The Wahkiakum County Fair is supported and maintained each year by Fair Board fund raising events, State Fair funding, the Wahkiakum County commissioners, camping fees from our park, private Fairgrounds event rentals, rummage sales, Horse Game Shows, Fair time vendor fees, raffles, gate admissions and very appreciated donations. NO SNOW--We didn't get a white Christmas in Skamokawa last Sunday, but that was fine with me, as we just had some rain, but it meant being able to come and go and not worry about having to cancel any plans due to icy or snowy conditions. For the last three Saturdays, we've had some decent days and that meant a great turn-out for the free community dinner at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, a fantastic family gathering at the hall the following week, and a wonderful Christmas Eve, so we were all quite thankful for that stretch of nice, dry Saturdays....
This year has been a very busy year with a long list of projects completed by a wonderful crew of volunteers and employees! Knappton Cove gets grant The Knappton Cove Heritage Center has recently received two grants to further the on-going progress of restoring the old hospital, otherwise known as the lazaretto or Pesthouse. The Kinsman Foundation has granted $6,000 for the installation of a heating system that is essential to maintaining the building as well as the displays in the museum which aare housed there. What a week! I hope all the readers had a wonderful Christmas. We certainly did, as well as the few days prior to the holiday. I spent last Thursday afternoon at the birthing center in Astoria, and at 7:05 p.m., we welcomed our 11th grandchild, 8 pound 8 ounce Wyatt Lee Cruz to the world. He was 22 inches long. Wyatt is the second son for Shane and Delena, and he was eagerly hugged by big brother, Emmett, about an hour after he was born. Life is certainly a miracle. BEEN DRY--While we have been cold, had some drizzle and quite a bit of fog, we haven't had the pouring rains that have plagued us in the past during the month of December and that has been great! While I was a bit concerned about freezing up, at least I haven't worried about flooding as much, so it's made the holiday season a little less stressful when you don't have to have all those concerns. Merry Christmas to the Wahkiakum County Fair! This is what I was thinking after opening a letter from the State of Washington, Department of Agriculture. Last October I applied for a grant from the Department of Agriculture to replace two of our old wooden bleachers. The new bleachers that I asked funding for are aluminum, seat 91 people each, they have an aisle in the middle with a hand rail for easy access to the seats and are enclosed on the back and sides with a chain link guardrail. Redistricting Commission to meet December 13 The Washington State Redistricting Commission will hold their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on December 13 beginning at 10:30 a.m. The commission has been meeting weekly since mid-November and has scheduled weekly special meetings for every Tuesday through the end of the year. The lights at the fairgrounds are beautiful, the free holiday dinner was delicious and the people attending were wonderful to visit with. Last weekend's Skamokawa Grange and Fire Department dinner was a sparkling success, hope you attended! Fund raising plans for 2012 are already starting to take shape. It was a fun 4-H Jamboree Event that Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal organized last Saturday at the Wahkiakum High School. The Jamboree was attended by 4-H’ers of all ages and they made decorated cookies, delicious fudge, berry jams and created a multitude of crafts items. The kids completed all the projects by themselves with a little guidance and a tiny bit of help from the 4-H leaders and parent volunteers that attended. Greg Parke to play at Pioneer Church The Pioneer Community Association will present a concert by Skamokawa musician Greg Parke on December 17. Parke uses acoustic and electric guitar to create a one man band sound, playing a wide variety of styles. WET BEGINNING--As this week began, it was soggy on Sunday and made for a miserable day if you had to be outside for any reason. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. It didn’t look good for our trip to Oregon last week when we got up on Wednesday morning. Lake Fred (our hay field) had raised its ugly head and the driveway was flooded. Thank goodness for our van, which we ended up driving as the Volvo couldn’t make it through the water. My wonderful sister, Diane, even had to miss a day of work as she couldn’t get her car out.
