News from Naselle: The winter break for students in the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will be shortened due to snow make up days. Students will attend classes on February 28 and March 1, and be out of school on March 2. Tsuga Gallery to hold open house, artist reception On February 24, 6 to 8 p.m., the Tsuga Gallery will host an open house and artists' reception. The gallery opened in late November during a total remodel of the 100-year-old building. Now work on the main gallery is complete and the open house is an opportunity to introduce the new gallery and member artists to the community. A very delightful crowd filled the Skamokawa Grange last Saturday night as the Wahkiakum County Fair Board members and volunteers served a very nice dinner to over 100 guests. The Valentine Diamond Dinner was the new fair board's first fund raising event and the first time many of them had ever worked together. They are a hard working group and I am so impressed with their willingness to take on any job that needs to be staffed. BEEN NICE--I think the last part of last week and the weekend were definitely mood boosters, as the sun was shining and the birds were chirping and some flowers, like my snowdrops were blooming and it was just great to see the sunshine for more than a day at a time, so it was most enjoyable for sure! We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. Wow! Twenty people filled out applications for 12 positions on the Wahkiakum County fair board! I think our county commissioners had some tough decisions to make selecting board members. The selected board members will use their skills and knowledge to help plan many new projects at the fairgrounds. I am looking forward to working with the fair board members at our fund raising events in 2012 and discussing new ideas for activities at our fairgrounds. Wahkiakum crafts on show at Redmen Hall Redmen Hall will open on February 4 with an exhibit by crafts people of Wahkiakum County. A Kaleidoscope of Wahkiakum Crafts will cover a range of crafts from fabric arts to woodcarvings, tiles, ceramics and more. The hall opens at noon and visitors will have a chance to meet the crafts people from 1 to 3 p.m. with cookies and hot cider. I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. DOMINATING WEATHER--Once again the weather has been the dominant source of conversation as the snow began to melt, the lowland areas began to flood and the wind began to howl, which meant trees were coming down, slides were happening here and there and power outages also happened. Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. The Washington State Department of Agriculture grant papers for our new bleachers have been signed by all the appropriate people and Mr. Chuck Beyer told me I can order the bleachers! After an email to the company representative I think I may wait a few months before I place that order. The order will take only four weeks to be completed and this time of year it is still too wet to get the area prepared where these bleachers will be set up. Once in place, they will be there permanently because they weigh a lot even though they are aluminum. My...
IT'S SNOW TIME!--The big news since Saturday night has been the snow! It began falling around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and as I begin writing this column, the snow is still coming down in West Valley. The white-out conditions on this Martin Luther King Day have made for some very pretty photos as everything is now under a nice, new blanket of white. It’s cold and snowing, yet wintertime projects at the fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our continuing projects has been to try to make all of our buildings wheelchair accessible. Last summer we built a goat, sheep and pig barn complete with animal pens, built out of the materials we had available. We built the barn on a concrete slab that was designed for a former building. The concrete slab had some dirt areas where we needed to have an aisle, these dirt areas made maneuvering through the barn difficult. T...

What a gorgeous winter wonderland to wake up to this past weekend. I’m sure not everyone thought of it that way, especially if they had to drive to work. NICE BEGINNING--As this week began, we had some heavy fog but with the sun shining all above us, we knew it was going to turn out nice, so last Sunday was just terrific. Seeing that big ole ball of sunshine was great and it felt good as I stood in front of the window and soaked in a little vitamin D. This week I will fill out the paperwork to apply for state funding for the Wahkiakum County Fair. Let’s all send positive thoughts towards Olympia as Washington State budgets are getting close to being finalized. County fair funding may or may not be included in the state budget.
