It was time to fall a few more dangerous trees in the Fairgrounds Park. Commissioner Dan Cothren is falling those old leaning trees for us. They are big and some of them are growing in groups of many trees in a small area. Not a problem for Dan, he is an experienced timber faller. The plan was to get those trees cut down and cut up into firewood before the leaves start forming on the branches. We’ve had just about everything imaginable this week, weather-wise. Lake Fred (our hayfield) is up, with ice around the edge and snow covering the rest of the field. The ducks are swimming around like it’s a normal routine for them. The smelt must be coming in to the Grays River just west of Duffy’s Tavern, as I have counted as many as 22 bald eagles in the trees overlooking the river. NOT SO SUNNY--Well, as this week begins, I think everyone was looking forward to the forecasted nice day on Sunday, which we assumed meant some sunshine, but as I begin this column, so far we have only seen cloudy weather out here in West Valley and no hint of sunshine at all. Wahkiakum PUD commissioners voted on Tuesday to add an informational line item regarding utility tax on invoices sent to Puget Island Water System ratepayers, but they held off adjusting fees to recoup the cost of a recent increase in the tax the utility pays to the town. The Cathlamet Town Council passed a resolution in December to increase their utility tax from 3 to 6 percent, and the new tax rate went into effect for the billing cycle subsequent to February 18. It was a busy week-end at the fairgrounds with lots of horses and people enjoying our big covered arena. 4-H leader Val Rowe and her 4-H Horse Club kids, plus the parents of many of the kids and a few Pacific County Fair Board members came to look over our arena. While the 4-H Club members rode their horses, the parents, board members and I talked about the costs of building an arena like ours. We shared a potluck lunch that was delicious and then the kids saddled up their horses and took turns practicing gaming patterns for a few hours. It...

News from Naselle: The winter break for students in the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will be shortened due to snow make up days. Students will attend classes on February 28 and March 1, and be out of school on March 2. Tsuga Gallery to hold open house, artist reception On February 24, 6 to 8 p.m., the Tsuga Gallery will host an open house and artists' reception. The gallery opened in late November during a total remodel of the 100-year-old building. A very delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner was the new fair board's first fund raising event and the first time many of them had ever worked together. They are a hard working group and I am so impressed with their willingness to take on any job that needs to be staffed. The dinner preparation took many hours and then five excellent waitresses worked quickly to get the food hot off the...
BEEN NICE--I think the last part of last week and the weekend were definitely mood boosters, as the sun was shining and the birds were chirping and some flowers, like my snowdrops were blooming and it was just great to see the sunshine for more than a day at a time, so it was most enjoyable for sure! We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. Wow! Twenty people filled out applications for 12 positions on the Wahkiakum County fair board! I think our county commissioners had some tough decisions to make selecting board members. The selected board members will use their skills and knowledge to help plan many new projects at the fairgrounds. I am looking forward to working with the fair board members at our fund raising events in 2012 and discussing new ideas for activities at our fairgrounds. Wahkiakum crafts on show at Redmen Hall Redmen Hall will open on February 4 with an exhibit by crafts people of Wahkiakum County. A Kaleidoscope of Wahkiakum Crafts will cover a range of crafts from fabric arts to woodcarvings, tiles, ceramics and more. The hall opens at noon and visitors will have a chance to meet the crafts people from 1 to 3 p.m. with cookies and hot cider. I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. DOMINATING WEATHER--Once again the weather has been the dominant source of conversation as the snow began to melt, the lowland areas began to flood and the wind began to howl, which meant trees were coming down, slides were happening here and there and power outages also happened.
