NO SNOW--We didn't get a white Christmas in Skamokawa last Sunday, but that was fine with me, as we just had some rain, but it meant being able to come and go and not worry about having to cancel any plans due to icy or snowy conditions. For the last three Saturdays, we've had some decent days and that meant a great turn-out for the free community dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, a fantastic family gathering at the hall the following week, and a wonderful Christmas Eve, so we were all quite thankful for that stretch of nice, dry Saturdays....
This year has been a very busy year with a long list of projects completed by a wonderful crew of volunteers and employees! I look forward to the new projects planned for completion in 2012 and wish everyone in our community a “Happy New Year!” If you would like to help plan the 2012 Fair, now is a good time to become a Fair Board member, pick up an application at the Wahkiakum County Commissioners office. You can also go online to www.co.wahkiakum.wa.us then go to the bottom of the first page and under the heading County Advisories you wil...

What a week! I hope all the readers had a wonderful Christmas. We certainly did, as well as the few days prior to the holiday. I spent last Thursday afternoon at the birthing center in Astoria, and at 7:05 p.m., we welcomed our 11th grandchild, 8 pound 8 ounce Wyatt Lee Cruz to the world. He was 22 inches long. Wyatt is the second son for Shane and Delena, and he was eagerly hugged by big brother, Emmett, about an hour after he was born. Life is certainly a miracle. We headed to Oregon on Friday for the holiday and spent most of our time eating...
BEEN DRY--While we have been cold, had some drizzle and quite a bit of fog, we haven't had the pouring rains that have plagued us in the past during the month of December and that has been great! While I was a bit concerned about freezing up, at least I haven't worried about flooding as much, so it's made the holiday season a little less stressful when you don't have to have all those concerns. As I wrap this up on this Tuesday morning, we've got some showers, but so far nothing to make me think I'm going to be cancelling Christmas Eve dinner,...

Merry Christmas to the Wahkiakum County Fair! This is what I was thinking after opening a letter from the State of Washington, Department of Agriculture. Last October I applied for a grant from the Department of Agriculture to replace two of our old wooden bleachers. The new bleachers that I asked funding for are aluminum, seat 91 people each, they have an aisle in the middle with a hand rail for easy access to the seats and are enclosed on the back and sides with a chain link guardrail. Knowing we would be facing a limited 2012 budget, I...

STILL COLD--This weekend we had a bit of rain, so we warmed up just a bit but it was still plenty cold outside in spite of the sun on Sunday afternoon. They say we're going to have some more freezing nights before we slip back into some rain, so I hope you're all driving carefully and keeping those headlights on as you travel to and from all these holiday gatherings as whether it's rainy or foggy or freezing, it's time to take extra caution with all these nasty conditions and extra traffic on the roadways. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthd...

The lights at the fairgrounds are beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the people attending were wonderful to visit with. Last weekend's Skamokawa Grange and Fire Department dinner was a sparkling success, hope you attended! Fund raising plans for 2012 are already starting to take shape. On February 11 we will serve our “Valentine Diamond Dinner” at the Skamokawa Grange Hall. We are still in the process of lining up the entertainment for this special evening. If you have attended our dinner, you know we will find some great ent...

BRR!--I am very happy that we are not flooding or buried in snow or being blown to bits by strong winds, but I have to admit, I'm having a tough time warming up after these last few days of below freezing temperatures and heavy fog, which keeps the sun hidden until mid-day. It's great to see the sun when it comes out, but it sort of fools you into thinking it's warm outside but just step out there with no jacket on and boy howdy, you'll be right back in the house grabbing a coat--brr! However, it looks like we'll be seeing it warm up a bit and...
It was a fun 4-H Jamboree Event that Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal organized last Saturday at the Wahkiakum High School. The Jamboree was attended by 4-H’ers of all ages and they made decorated cookies, delicious fudge, berry jams and created a multitude of crafts items. The kids completed all the projects by themselves with a little guidance and a tiny bit of help from the 4-H leaders and parent volunteers that attended. Even the littlest kids mashed berries, added pectin and sugar to make berry jam. These little ones worked with their p...

WET BEGINNING--As this week began, it was soggy on Sunday and made for a miserable day if you had to be outside for any reason. However, it was a perfect day for getting Christmas cards made out, as it's important to mail things early. In our area, we need more letters going out so we can keep this post office open. I hope you're getting letters written to the "powers that be" and also get your Christmas cards mailed out as the countdown is really on. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from December 1-7 are Mike Linn, Joan Mathis,...
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. We have one tractor we use throughout the winter that they would move to higher ground if flood waters started threatening to go over the dike surrounding the Fairgrounds. Why...
It didn’t look good for our trip to Oregon last week when we got up on Wednesday morning. Lake Fred (our hay field) had raised its ugly head and the driveway was flooded. Thank goodness for our van, which we ended up driving as the Volvo couldn’t make it through the water. My wonderful sister, Diane, even had to miss a day of work as she couldn’t get her car out. Now it looks like a little rain on the way and then some dry days. News from Naselle: The Naselle sports teams will be pretty busy with games in this week’s schedule: today (Thursd...

The soup supper will feature a book signing by local author John Indermark, who will be signing copies of his two latest books: The Greatest of These and Way Words. The Greatest of These explores Biblical...
NICE ENDING--As last weekend came to an end, we woke to a very frosty world with temperatures in the lower 20s--brr! In spite of the cold, it was very sunny and dry, so that part of it was good. Forecasters are saying we're in for a couple of blustery days prior to your getting this, so I hope they were wrong and we came through with nothing more than a bit of normal wind and rain. Only time will tell I guess. Sometimes these warnings come and go with little fuss or muss, while other times, we get hit full on, so it's always better to have...
NOT TOO NICE--Last weekend was definitely a cold, wet and blustery one, which brought down a lot of the leaves that had been making the hillsides so pretty. It was a complete turn around from the gorgeous day we had last Thursday. It is the middle of November already, so this windy, bone chilling, soggy nastiness should be expected as part of our normal Fall weather I guess, but it doesn't mean I have to like it! And to top it off is the snow they say may come down to the 1,000 foot level, which almost always includes us. Just as a reminder,...
MAYBE THIS WEEK?--Last week the forecasters predicted rain every day. Thankfully, they were wrong, and after a few very cold and foggy days, we actually had some sunny, decent days. This week, I've seen rain forecast for every day, or a big storm coming, but so far, it hasn't been all that bad. Of course, things change quickly around here, so w'll take the sun while we have it. With the unexpected drop in temperatures last week, a few folks found themselves unthawing pipes and pumps, which is never a good sign this early. As most of us were...
NOT BAD--As this work week started we had a mostly nice day, as only a few showers came down here and there. Better yet, by nightfall, it seemed very dry and it was a perfect night for all those trick or treaters and we trust you only got treats and no tricks on Halloween night! As the week progresses, they say we may be in for a week or more of rain every day--ugh! Even snow levels are dropping. Let's hope what we get is just light rain as I'm not ready to face any flooding situations just yet! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from No...
