horse riders that use the fairgrounds arena: The arena will be closed to all riders from May 28 to June 3. We will be cleaning the arena building area as we prepare it for the Dollars for Scholars Event. Sorry for the inconvenience. We planned a one day used book & rummage sale last weekend but ended up with a three day sale! Lots of campers were staying at Vista Park and people were traveling on the highway pretty steady all three days. We found volunteers to help with the sales who also enjoyed a chance to visit with the many ne...
Is anyone else being swarmed with hummingbirds? I have never seen so many at the same time. My feeders have to be refilled daily and sometimes there are two birds eating at the same time on each of the little flowers for a total of six birds on each feeder. They are amazing little creatures. My cats are just about crazy looking at them through the window, especially when a bird will hover on the other side of the glass where the cat’s staring. News from Naselle: Less than two weeks left in the 2012 school year, with several important events com...
BIG CHANGE--Just as we were getting used to those sunny, dry days, the rains came back and have really put a damper on all those outdoor projects. By the time we get back to the dry weather, the flower beds will need weeding again. On the bright side, if you had an aching back from all that yard work, the rain gave you a break and saved you from having to water all those plants and bushes you just planted! Don't forget to check out Skamokawa Gardens Nursery on Steamboat Slough Road for all your new plants! ALMOST HERE--We hope the weather...
Rain, rain, rain is back again with a vengeance. Just as we get used to the sun and dry weather, we are brought back to reality. The plain facts of living in this beautiful part of the northwest. At least it isn’t cold and the gardens that have been planted will benefit. News from Naselle: The Naselle Comet track team will head to Cheny to compete in the state track meet on May 25 and 26. Good luck team! In honor of Memorial Day the students from the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will have May 28 off. Classes will resume on May 2...
The Fairground's west side of the arena new drainage system has experienced the first big downpour of rain since we installed the big pipe underground. I am happy to report there is no standing water in sight! To finish the arena drainage project we still needed to do some ground leveling in the arena area. Bill Chamberlain brought his backhoe to the Vista Park sand dunes with plans to meet up with Shawn Merz who was bringing a dump truck for Bill to load with sand. They moved quite a bit of sand to the arena area. Then Ed Stevens smoothed and...
GORGEOUS--I hope all of you have been slathering on the sunscreen as we've really had a wonderful stretch of sunshine lately! Having this dry, warm weather means we often stay in the sun a little too long, so whether you are working or playing in it, I hope you're keeping safe, and taking precautions for yourself and children. Hats, umbrellas, sun screen and shade are great ways to ward off the bad part while still enjoying the wonderful sunshine and soaking up some great Vitamin D. As we all know, this wonderful weather can't last forever,...

The Fairgrounds has a new flower bed by the arena! The sun was shining and we just returned from town with a trunk full of pretty flowers when 4-H Horse Leader Tina Merz showed up at the fairgrounds. She wanted to help accomplish a project on the fairgrounds and went right to work putting together a colorful assortment of flowers, nicely arranged in the new flower bed. Thank you, Tina! For all horse riders that use the fairgrounds arena, it will be closed to all riders from May 28 to June 3. We will be cleaning the arena building area as we...
What a gorgeous week weather-wise. I’m sure we could all get used to this. Gardens are being planted, lawns mowed, and some of the farmers are even making hay. Hopefully it will continue for a few more days at least. News from Naselle: Naselle sports for this week includes Thursday- District track meet at Raymond at 4 p.m. Go Comets! Naselle Elementary has been raising money for children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by participating in a yearly Math-a-thon for about 15 years. Throughout the years, Naselle has raised a total of $22...
GORGEOUS--Well, as this week began, there was nothing but blue sky all day long with perfect temperatures for working in the yard or just sitting outside and taking it all in. So nice! Of course, if you happened to have been downwind from any big trees, you would have had the unfortunate timing of a pollen bath, as it was coming off the trees in virtual waves. Sort of neat to witness, but if you're allergy prone, it was time to run and hide in the house! Did you see the "super moon" Saturday night? I only saw it briefly as it slipped between a...
SO-SO--Last weekend promised to bring some sunshine to our area but after a brief amount on Saturday morning, the clouds took over and it was rather gloomy all day. However, it was dry, so that was something. Sunday saw some brief sun breaks but by nightfall and Monday morning, it was nothing but rain, so if things clear up by the end of the week, I'm sure everyone will be happy. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 3-9 are Rosie Hicks, Maria Snow, Connor Emlen-Petterson, Tami Bosch, Lori Parke, Stephanie Moonen, Stan Thacker,...

Our new bleachers were delivered last week to the Fairgrounds. We expected them to arrive on a flat-bed truck so we could use equipment to unload them, but they arrived in an enclosed van-trailer. That changed our unloading plans! We unloaded by hand several tons of aluminum bleacher parts. Looking at their building plans, I am reminded of an erector set that we once bought my son, only this is way bigger! Thankfully, I’ve received some offers of help to get this project built when we get some nice weather. If the sun starts shining we will be...
News from Naselle: Sports calendar for the Naselle Comets this week include today (Thursday)-high school track at Raymond at 3 p.m.; Monday-middle school track at South Bend at 3:30 p.m. Go Comets! It’s that time of year for signing up your kindergarten students. The Kindergarten Roundup will take place at Naselle on May 8 at 1 p.m. Your last chance to see the “Alice in Wonderland” production by the Naselle Drama Club is this weekend. I have heard rave revues from many of the attendees who saw it last weekend. You can enjoy one of two remaining...
The rummage and book sale held at the fairgrounds last week-end was a big success! Kathy Elliott and Maureen Zacher-Bockius set prices and visited with many people as they stopped by. Jerry Ledtke entertained us with some sweet sounding acoustic guitar music as we enjoyed the sunny day together and waited for more customers to stop in. If you didn’t stop by, try to attend the next sale, we have treasures and books for all ages. Watch this column for the next sale week-end announcement. The funds we raise at our sales go directly toward s...
MONTH'S END--This month is about to end; how is that possible? It seems it just started! I can't tell you how alarmed I am by the seemingly furious pace as to which the days are flying by. Beautiful weekend with lots of hugs from grandkids, Emmett who is now two and his baby brother, Wyatt who is four months. Thank you, Shane and Delena for the baby fix. It was wonderful. It was good to see youngest son Carl as well. Also I must apologize to Shane for saying he was only 25 years old when he was 26. Old age memory setting in, I guess. In a few more years he would have thanked me for that mistake. News from Naselle: It’s a busy week at Naselle-Grays River Valley School. The sports calendar is as follows: Thursday-home track meet a...
EVERYTHING--Last week was full of rain, hail, sleet, thunder, wind and sunshine and warmth; a typical spring mix! As long as the list doesn't include earthquakes and tsunamis, tornadoes or hurricanes, we'd better count our blessings! I received a picture of a funnel cloud near Wauna, from the wild weather we had last Thursday, but luckily it didn't build into anything serious! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 19 to 25 are Fred Bennett Jr., Mathew Miller, Marie Allen, Sunrise Fletcher, Mike Snow, Max Schmitz, Kent Martin,...

NICE WEEKEND--Easter weekend was certainly a nice one for all those traveling or enjoying the Easter egg hunts, although we did start Saturday morning in West Valley with a layer of thick, white frost and temps in the upper 20s. Thankfully, the sun was shining and it was soon much warmer and I think everyone's spirits perked right up as the day went along. I know the lawn mowers were kept busy. As this work week began, it was still warm, albeit cloudy, but while it was dry, we were scurrying around trying to get as much done outside as...

The exhibition will open with an artist's reception with Burns on April 15 from 2-5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Burns was a 50 year resident of Cathlamet before moving to Arizona on retirement. She currently resides in Longview. Her son and daughter-in-law LeRoy and Donna, grandson Les and two great-grandchildren still live in Cathlamet. Burns, who will celebrate her 96th birthday on April 27, rememb...
WET AND COLD--As the weekend ended, there was still plenty of rain falling and even some snow. A light layer of snow was visible on the hills towards East Valley. The work week began with a bit of a break and everyone was thoroughly enjoying that sunny, dry, although rather blustery Monday. However, it didn't last as Tuesday morning is nothing but raindrops. The forecasters say we'll have a few wet days and then our Easter weekend should be a nice one and temperatures could even reach the 70s. One can always hope! EASTER DOINGS--Speaking of...
